Paul Giamatti The Ides of March interview slice

At this year’s Toronto Film Festival, I was able to speak with Paul Giamatti about starring in director George Clooney’s political drama The Ides of March.  Starring Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood and Jeffrey Wright, the pic takes place during the tension-filled moments leading up to an all-important Ohio presidential primary where a press secretary (Gosling) finds himself in the middle of a scandal that could upend his candidates’ (Clooney) shot at winning.  Loaded with great performances and a smart script, The Ides of March is really well done and definitely worth your time.

During the wide ranging interview, Giamatti talked about how he got involved in the project, what kind of research he did, and how the film isn’t heavy handed.  In addition, he talked about playing Tom Cruise’s manager in Rock of Ages and singing Journey, David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis (where he plays Robert Pattinson’s stalker), John Dies at the End, and reveals that he wants to do a western or a private eye movie.  Hit the jump to watch.

Craig Mazin to Write THE HANGOVER PART III

The Hangover Part II co-writer Craig Mazin has been hired to write the script for The Hangover Part III.  Warner Bros. is wasting no time in moving forward on a sequel to the box-office record-breaker and I’m honestly a little surprised that they hadn’t already started moving on a new film when the Hangover 2 was tracking through the roof.  Mazin, whose previous credits include Scary Movie 3 and 4, co-wrote The Hangover Part II with director Todd Phillips and screenwriter Scot Armstrong (Semi-Pro), although “wrote” may not be the best way to describe it.  I’m not sure if copy-pasting the script from the first film and making minor changes counts as “writing”.

When Steve spoke with Phillips during the press junket for Hangover Part II, Phillips said that Part III would be the finale to the series but would be a new template and a new idea.  Hit the jump for his full quote.  [The Tracking Board via The Wrap]

THE HANGOVER PART II Review

The original Hangover hit like a bolt from the blue.  Good R-rated comedies are few and far between (although this summer we’ll be getting a bunch of R-rated comedies, but there’s no telling how many will actually be good) and the 2009 comedy brought enough surprises into its fast-paced narrative that the concept of blending a detective story with raunchy laughs worked like a charm.  It’s ironic that The Hangover Part II bases so many of its jokes on shock value and yet clings so dearly to the exact same formula of the original, right down to the plot beats and character actions.  More of the same isn’t necessarily a bad thing and the sequel still manages to deliver laughs, but the stale stench of been-there, done-that pervades the entire film despite the vibrant background of Bangkok.

Exclusive: Zach Galifianakis Talks HANGOVER 2, BETWEEN TWO FERNS, TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE, Favorite Movies, More

by     Posted 2 years, 326 days ago

With director Todd Phillips The Hangover Part II opening this weekend, I recently got to participate in a press conference with Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Ken Jeong and Phillips in Los Angeles.  Shortly after the press conference ended, I got to speak with Galifianakis in a one on one setting.

While our conversation was only ten minutes, we talked about everything from what are his favorite movies to working with babies and smoking monkeys.   In addition, we talked about his feelings on making a sequel to the biggest R rated comedy of all time, his thoughts on doing Hangover 3, what’s up with Between Two Ferns, Bored to Death, The Muppets, Southern Rivals, and Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to our conversation.

Director Todd Phillips Talks THE HANGOVER PART 3; Says It Would be the Finale

With the success of the first Hangover movie and the tracking for The Hangover Part 2 looking like it’s going to open huge, it’s no surprise at today’s Hangover 2 press conference that the cast and filmmakers would be asked about a third movie.  While I thought director Todd Phillips would try to avoid the question and say something to deflect from the possibility, he actually revealed that he has an idea for a third movie and “it’s certainly not in the same template you’ve seen these movies.”  He went on to say “the third would very much a finale and an ending.”  More after the jump.

Warner Bros. has provided us six new TV spots for The Hangover Part II to promote the May 26 release.  This set of  TV spots feature new footage not previously seen in the trailer or prior TV spots for those who want that extra taste.  It will be difficult to recapture the lightning in a bottle that made the original so great, but everything we’ve seen so far is promisingly very funny.

Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galfianakis, Justin Bartha, and Ken Jeong reprise their roles for the comedy sequel directed by Todd Phillips.  Watch the TV spots after the break.

Warner Bros. has released a slew of images from The Hangover Part II. A few of them we’ve seen before, but a number of them are brand new. While I like the idea behind releasing a bunch of images, I hope they’re not spoiling a good deal of the film.

Hit the jump to check out the bevy of images. Directed by Todd Phillips, The Hangover Part II stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Jamie Chung, and Ken Jeong. The film hits theaters on May 26th.

