The CW announced its fall 2013-14 slate earlier today, and now the network has released trailers for its new series. Briefly:

The Originals – The highly anticipated Vampire Diaries spinoff centers on The Original Vampire family and stars Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, and Claire Holt.
Reign – This period series focuses on the younger days of Mary Stuart, who would eventually become Mary, Queen of Scots. Adelaide Kane, Toby Regbo, and Torrance Coombs star.
The Tomorrow People – The new drama series focuses on a generation of humans who are born with paranormal abilities, as the story takes place at a time when humanity is at a crossroads. Robbie Amell, Luke Mitchell, and Peyton List star, with Greg Berlanti and Julie Plec executive producing.
Star-Crossed – A midseason drama series that takes place ten years after an alien spacecraft crash-landed on Earth, where the alien species known as Atrians are interred at a heavily-guarded camp. As the title suggests, the story centers on a love affair between a human and an Atrian. Aimee Teegarden, Matt Lanter, and Grey Damon star.
The 100 – A midseason drama series that takes place nearly 100 years after Earth was decimated by Armageddon. As the new generation of survivors that have been living on a space station face overcrowding and dwindling resources, 100 juvenile prisoners are sent down to Earth to test its viability. Eliza Taylor, Paige Turco, and Thomas McDonell star.

Now that anchor series Gossip Girl and 90210 are off the schedule, the CW is reshuffling almost everything to give a push to new series (like putting Reign -- a drama about Mary, Queen of Scots as a young woman in France -- after veteran hit The Vampire Diaries). Beauty and Beast, which had occupied that coveted post-Vampire Diaries spot before, has been moved to Mondays, and will air after new episodes of Hart of Dixie. The changes also pair shows tonally, like new sci-fi series The Tormorrow People, which will premiere after the well-received Arrow (still on Wednesdays), and Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals, which will air on Tuesdays with the shifted Supernatural.

Though the CW's numbers can't compete with the Big Four, the network knows its audience well, and employs social media better than most to promote its series. Still, it could use a watershed must-see hit to really put it on firm ground. For details on the new schedule, hit the jump.

Here’s the full schedule:

Fresh off NBC’s drama renewals earlier today, the CW has announced a few pickups for its network. The CW has officially greenlit the spinoff of The Vampire Diaries, titled The Originals, to series. Last night’s episode of TVD acted as a backdoor pilot for The Originals, and the new show will premiere this fall seemingly under the tutelage of The Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec.

Additionally, the network has renewed the drama series Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast for a third and second season, respectively. While not a ratings juggernaut, the CW has carved out a niche market with its original programming geared towards a younger audience. The network has already renewed The Vampire Diaries, Arrow, and Supernatural for the fall. Read the full press release after the jump.

Here’s the press release:

With just three episodes left until the Season 1 finale of The CW drama series Arrow, things are about to get epic, and there are sure to be twists and turns and shocking reveals, as everything is coming to a head. With life-threatening decisions, extreme danger, sacrifices and huge life questions, not everyone might make it out alive.

During this recent interview to discuss what’s to come, actor Stephen Amell (who plays billionaire playboy Oliver Queen, aka Arrow) talked about the journey he’s been on this season, why Oliver and Diggle (David Ramsey) have a bit of a falling out, that the Oliver-Laurel (Katie Cassidy)-Tommy (Colin Donnell) love triangle will be coming back into play, the inevitable showdown between Oliver Queen and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), how close Thea (Willa Holland) and Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) might get to the vigilante, how big of a role The Undertaking will have, how much fun it was to do some pre-island flashbacks, the inevitability that individuals from the island will show up in the present day, the significant cliffhanger in the finale, just how much he actually knows about Season 2, and how excited he is for Comic-Con this year. Check out what he had to say, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Question: Now that you’ve finished filming Season 1, when you think back to the beginning, did you think that you’d be here, at the end of a season, with another one set to go?

Fans of The CW network have reason to celebrate. The CW announced today that they’ve given early pickups to their three most popular series: Arrow, The Vampire Diaries, and Supernatural. The comic book adaptation Arrow was a bit of a gamble this year, but it appears to have paid off as the freshman series will be returning with new episodes next fall for a second season. The smash hit The Vampire Diaries is the network’s highest rated series in the coveted 18-34 demo and will be returning next year for a fifth season, while the long-running Supernatural kicks off its ninth season (ninth!) next fall.

