Gravity’s winning streak came to an end this weekend, courtesy of Johnny Knoxville. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa easily claimed first place in its debut with an estimated $32 million from 3,366 locations. Also in its first frame, Ridley Scott’s The Counselor was far less impressive. The Fox thriller took in just $8 million in spite of its A-list cast. Fox Searchlight had better results with 12 Years a Slave. The early Oscar contender earned a spot in the top ten on the strength of just 123 venues.

Title Weekend Total
1.  Bad Grandpa $32,000,000 $32
2.  Gravity $20,300,000 $199.8
3.  Captain Phillips $11,800,000 $70
4.  The Counselor $8,000,000 $8
5.  Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2   $6,100,000 $100.6

Friday Box Office: BAD GRANDPA Rises Above GRAVITY; THE COUNSELOR Underwhelms

by     Posted 1 year, 56 days ago

jackass-presents-bad-grandpa-sliceAfter leading the box office for three consecutive frames, Gravity will slip to second this weekend. No surprise, the movie that is taking the deep-space drama down is Bad Grandpa – the latest feature in the successful Jackass franchise. According to Paramount estimates, Bad Grandpa earned $12.6 million on Friday, including $1.4 million from Thursday night and midnight previews. That puts the R-rated release on track for about $30 million through Sunday: significantly topping the studio’s lowball $19 million projection.  Though knocked from first, Gravity remains a box office force. The global hit should take in another $20 million this weekend, putting it close to $200 million in total domestic earnings.

Ridley Scott’s The Counselor failed to make its case to audiences in spite of its A-list credentials. The Fox drama starring Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt earned an estimated $3.2 million on its first day in theatres. That means that The Counselor is unlikely to hit $10 million this weekend – the higher end of the film’s (very modest) pre-release projections.  We’ll have complete details and the top ten tomorrow.

 Title Friday Total
1.  Bad Grandpa $12,620,000 $12.6
2.  Gravity $6,160,000 $185.6
3.  Captain Phillips $3,625,000 $61.9
4.  The Counselor $3,200,000 $3.2
5.  Carrie $1,950,000 $22

THE COUNSELOR Review

In his crime thriller No Country for Old Men, author Cormac McCarthy’s prose is taut, tense, and doesn’t waste a word.  Unfortunately, his literary style doesn’t translate well to his script for The Counselor or Ridley Scott’s direction.  The film is ostensibly in the same vein as an unforgiving, ruthless crime flick where greedy people get in over their heads, innocents get caught in the crossfire, and only the most ruthless thrive.  This vibrancy fades in and out through the picture, but it’s usually overshadowed by forced, awkward monologues that cut the tension in favor indulgent pontification and dime store philosophy.

New Clip from THE COUNSELOR Starring Michael Fassbender and Natalie Dormer

20th Century Fox has released a new clip from Ridley Scott’s The Counselor.  The script by Cormac McCarthy (author of The Road and No Country for Old Men) centers on an attorney (Michael Fassbender) who teams with Reiner (Javier Bardem) to sell $20 million worth of cocaine.  In the clip, Fassbender’s character has a conversation with a sale clerk (Natalie Dormer) about purchasing women’s undergarments.  It’s an incredibly odd scene not because of the content, but because of Scott’s direction.  The tone of the scene is almost sinister, and the way it ends almost makes me think there’s an error in the player.  The dialogue keeps going but the character’s lips stop moving, so it looks like they have a telepathic bond.  It gets stranger from there.

Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The film also stars Brad Pitt, Dean Norris, Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo, and Goran VisnjicThe Counselor opens October 25th. [Update: The clip is technically "viral footage" whatever that means.]

A new clip from director Ridley Scott’s upcoming drama The Counselor has been released online.  The script by Cormac McCarthy (author of The Road and No Country for Old Men) centers on an attorney (Michael Fassbender) who teams with Reiner (Javier Bardem) to sell $20 million worth of cocaine.  In this new clip, we see Fassbender and Bardem’s characters trying to figure out a solution to a problem that the two have encountered.  The cast is certainly fantastic and a script by McCarthy bodes well, but I still really have no idea what the film is about.  Here’s hoping Scott’s finished feature delivers.

Hit the jump to watch the clip.  The film also stars Brad Pitt, Dean Norris, Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo, Natalie Dormer, and Goran Visnjic.  The Counselor opens on October 25th. [Update: We've added a collection of character posters and a second clip to the article after the jump.]