4 New Television Spots for THE HANGOVER PART II

Warner Bros. has released four new television spots for The Hangover Part II. Although they don’t feature a ton of new footage from the film, it should be enough to whet the appetite of fans. Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to checking out the film in theaters, I’m just still worried by the amount of self-referential material crammed into both these spots and the trailer. Honestly, Warner Bros. could save moviegoers a ton of time if they would just use the tagline “For Fans of The Hangover.”

Hit the jump to check out each of the four spots. Directed by Todd Phillips, The Hangover Part II stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Jamie Chung, and Ken Jeong. The film hits theaters on May 26th.

Exclusive: Director Todd Phillips Talks THE HANGOVER PART II; Updates on the Test Screenings, the Music, Filming in Bangkok, and More

At CinemaCon the other week, I got to talk with director Todd Phillips twice about his upcoming sequel, The Hangover Part II.  The first time we spoke was on the red carpet before the Warner Bros. presentation.  The second was backstage after I’d seen the latest trailer.

While Phillips is sometimes a bit guarded when talking to the press, I found him to be very open about how the latest test screenings had been going, the pressure (or lack of pressure) in making a sequel to the biggest R rated comedy of all time, what it was like to film in Bangkok, why certain characters are back and why some aren’t, and what kind of music is he getting for the sequel.  Hit the jump for more.

With just weeks to go before the release of The Hangover Part II, director Todd Phillips has announced that Liam Neeson’s cameo performance as a Bangkok tattoo artist has been cut from the film.  Back in October Neeson was called in to replace Mel Gibson, whose appearance in the sequel “did not have the full support” of the Hangover cast and crew.  Details on who will replace Neeson are after the jump.

New Trailer for THE HANGOVER PART II

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for The Hangover Part II. Overall, I’m pretty happy with this new trailer. It gives a solid sense of setting, does a good job of setting up the obstacles without giving too much away, and makes use of a track from the new Kanye album (always a plus, for me). Nevertheless, I can’t help but feel as if the trailer is a little too self-referential to the original (i.e. Alan’s love of terrible toasts and penis jokes, and Stu’s fear of once again breaking his teeth). Just my opinion, though.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Directed by Todd Phillips, The Hangover Part II stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Jeffrey Tambor, Mike Tyson, Justin Bartha, and Ken Jeong.  The film opens May 26th.

Warner Bros. has sent us the teaser poster for The Hangover: Part II.  When I went to go see Sucker Punch last week, they showed the teaser trailer and the audience ate it up.  People are ready for more shenanigans and as we all know, shenanigans are made funnier by the presence of a monkey that’s dressed like a person.

Hit the jump to check out the poster.  Also in poster news, check out the promo poster for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and the teaser poster for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.  Directed by Todd Phillips,  The Hangover: Part II stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Jeffrey Tambor, Mike Tyson, Justin Bartha, and Ken Jeong.  It opens May 26th.

Jamie Chung, Jena Malone and Vanessa Hudgens Exclusive Video Interview SUCKER PUNCH

Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens Jamie Chung Interview SUCKER PUNCH slice

With director Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch opening this weekend, I got to sit down with most of the cast to talk about the film.  As the synopsis says, Sucker Punch is an “epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary.” The film stars Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm, Scott Glenn, and Oscar Isaac.

During my interview with Malone, Hudgens and Chung, we talked about how everyone bonded off set when they were filming in Vancouver, the training and lack of sweets and soda on set, deleted scenes, future projects like The Hangover 2, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Jack and Diane, and we also talked about doing karaoke (they told a great story).  Hit the jump to watch and look for a new video interview for Sucker Punch everyday this week.

Director Todd Phillips Wants Charlie Sheen to Cameo in THE HANGOVER PART II? (UPDATED)

by     Posted 3 years, 45 days ago

Sports writer Bill Simmons coined the phrase “The Tyson Zone,” the status a celebrity achieves when no anecdote is bizarre enough to shock you.  (e.g., Mike Tyson got a giant tattoo on his face? … Makes sense.)  Nobody can top Tyson in this field — this combined with his surprisingly adept comic timing made Tyson the perfect cameo for The Hangover.  Mel Gibson ranks pretty high in the Tyson Zone, and so made sense as the would be cameo in The Hangover Part II before that plan was abandoned.  It will be fun to see Liam Neeson as a tattoo artist in Thailand, but it’s suddenly a very different joke.  Neeson only plays crazy.

The Hangover Part II is done filming, but there is time between now and the May 26 release to add a cameo that revels in the Tyson Zone: namely, Charlie Sheen.  Details after the jump.

UPDATE: Steve here. After this story was posted I contacted Todd Phillips. He told me this is “100% untrue”. So anyone thinking Sheen might be in Hangover 2, let’s put this rumor to bed right now. The original story is still after the jump.