The latter series has enjoyed an uptick in ratings since being paired with Arrow on Wednesday nights, and it looks like the two will continue to be programming buddies next year. The CW has thus far only cancelled one new series, Emily Owens, M.D., but will be kicking off a new show called Cult on February 19th. Hit the jump for the full press release.

As part of The CW portion of the TCA Press Tour, network president Mark Pedowitz took some time to discuss current programming, upcoming series and shows in various development stages. During the interview, he talked about how The Carrie Diaries came about, what attracted the network to Cult, the genesis for the possible The Vampire Diaries spin-off about the Originals (with Joseph Morgan and Phoebe Tonkin, and set in New Orleans), that The Selection and Wonderland are still in pilot contention, how the Wonder Woman project Amazon is progressing, their interest in other DC Comics characters, that they are no longer pursuing a Battle Royale series, and how they feel about current shows Supernatural, Beauty and the Beast, Nikita and Hart of Dixie. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

How did The Carrie Diaries come about?

MARK PEDOWITZ: That was a book that was being tracked by Thom Sherman and my predecessor, Dawn Ostroff. It became available. Mike Lombardo at HBO, with Peter Roth’s help at Warner Bros., found a way to get this going. We got ahold of Candace Bushnell. Amy Harris joined us. And we thought it was a great take on what happens, as an origination story, in terms of Carrie Bradshaw, who’s just an iconic character. And having it set in the ‘80s gave it a different take on the whole thing.

With shows like Smallville, Supernatural and Arrow on your network, did Cult speak to you, along those lines?

PEDOWITZ: Well, when I walked into ...

Good news for a couple of popular series. First up, hot off the network’s biggest ratings in years, The CW has picked up the superhero adaptation Arrow for a full season. Much like Smallville, the show puts a television spin on the Green Arrow comic book character and has been met with a relatively enthusiastic audience response. The series had an impressively strong hold from its premiere numbers of 4.02 million viewers and a 1.3 rating in the coveted 18-49 demo to the second episode, so the order was a no-brainer. The CW’s pick-up is for a full 22-episode season.

Hit the jump for renewal news concerning the best show on TV, Homeland.

Additionally, Showtime has renewed the incredibly popular drama series Homeland for a third season. The series scored big with critics last year during its first season, and after earning multiple Emmy awards (including Best Drama Series, Actress, and Actor), the season two premiere was met with a whopping 1.73 million viewers. Last night’s fourth episode of the season scored a series high 1.75 million viewers, and with non-stop critical praise it made sense for Showtime to ensure that the heart attack-causing intensity of Homeland would continue through another season.

All of the show’s praise and awards are more than deserved, as stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis turn in incredible performances week after week on the CIA-centered series. Moreover, showrunners Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa provide some of the most thrilling entertainment of any medium while also giving the audience ...

Last night’s series premiere for the new superhero show Arrow was a big win for The CW, giving the network its best ratings in three years. As such, it sounds like Arrow will be sticking around for quite some time. In case you weren’t one of the 4 million people that tuned in, The CW has now posted the full pilot online. It sounds like the show was a hit with fans of the comics, and we already know that producers will be bringing in a number of familiar DC Comics characters throughout the show’s run, with Deadshot and China White already poised to appear very, very soon.

Hit the jump to check out the pilot, and be sure to check out our interviews with stars Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen) and Katie Cassidy (Laurel Lance) as well as producers Andrew Kriesberg and Marc Guggenheim. Arrow airs on Wednesday nights on The CW.

Currently no embed is available for the pilot episode, but click on the image below to watch it on The CW’s website.

The CW’s highly anticipated new drama series Arrow tells the story of billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), who has returned home to Starling City after being missing and presumed dead for five years, following a violent shipwreck. His devoted mother Moira (Susanna Thompson), much-beloved sister Thea (Willa Holland) and best friend Tommy (Colin Donnell) welcome him home, while his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), is not so happy. Now, along with reconnecting to those closest to him, Oliver has secretly created the persona of the vigilante Arrow, to right wrongs and restore the city to its former glory.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, actress Katie Cassidy talked about what she’s most excited about with the show, how she had pictured Stephen Amell as Arrow before he was cast (even though she had never seen him), her hopes that her character will take the Black Canary path, how she sees the relationship between Laurel Lance and Oliver Queen, and whether or not she thinks her character can ever forgive him. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Collider: As one of the most highly anticipated shows of the Fall TV season, what are you most excited about fans finally getting to see?

