THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE Blu-ray Review

Man, what the hell happened with this movie?  This one could’ve been a new comedy classic.  The Incredible Burt Wonderstone has a cast of capable comedic actors playing new and old school Vegas magicians, which sounds like a perfect recipe for splitting the sides of audience members wide open.  The over-the-top goofiness of stage conjurers and the laughable edginess of “street” magic are ripe for satire, but even so, Burt Wonderstone is an uneven comedy that see-saws between perfectly tolerable and hysterical.  Will Warner Bros.’ Blu-ray release win over our home video hearts?  Find out after the jump.

For a second week in a row, Oz the Great and Powerful reigned at the domestic box office. The Disney hit earned an estimated $42.2 million, down 47% off from last weekend’s debut. But the big news this week is the film that took second place. With an estimated $17.1 million from 2,507 locations, The Call wound up stealing the spotlight from the comedy debut of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

 Title  Weekend Total
1.  Oz the Great and Powerful  $42,222,000 $145
2.  The Call  $17,100,000 $17.1

Friday Box Office: OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Reigns; THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE Shamed by Surpise Strength of THE CALL

by     Posted 1 year, 31 days ago

It looks like another decent weekend at the box office, thanks to Oz the Great and Powerful. The Disney hit earned an estimated $11.4 million on its second Friday, and brought its domestic total up to an impressive $114.2 million. That Oz remained in first place was entirely expected; what was not so expected was the film that followed it. The Call, the thriller starring Halle Berry, opened with a modest weekend projection of around $10 million. Instead, the Sony/Tristar release earned an estimated $6.2 million from 2,507 locations on its first day alone – putting it on track for over $17 million and a second-place finish through Sunday. The relative success of The Call drew attention to the relative failure of Friday’s higher-profile debut: The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. From 3,160 locations, the Steve Carell-Jim Carrey comedy earned just $3.72 million: a total that included Thursday pm previews. The Warner Brothers release was expected to earn $18 million this weekend; but after its disappointing start, $11 million may be the limit of Wonderstone’s box office magic.  We’ll have full details tomorrow.

 Title Friday Total
1.  Oz the Great and Powerful $11,410,000 $114.2
2.  The Call $6,200,000 $6.2
3.  The Incredible Burt Wonderstone $3,720,000 $3.7
4.  Jack the Giant Slayer $1,750,000 $49.4
5.  Identity Thief $1,400,000 $120.5

THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE Review

[This is a re-post of my review from SXSW 2013.  The Incredible Burt Wonderstone opens today in wide release.]

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone may celebrate the childlike wonder and unadulterated joy of magic. It may profess the power of awe and possibility. But its true motives are simple and pure: make the audience laugh by almost any means necessary. Those means are usually along the lines of the silly, slightly demented, biting, and occasionally dark humor that may not share the story’s values, but they get consistent comedy out of a charming albeit slightly conventional premise. Working from Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley‘s sharp script with great performances from its cast, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is a trick we know, but it’s one performed well.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein Talk BURT WONDERSTONE, Their Love of Magic, Working with Jim Carrey, HORRIBLE BOSSES 2, VACATION, and More

Screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are quickly becoming the go-to guys when it comes to high-profile comedies.  The duo penned 2011’s massive hit Horrible Bosses and its upcoming sequel, they wrote the script for this year’s great-looking animated follow-up Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, and they wrote and will make their directorial debut on a new Vacation film this year with Ed Helms starring as the grown-up Rusty Griswold.  Their latest film, the magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, opens in theaters today and it’s a swell mix of ridiculous characters and delightfully dark humor, with some very funny comedic performances from Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Steve Buscemi, and Olivia Wilde.

I recently attended the press junket for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone in Las Vegas, and while there I got to sit down with Daley and Goldstein for a one-on-one interview.  The duo talked about their love of magic growing up, how crazy it was to get Jim Carrey in their film, what Carrey brought to the role, the many different versions of the film’s script, and their penchant for taking jokes to some unexpected and wonderfully dark places.  The two also talked about their work on Horrible Bosses 2, Cloudy 2, the Vacation film, Secret Histories, and much more.  Hit the jump to read the full interview.

