Opening this Friday is director Len Wiseman‘s remake of Total Recall.  Based on the short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale by Philip K. Dick, Total Recall stars Colin Farrell in the role originated by Arnold Schwarzenegger.  In the film, Farrell stars as Douglas Quaid, a man who is bored with his life (even though he’s married to Kate Beckinsale) and seeks to have adventurous memories implanted in his brain.  However, after visiting Recall, both friends and family are after him for different reasons.  But the big problem is he doesn’t know what’s real.  The film also stars Jessica Biel, John Cho, Bill Nighy, and Bryan Cranston.

The other day I got to speak with Bryan Cranston here in Los Angeles.  We talked about his reaction to the finished film, his experiences at this year’s Comic-Con, deleted scenes, The Lincoln Lawyer sequel, and Breaking Bad.  For fans of Breaking Bad, Cranston told me, “episode 5 of the fifth season is the biggest episode we’ve ever done as far as scope and cost.”  Hit the jump to watch.

Now playing, in limited release, is director William Friedkin‘s controversial thriller Killer Joe.  Based on the play by Tracey Letts, the NC-17-rated film centers on a son (Emile Hirsch) and his father (Thomas Haden Church) who hire a cop moonlighting as a hitman (Matthew McConaughey) to murder their mother in order to get her insurance policy.  The film also stars Juno Temple as Hirsch’s sister and Gina Gershon.  Loaded with great performances and an insane third act, Killer Joe is definitely worth checking out.  For more on the film, here’s the trailer, a clip, and my interview with Hirsch.

The other day I sat down with McConaughey here in Los Angeles. We talked about making Killer Joe, his initial reaction to the script, how the finished film compares to the script, his favorite movies, and more.  In addition, we talked about his movies with Richard Linklater, Wooderson (from Dazed and Confused), and the status of The Lincoln Lawyer sequel.  Hit the jump to watch..

Director Brad Furman’s adaptation of Michael Connelly’s novel The Lincoln Lawyer was a sizeable hit when the thriller opened last year, and given that Matthew McConaughey’s character of Mickey Haller appears in subsequent Connelly novels, many were hoping we’d be seeing more of Haller in future films.  Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns revealed last December that a sequel to the film was in the works as well as a television series, and now we have an update from McConaughey himself on the status of the follow-up.

Steve got the chance to speak with McConaughey earlier today for his upcoming thriller Killer Joe, and the actor spoke a bit about the Lincoln Lawyer sequel including his eagerness to return to the character and what the follow-up would entail.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns was on CNBC this morning to talk about what lays ahead for the studio.  In between touching on possible business deal with Summit Entertainment and talking up The Hunger Games, Burns also provided some new updates on some of the studio’s upcoming projects.  Here are the quick and dirty bullet points:

• It was announced back in August that Lionsgate would develop their hit movie The Lincoln Lawyer into a TV series with ABC.  However, Burns revealed they’ll also be doing a second movie.
• To the surprise of no one, Saw 3D was not the final entry into the successful horror franchise.  Burns expects there will be a new Saw someday.  Huzzah.
• Lionsgate is developing a new series with Netflix called Orange Is the New Black.  The show is from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan.

It will be interesting to see how Lionsgate attempts to balance Lincoln Lawyer both as a TV series and a film franchise.  Is Matthew McConaughey enough to draw out an audience that can already get the character at home?  Can the lead in the TV series out-McConaughey McConaughey?