KATIE CASSIDY: I’m excited about everything! It’s fun to be a part of a show like this where anything can happen. It’s very action-packed, but yet, it’s set in a real world with real people. It’s very grounded. It’s dark and edgy. It’s cool. It ...

Though Smallville has come to an end, The CW is taking another shot at a superhero series this fall with Arrow. For those unfamiliar, the show is an adaptation of the Green Arrow comics character with Stephen Amell starring as Oliver Queen, an eccentric billionaire who was recently discovered alive on a deserted island after having been presumed dead for five years. We’ll likely see a number of familiar characters pop up in the series from time to time (China White appears in episode 2), but today we have our first look at Michael Rowe as the DC Comics assassin Deadshot.

The character has a long history in the comics, so it’ll be interesting to see how the CW puts their own spin on his story. Hit the jump to check out the images, and look for Deadshot to appear in the third episode of the season. . Arrow premieres on the CW Wednesday, October 10th at 8 ET/PT.

Though a TV iteration of Wonder Woman failed to make it to series just last year, it looks like the character might be returning to the airwaves sooner rather than later. David E. Kelley filmed a Wonder Woman pilot for NBC early last year, but the network decided to pass on the project after getting a look at the full episode. Now it appears that the character could be resurrected on a more superhero-friendly network: The CW.

A Green Arrow TV series called Arrow debuts on The CW this fall and the network was home to the Superman origin series Smallville, and now it looks like they’re eyeing a similarly origin-centered approach to the Wonder Woman character. Hit the jump for more.

Per Vulture, The CW, Warner Bros. TV, and DC Comics are developing an origin story series called Amazon. Veteran TV and comics writer Allan Heinberg (The O.C., Grey’s Anatomy, Gilmore Girls) is handling the script. In addition to his episodic television work, Heinberg wrote the Young Avengers comics for Marvel, co-wrote a 5-issue arc of JLA, and even wrote for the Wonder Woman series, so he's approaching the material from a comics-friendly standpoint.

The pilot is only in the development stage and The CW has made no firm commitments as of yet, but the plan is tackle the character in a Smallville-like fashion, centering on a young “budding superhero” rather than a fully formed character fighting crime. Warner Bros. is simultaneously developing a Justice League feature film that will include the ...

On the new drama series Beauty and the Beast, premiering on The CW on October 11th, Catherine Chandler (Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk) is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective haunted by the murder of her mother, which she witnessed as a teenager. She would have been killed as well, if a mysterious beast hadn’t been there to save her. Years later, a case leads her right to Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan) and possibly some of the answers that she has been waiting for.

While at The CW portion of the TCA Press Tour, actress Kristin Kreuk talked about the concept of everyone having a dark side, the challenges of playing a cop, getting to do fight scenes, what she loved about the original Linda Hamilton/Ron Perlman series, how she would love for Linda Hamilton to do a guest appearance on the show, working with Jay Ryan and developing their chemistry, the possibility of other love interests, what she’s currently watching on TV, and what it’s like to be a part of this generation’s Superman, with her work on Smallville. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Question: Does Catherine have her own dark side?

KRISTIN KREUK: I think the whole concept is that we all do. It’s not necessarily a dark side, but there are things about ourselves that we want to hide and that we think are bad, and sometimes they are destructive and violent. Even if it’s something where you say something to me and I get pissed, and I say ...

As part of The CW portion of the TCA Press Tour, network president Mark Pedowitz took some time to talk about their new fall (including Arrow and Beauty and the Beast) and mid-season line-ups (including The Carrie Diaries and Cult). During the interview, he spoke about what went into the decision to cancel Ringer, the possibility of The Selection still getting ordered to series, the rumors that they’re planning to do something with Battle Royale, how Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along ended up airing on the network, and what fans can expect from the upcoming seasons of Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Nikita and Hart of Dixie. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Question: What went into the decision of deciding not to go forward with Ringer?

MARK PEDOWITZ: It was a combination of the complexity of the stories and it not performing as well as we hoped, on the digital online space and social media space. That said, the fans are still writing me. They want it desperately. Sarah Michelle [Gellar] and I have had many discussions since May. She’s happily pregnant now. I’m waiting for her to give birth. The one thing the two of us did come away with is that, when she’s ready, she would love to come back, and we would love to have her at The CW, either as an actress or as a producer.

Do you regret having two shows that are so similar in tone and story, as you do with Arrow and ...