New Images and Poster for Ridley Scott’s THE COUNSELOR Featuring Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz

A new batch of images and a fresh poster for Ridley Scott’s The Counselor have landed.  While each of the images features stars Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz, and Javier Bardem in their own standalone poses, the new poster frames them altogether.  Perhaps this is intended to establish each of the characters as having strong personalities; or perhaps it’s just a good way to satisfy the actors’ egos.  Either way, Scott has a talented cast who has the benefit of Cormac McCarthy’s tense script to work from, one that centers on a lawyer (Fassbender) who gets in over his head in a drug trafficking attempt gone awry.

Also starring Dean Norris, Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo, Natalie Dormer, and Goran Visnjic,  The Counselor opens on October 25th.  Hit the jump to see the new images and poster.

The U.K. trailer has been released for Ridley Scott’s The Counselor.  The script by Cormac McCarthy (author of The Road and No Country for Old Men) centers on an attorney (Michael Fassbender) who teams with Reiner (Javier Bardem) to sell $20 million worth of cocaine.  This new trailer goes deeper into the plot, and puts an emphasis on drama and character, especially when it comes to the supporting roles played by Penelope Cruz and particularly sinister Cameron Diaz, whose character clearly enjoys playing mind games and dishing out threats.  This is the best trailer so far, and I’m eager to see what Scott has in store.

A new full-length trailer for director Ridley Scott’s upcoming drama The Counselor has been released online.  The script by Cormac McCarthy (author of The Road and No Country for Old Men) centers on an attorney (Michael Fassbender) who teams with Reiner (Javier Bardem) to sell $20 million worth of cocaine.  I had heard the script described as a film comprised of all the strange parts from No Country, and judging by this new trailer that appears to be a fairly accurate description.  There’s plenty of darkness to go around, but also a healthy amount of odd and offbeat moments that make the pic feel fresh.  Though Scott has been a bit hit-and-miss in recent years, it’s hard to imagine The Counselor being disappointing with that cast and McCarthy onboard.

Nine new images have been released for Ridley Scott’s The Counselor. The script by Cormac McCarthy (author of The Road and No Country for Old Men) centers on an attorney (Michael Fassbender) who teams with Reiner (Javier Bardem) to sell $20 million worth of cocaine. The film’s screenwriter and the excellent cast (which also includes Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Dean Norris, Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo, Natalie Dormer, and Goran Visnjic) are encouraging aspects, but Scott is the wild card, and I’ve learned to keep my expectations in check when it comes to his latest movies.

New images have been released from the upcoming awards season films The Counselor and The ButlerThe Counselor centers on an attorney (Michael Fassbender) who teams with Reiner (Javier Bardem) to sell $20 million worth of cocaine.  As for The Butler, it’s a based on the ture story of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), a butler who served at the White House from 1952 to 1986.  Judging by the trailers, one looks tense and intriguing; the other looks like it could be unintentionally hilarious.  Regardless of the advertising thus far, both movies have stacked casts.  The Counselor co-stars Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Dean Norris, Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo, Natalie Dormer, and Goran Visnjic, and The Butler has got Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, Mariah CareyJohn CusackJane FondaCuba Gooding Jr.Terrence Howard, Minka KellyLenny KravitzMelissa LeoJames MarsdenAlex PettyferVanessa Redgrave, Liev Schreiber, and Robin Williams.

New Images from Ridley Scott’s THE COUNSELOR; Read an Excerpt from Cormac McCarthy’s Tense Script

Yesterday, we saw the first trailer for Ridley Scott‘s The Counselor, and now 20th Century Fox has released new images from the film.  The script by Cormac McCarthy (author of The Road and No Country for Old Men) centers on an attorney (Michael Fassbender) who teams with Reiner (Javier Bardem) to sell $20 million worth of cocaine.  I’ve learned to become a little wary of Scott’s films but he keeps luring me back with top-tier talent and intriguing premises.  In addition to its amazing cast, which also includes Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Dean Norris, Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo, Natalie Dormer, and Goran Visnjic, the film also sports the first screenplay by McCarthy.  An except has been released online and it’s a unique and intense read.  Most screenplays are sparse in scene descriptions and leave the visuals to the director.  McCarthy’s script goes down to almost every single motion the characters make.  It’s worth a read even though it arguably spoils a little bit of the movie.

Hit the jump to check out the images and the excerpt.  The Counselor opens October 25th.
