If action movies of the 80s and 90s are my religion, then The Expendables 2 just gave me my last rites.  Lionsgate is letting us premiere a new poster that features the entire kick-ass cast assembled along one of the most famous tables in artistic history.  While scholars have deciphered Da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper” for centuries, the companion image from The Expendables 2 is more my style, complete with guns, skulls and plenty of booze.

Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Scott Adkins and Yu Nan star in the sequel to Stallone’s bone-breaking 2010 original film.  Directed by Simon West, The Expendables 2 opens August 17th.  Hit the jump to see the exclusive poster.

You’ll have to wait until August 17th to see Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone together again in The Expendables 2, but this video from the set visit of The Tomb should hold you over.  Production started recently in New Orleans on the Mikael Hafstrom (1408) picture that stars Sly as Ray Breslin, the world’s foremost authority on structural security who is framed and incarcerated in a prison of his own design.  In prison, Breslin meets Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger), the leader of the prisoners who wants to get out just as badly as Breslin does.  In this video, Stallone and Schwarzenegger comment further on their characters in The Tomb, their work together on The Expendables and The Expendables 2, and the old-school machismo of action movies and their stars, which Sly calls, “male pattern badness.”  Written by Miles Chapman (Road House 2: Last Call) and Jason Keller (Machine Gun Preacher), The Tomb also stars Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Jim Caviezel, Amy Ryan, Vincent D’Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, and new addition Sam Neill.  Hit the jump to check it out along with some images from the set.

Do you love America?  Do you love guns, explosions, muscles, action, tanks, explosions, violence, fighting and explosions?  If you do, then you’re a lot like me, pal.  And we’ve got mutual friends in The Monocular Group, who have put this awesome fan trailer together for The Expendables 2.  They’re also here to remind us that long before a bunch of gussied-up prima donnas assembled to fight evil, there were men to handle our problems: big, strong men with powerful guns and boots on the ground.  In a summer dominated by superhero fare, let us not forget the men that built the foundation of the action movie.  These men include Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Terry Crews. The Expendables 2 also stars Liam Hemsworth, who has something to prove, and Scott Adkins, who should feel right at home with this crew.  The movie opens this August 17th in America, the Land of Guns and Awesome.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

TOP 5: SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS Interviews, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, The Crazy Week in Trailers, Golden Globe Nods, BRIDESMAIDS’ Awards Season Chances

Admittedly, I have fallen off of the beaten path with regards to checking out awards season contenders in the theaters this year. That said, I’m hoping to begin turning all of that around this afternoon as a matinee of director Jason Reitman’s Young Adult is currently on my Saturday itinerary. While I can’t claim to be a huge Diablo Cody fan (I tend to think her characters all sound the same…as in, exactly like Diablo Cody), I’m almost always happy with Reitman’s work. Moreover, Charlize Theron looks to be in rare comedic form (an arena she doesn’t always find herself in, but one she undoubtedly has the chops to pull off). All in all, here’s to hoping that my Young Adult screening is just the tip of my awards season iceberg. In the meantime…

…In this week’s “Top 5″ installment, you’ll find a slew of interviews for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, a number of new assets from director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, a recap of this crazy week in trailers, a rundown of the 69th Annual Golden Globes nods, and a light musing regarding Bridesmaids‘ awards season chances. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

Sly Stallone Confirms That Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris Have Joined THE EXPENDABLES 2

Earlier in the week, we learned from co-star Jason Statham that The Expendables 2 is set to begin filming in Bulgaria in a couple of weeks. At that time, he confirmed reports that both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis would take on substantial roles in the pic but stopped short of confirming other rumored names such as Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Tonight, some of those rumors can be put to rest as Sly Stallone has confirmed that both Norris and Van Damme will be in the film.

For a little more, including two other A-list names that may be joining the fun, hit the jump. The Expendables 2 is set to hit theaters on August 17th, 2012.

Lionsgate to Release THE EXPENDABLES 2 On August 17th, 2012

Almost two years to the date removed from the release of the original, Lionsgate’s sequel to The Expendables will hit theaters on August 17th, 2012. While most of the cast from 2009′s original is expected to return, we reported earlier in the month that Sly Stallone was looking for someone other than himself to helm the sequel. Although nothing has been confirmed, Stallone has tweeted on his desire to see Bruce Willis’ cameo evolve into a “super villain” turn in the sequel. Interestingly enough, the film’s August 17th date means it will be battling another action-friendly blockbuster, G.I. Joe 2, for ever-important box-office coinage. That film is currently slated for an August 10th release from Paramount.

Sylvester Stallone Will NOT Direct Sequel to THE EXPENDABLES

by     Posted: March 8th, 2011 at 5:58 pm

The Expendables movie image sllice

Fans of the 2010 ensemble action hit The Expendables will almost certainly be getting a sequel in due time (the film reigned in close to $275 million worldwide against a sub-$100 million production budget). However, it’s looking increasingly likely that star/co-writer/director Sylvester Stallone will not helm the follow-up. According to 24 Frames (who got the info from an unidentified source who has been “briefed on the project”) Stallone is not currently planning on directing the sequel. Instead, the report claims that Sly has been meeting with potential directors for the project.

The report also confirms that the sequel’s script has already been penned by the writing team of Ken Kaufman (Space Cowboys) and David Agosto (a departure from the original writing pair of Dave Callaham and Stallone). That said, there is currently no word on what type of mission will be at the core of the flick and/or what alterations the ensemble cast may undergo (although my earlier hope that The Undertaker would play a key role seems to be dwindling by the day). Given his new found free time, is there a chance we could see a bigger role for Arnold Schwarzenegger? What are your thoughts on a sequel directed by someone other than Sly? Let us know in the comments.