The popular internet hit Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, created by Joss Whedon in 2008, has been available online and through streaming since its inception, but to continue preaching its gospel to the masses, The CW will be broadcasting it in full October 9th starting at 9PM. The three-part musical stars Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) as the title character, Nathan Fillion (Castle) as his nemesis Captain Hammer, and Felicia Day (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as their shared love interest.

Though Whedon had hoped to shop his project around to a bigger venue at the time in order to pay the cast and crew (who worked on it for free), subsequent DVD sales have reportedly paid those bills. Still, the popularity of Dr. Horrible continues both in book form (with essays from the main actors, the shooting script, sheet music, etc) as well as in college and cult theaters, so while this broadcast may feel behind the times, it shouldn't. Dr. Horrible is certainly a classic. For details on the CW broadcast, hit the jump.

The series was possibly the only positive thing (for viewers, anyway) to come out of the 2008 Writer's Guild strike (remember that? Dark days). For those unaware of the plot:

Though The CW’s Hunger Games-esque pilot The Selection didn’t move forward this year (they put the show back into development), the network is now eyeing a different series that centers on kids murdering kids. Specifically, The CW is apparently mulling over adapting the 2000 Japanese hit Battle Royale for the small screen. When Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games book trilogy hit shelves, it drew quite a few comparisons to Battle Royale given that both properties revolve around teenagers living in an authoritarian state, fighting for survival in a government-sanctioned “murder everyone” competition.

The similarities really stop there, as The Hunger Games and Battle Royale have strikingly different tones and characters. That said, Hunger Games is—to borrow a phrase from Mugatu—“so hot right now,” so a similarly plotted television series looks pretty attractive from a financial standpoint. Hit the jump for more.

A U.S. feature film remake of Battle Royale, itself an adaptation of a Koushun Takami novel of the same name, has been stalled in development for years. Per the LA Times, The CW has been in talks with the project’s representatives about turning it into an English-language television series. No deal is in place, and according to Japanese law, Takami apparently must approve any remake of the property before it moves forward.

That said, a television iteration of the story would likely flourish on The CW. Whether you watch their programming or not, the network has done an excellent job of branding what they stand for. While they have shows that vary wildly ...

While at Comic-Con to debut their new drama series Cult, which will premiere on The CW in early 2013, creator Rockne S. O’Bannon (who previously created Farscape) and actor Matthew Davis (Alaric from The Vampire Diaries) spoke to the press about the origin of the complex and complicated mystery show. The story follows investigative journalist Jeff Sefton (Davis), whose brother mysteriously disappears after ranting that a hit TV show intends to harm him. When Jeff takes Nate’s paranoia seriously, he begins to uncover the dark underworld of the TV show Cult and its rabid fans.

During this interview, Matthew Davis and Rockne S. O’Bannon talked about how the concept of this show has been affected by the use of social media and its importance in so many people’s lives, what inspired the TV show within the show, and how quickly this show came about after the end of Davis’ time on The Vampire Diaries. Davis also said that he hopes to have some involvement in show’s website and that he’s already coming up with some ideas for it. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Rockne, how has it been to return to TV with Cult?

ROCKNE O’BANNON: It’s been quite the journey. I actually wrote this five or six years ago, originally. It was a reaction to an experience I had with Farscape, another series of mine, where I saw this phenomenon with fans rallying around the show. They would meet each other and communicate and come together via ...

TV pilots are always tricky. Even the best show can start out rough. Seinfeld took three seasons before it hit its stride. With this in mind, one has to consider not just what is shown on screen, but what also the potential of what is not. Cult, the new meta-series from Farscape mastermind Rockne S. O'Bannon, has an especially rough pilot, but it also has great potential. Hit the jump for a summary of the pilot and more info on the show.

Cult is the kind of show that is so high concept, it loops all the way back around into being convoluted. It’s a new CW series about a fictional cultish CW series that focuses on a cult that may or may not be linked to a real cult. At various times, the pilot recalls They Live, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Scream, Veronica Mars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fight Club, Alcatraz, Lost and especially The Ring.

The pilot begins with a faux-documentary about a cult leader named Billy Grimm (Robert Keppner) who looks a bit like Jim Jones and acts a bit like Charles Manson. From here, we move into a police procedural, which in turn becomes the show-within-the-show. And it pretty much goes on like that.

The premiere settles into a less frantic rhythm when The Vampire Diaries’ Matt Davis takes center stage as a formerly prestigious journalist fallen on hard times who teams up with Jessica Lucas, an intern on the fictional show Cult, to investigate the real disappearance of ...
