The New York Film Critics Circle has kicked the awards race off in earnest, and the love was spread primarily between Zero Dark Thirty and Lincoln.  The drama about the hunt for Osama bin Laden took home Best Picture, Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow, and Best Cinematographer, while Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln was awarded Best Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.  The group also had a couple of left field choices with the Best Supporting Actor award going to Matthew McConaughey for Magic Mike (alright, alright, alright) and Best Actress going to Rachel Weisz for The Deep Blue Sea.  McConaughey winning the trophy was a pleasant surprise, but Weisz’s win is a tad baffling.

The first official trailer for Terence Davies’ (The House of Mirth) romantic drama The Deep Blue Sea has gone online. Based on Terence Ratigan’s play, the film stars Rachel Weisz as a London socialite and Tom Hiddleston (Thor) as an ex-RAF pilot who are in love during the 1950s. Complicating matters is the fact that Weisz’s character is already married to a high court judge, and divorce is a four-letter word in 1950s England. The trailer plays almost like a dream (those expecting Samuel L. Jackson and sharks will be sorely disappointed), and the images are seen through a very, very soft lens. The film played last year at TIFF and early word has been strong. Weisz is nearly always great, and Hiddleston is a fantastic young talent. He’s a big part of why Thor works and his brief scenes in War Horse and Midnight in Paris were highlights of both films, so I’m excited to see him stretch his dramatic chops in a leading role.

With the fall film season now in full swing, I’m 100% ashamed to admit that I’ve yet to see two of my most anticipated fall films: Moneyball and 50/50. Now, I have every intention of ending this charade at some point this weekend but, for now, I hope you’ll give me a pass. If I’ve still yet to check them out when we meet here next week, I’ll understand if you choose to revoke my “mildly credible film blogger” credentials. In the meantime…

At this year’s Toronto Film Festival, I was able to sit down with Tom Hiddleston for an exclusive interview about writer-director Terence Davies’ The Deep Blue Sea.  Starring Rachel Weisz, Simon Russell Beale and Hilldeston, the film is set in post-war Britain and it’s about the wife of a high court judge who walks out on her marriage and moves in with a young ex-RAF pilot (Hiddleston), with whom she has fallen passionately in love.  The film is an  adaptation of Terence Rattigan’s classic play.

During my extended interview with Hiddleston (who is great in Deep Blue Sea), we talked about how he got involved in The Deep Blue Sea, what kind of preparation he does and was it more involved than his other films because it’s based on a play, does he prefer a few takes or a lot, how faithful did they have to be to the script, and filming a nude scene.  In addition, we talked about Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, Thor 2, Joss Whedon’s Avengers, karaoke, video games, and has he ever thought about wearing the Loki costume off-set.  Hit the jump to watch.

A promo trailer for Terence Davies’ The Deep Blue Sea has gone online.  The film stars Rachel Weisz as a London socialite and Tom Hiddleston (Thor) as an ex-RAF pilot who are in love during the 1950s.  Their romance is complicated by the fact that Weisz’ character is married to a high court judge (Simon Russell Beale).  I missed the film at TIFF but I heard that Weisz’ gives a strong performance.  There’s a hint of that in the promo trailer, but you’ll mostly get a sense of Florian Hoffmeister’s impressive cinematography.

In my article yesterday about the Venice Film Festival, I made some predictions on which films would make their world premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival and not Venice.  It turns out a few of my guesses were only the tip of the iceberg.  Moneyball, 50/50, and The Descendants are all going to premiere at TIFF.  But my lord, does Toronto have an incredible line-up this year.  I’m praying my application gets approved because when you hit the jump and check out this line-up, you’ll understand my agony if I’m stuck in Atlanta while these films are premiering.
