Next month Mondo will have its very own convention, MondoCon, and they’re starting out with a bang.  Today they’ve announced their full lineup of artists and programming as well as some of the amazing artwork they’ll have available.  One of the hottest items this year will undoubtedly be Alex RossThe Iron Giant poster.  This is the celebrated artist’s first time working with Mondo, and hopefully it won’t be his last.  As for The Iron Giant, Mondo is going all out in celebrating the wonderful film’s 15th anniversary, and in addition to Ross’ poster, they will also be putting the movie’s soundtrack on vinyl for the first time with two package designs from artists Jason Edmiston and Jay Shaw.

But these items are just a small part of a much larger convention that will have plenty of cool events.  Hit the jump to check out Ross’ Iron Giant poster, the vinyl covers, and to learn about what you can expect from this year’s MondoCon.

Mondo is a company with a magic touch in the sense that all the great work they do sends fans into a frenzy.  Their limited edition posters sell out in minutes.  Their gallery showings get people lined up for days.  They release vinyl albums for beloved soundtracks.  The company continues to expand, and their latest endeavors are sure to arouse even more passion from fans.  Earlier today, Mondo announced that they will start selling toys starting with figures based on The Iron Giant, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Alfred Hitchcock.

Last week, I spoke with Mondo CEO Justin Ishmael about the company’s foray into toys, and he revealed not only details about the individual toys, but also talked about their availability, how much they might cost, when pre-orders might begin, and more.  We also talked about what the company has planned for Comic-Con as well as their first annual convention, MondoCon.  Hit the jump for the highlights and the full interview.

Mondo Enters the Toy Business; Reveals THE IRON GIANT and “Lil’ Mikey” TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Toys

After driving fans wild with posters, albums, and more, Mondo is now entering a new arena: toys.  The company is going to come out with guns blazing as their first releases will be a 16″ The Iron Giant figure, a 1/6th-scale Alfred Hitchcock action figure, and an adorable “Lil’ Mikey”, a vinyl figure based off Mike Mitchell‘s artwork for Michelangelo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  Because Mondo is a by-fans, for-fans enterprise, Mondo CEO Justin Ishmael says they chose The Iron Giant because they love the movie.  “It’s not like it’s an anniversary,” says Ishmael.  “This could be the year after the movie came out, we would be trying to do this.”  According to USA Today, The Iron Giant figure has “30 points of articulation, lights up, has a magnetic ‘S’ from a “Seafood” sign to put on his chest, and has an interchangeable dented head and weaponized arm to make a ‘War’ version of the character.”  The figure’s design came straight from the files director Brad Bird used to create The Iron Giant.

Hit the jump to check out the Iron Giant and “Lil’ Mikey” toys, learn more about the figures, and what Ishmael is hoping to accomplish in the long term.

Want to See a High-Quality Blu-ray Release for THE IRON GIANT? Brad Bird Says You Should Ask Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

The Iron Giant is one of my all-time favorite movies.  I have two Iron Giant Mondo posters.  I have a little Iron Giant toy on my desk.  What I don’t have is the movie on Blu-ray because it’s not available in that format.  The special edition DVD is nice, but writer-director Brad Bird made a visually impressive movie, and it’s worth a high-end Blu-ray release that not only looks good, but also has plenty of great extras.

Earlier today, Bird was asked on Twitter about when we might see the movie on Blu-ray.  Bird explained that he’s spoken with Warner Bros. about it, but he wants more than a bare bones release.  I couldn’t agree more.  I know it’s kind of a cult film, but plenty of cult movies get excellent Blu-ray releases, and I think WB might be surprised at how many people want The Iron Giant to get the same treatment.  As Bird points out, the only way to get an awesome The Iron Giant Blu-ray is to ask for it.  Shoot @WBHomeEnt a tweet, and please be polite.  And if you feel like crying today, hit the jump.

CRAZY 4 CULT 2 Book Review

Artwork based on preexisting material is tricky because great art challenges us rather than comforts us with the familiar.  In recent years, a multitude of artists have come forward to build work based on fandom, and there’s nothing necessarily wrong with that.  Not every painting and sculpture has to be drawn from landscapes and models, and pulling from popular culture doesn’t necessarily hurt the piece.  Pop Art, one of the most striking artistic movements of the 20th century, partially grew out of comic books.

Where it gets murky in the case of fan-art is how much the artist can show appreciation while still establishing something that’s daring enough to be more than comfort food for movie nerds (and I say this as someone whose apartment is lined with Mondo posters).  Crazy 4 Cult 2 runs the gamut of stunning tributes to lazy mash-ups, and that range makes it a curious and revealing collection.

We’ve just about made it to Mondo’s Universal Monsters gallery show—their biggest show ever, opening this Friday and playing home to nearly 20 posters and 50-plus originals (according to Mondo’s creative director, Justin Ishmael, at tonight’s 3D screening of Creature From The Black Lagoon)—but that doesn’t mean all of Mondo’s other business has been put on hold.  In fact, they’re going to be dropping the remaining prints from their recent New York Comic-Con appearance tomorrow morning.  Wanna know what’s going on sale, what it’ll cost you, and what it looks like?  Meet me after the jump, folks.

If you’re a Mondo fan and headed to New York Comic-Con this weekend, I strongly advise you to get to the con when it opens Friday morning at 9:30am.  That’s because even though most assumed Mondo would release their prints like they did in San Diego (one at a time), I’ve learned that when the doors open, everything is for sale!

But it gets better.

Late tonight, as the convention was closing, I was able to take pictures of everything at the Mondo booth!  If you’ve been wondering what would be sold at NYCC, Mondo has prints for Shaun of the Dead, Lord of the Rings, The Iron Giant, Phantasm, City of the Living Dead, Kill Bill, The Foghorn Leghorn, and Friday the 13th Part III 3D!  In addition, a number of these prints have variants.  Hit the jump for a ton of images and artists info.

In case your wallets weren’t empty enough after Mondo’s slew of great Avengers posters, Alamo’s boutique art store now has some more amazing posters headed our way.  First up, they will be selling a gorgeous new poster for The Iron Giant by Laurent Durieux at an upcoming screening, and hopefully they’ll have some left over to sell online. I’m still a little partial to Kevin Tong‘s poster for the movie, but just barely.

Mondo has also released images of their posters for 13 Assassins by Vania Zouravliov, The Mole People by Phantom City Creative, and The Hills Have Eyes by Jeff Proctor.  These posters (not including Iron Giant) will go on sale tomorrow at a random time, so be sure you’re following @MondoNews for the announcement.  Hit the jump to check out the posters along with size, pricing, and edition info.

6 Gorgeous Mondo Posters from This Past Weekend’s Mondo Mystery Movies Series

by     Posted 2 years, 341 days ago

Mondo has kicked off a series of screenings where the movie being shown hasn’t been announced.  Folks by a ticket, go to the screening, and then find out what they’re seeing and what awesome poster they, and only they, will be able to purchase.  Past screenings have included Akira and Jurassic Park, but this weekend Mondo pulled out all the stops by doing a six-movie marathon in Los Angeles.  Attendees were treated to screenings and posters for The Iron Giant (by far my favorite of the bunch), 28 Days Later, Hellraiser, Assault on Precinct 13, City of Lost Children, and The Mist.

I’ve included all the posters after the jump.  Be warned: seeing these may make you sad because we’ll never have them.  They won’t be sold on the Mondo store and unless you’re willing to pay a premium to eBay jerk-offs who don’t understand what’s special about these posters, you and I will never own them.