Steve Buscemi Talks BURT WONDERSTONE, BOARDWALK EMPIRE Season 4, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, and His Work in Adam Sandler’s Films

Opening this Friday is director Don Scardino’s magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.  The film stars Steve Carell as a Vegas magician whose relationship with his partner becomes strained as the two start getting upstaged by a hipper illusionist, played by Jim Carrey.  The pic is full of wild comedic performances, and one of the highlights of the film is most certainly Steve Buscemi as Carell’s partner Anton Marvelton.  A beloved character actor, Buscemi has been shining in supporting roles for years, and he’s one of the few who can seamlessly move between drama and comedy.  Buscemi has been doing stellar work as the lead on the HBO drama series Boardwalk Empire for the past few years, but with Burt Wonderstone he gets to show off his comedic chops in a fairly large supporting role as Anton.

I recently attended the press junket for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone in Las Vegas, and while there I got to sit down with Buscemi for a one-on-one interview.  The actor talked about how refreshing it was to play a character like Anton, how he goes about choosing which film projects he’s going to make during his hiatus from Boardwalk Empire, and much more.  Buscemi also talked about the upcoming fourth season of Boardwalk Empire, his voice work in Monsters University, and his many memorable roles in Adam Sandler’s films.

Opening this Friday is director Don Scardino’s magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.  The film stars Steve Carell as a Vegas magician whose relationship with his partner (Steve Buscemi) becomes strained as the two start getting upstaged by a hipper illusionist (Jim Carrey).  The screenplay by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses) takes the story to some deliciously dark places while maintaining a sincere center, and Carrey is fantastically over the top with his David Blaine-esque magician character, harkening back to the actor’s classically nutty performances from early in his career.  You can read Matt’s positive review here.

I recently got the chance to attend the press junket for Burt Wonderstone in Las Vegas, and while there I participated in a press conference with Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Olivia Wilde, Steve Buscemi, John Francis Daley, and Jonathan Goldstein.  The cast and screenwriters talked about the experience of filming on the streets of Las Vegas, the parallels between magicians and comedians, attempting to master some slight-of-hand tricks for the film, crafting their outrageous characters, and much, much more.  Hit the jump to read or listen to the full press conference, which also includes a great Rodney Dangerfield story from Carrey.

Every once in a while I use this space to tout a recently released Blu-ray/DVD that I missed in theaters but, via the magic of home video, was finally able to check out from the comfort of my couch (click here to see me gush about The Perks of Being a Wallflower). Today I’ll do the same by encouraging you to check out co-writer/director Scott Derrickson‘s horror pic Sinister. There’s nothing spectacular going on here, it’s just an effective movie with several scenes that I found genuinely frightening/disturbing. Moreover, it’s probably the last widely-released horror entry since Insidious that left me turning some of the lights on in the house shortly after it ended.

With my “Super Cool Blu-ray Pick of the Week” out of the way, this week’s Top 5 includes interviews from the set of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, some drama-inducing first set images from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a set visit recap and interviews for Park Chan-wook‘s Stoker, Jack the Giant Slayer interviews, and the first trailer and poster for director James Wan‘s The Conjuring. As you may expect, a brief recap and link to each of these can be found completely free of charge after the jump.

Warner Bros. has released the first clip from director Don Scardino’s (30 Rock) magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.  The film stars Steve Carell as a Vegas magician whose relationship with his partner (Steve Buscemi) becomes strained as the two start getting upstaged by a hipper illusionist (Jim Carrey).  This clip finds Carell and Carrey squaring off in a bar, and it’s chock full of the sort of delightful goofiness that I was hoping would result from a Carell/Carrey team-up.  Carrey looks to have put together a great character for the pic, and I look forward to seeing more of his antics in the full film.
