Evil Dead was the clear box office champ this weekend. The horror remake earned an estimated $26 million from 3,025 locations, or about $5 million more than originally projected. The weekend’s only other ‘new’ release was Jurassic Park 3D. With $18.2 million from 2,771 runs, the converted-classic fell to fourth behind the more-current 3D hit, The Croods.

Thirty years after the original’s release, Evil Dead is back. One of horror’s most beloved cult hits returned to theatres this weekend, backed by an aggressive marketing campaign that dubbed it “the most terrifying film you will ever experience.” The jury’s still out on that particular claim – audiences gave the film a middling C+ CinemaScore – but the extra attention did allow Evil Dead to secure the highest R-rated horror opening so far this year.

2013 hasn’t been the best year for R-rated releases… or for horror films. The genre’s highest debut was the PG-13 Mama with $28.4 million; and while February was swamped by adults-only action-thrillers, it was not until last month’s Olympus Has Fallen that the genre had an impressive domestic opening. Evil Dead was originally expected to open in-line with the $21.7 million of January’s Texas Chainsaw 3D. Considering the latter’s 3D price advantage (not to mention the increased awareness for a franchise that has produced three releases in the past decade), this weekend’s win is especially sweet for Evil Dead.

There were no blockbusters on this September frame but, after last weekend’s dismal returns, it’s hard to feel disappointed. Aided by 3D technology, Resident Evil: Retribution reigned with $21.1 million – more than twice what The Possession earned in first place last weekend. Finding Nemo 3D also had a ticket-price advantage although, in this case, the 2003 Pixar classic could not match the gross of last year’s 3D The Lion King re-release.

Overall, the domestic box office remained down 18% from 2011 levels but, because we’ve gotten used to down weekends over the past month, the return of the $20 million-plus debut with Resident Evil: Retribution was reason enough to celebrate. The decade-old Resident Evil franchise has been a mid-September staple since 2004’s Resident Evil: Apocalypse (Resident Evil debuted in March 2002) and has remained a consistent performer for Screen Gems ever since. In terms of domestic openings and worldwide grosses, the RE series got a little more lucrative with each new entry – the dream for any studio harboring franchise fantasies.

Even so, by 2009, it seemed that Resident Evil had run its course. 2007’s Resident Evil: Extinction earned a domestic total of $50.6 million (short of the $51.2 million of Apocalypse) and, though international earnings remained the life-blood of the series, it was difficult to see how a fourth feature could be justified. As it happened, the 3D revolution gave producers all the justification they ...

Even with Saturday’s family trade and higher ticket prices, Disney’s 3D re-issue of Beauty and the Beast could not catch Contraband this weekend. From its 2,863 locations Universal’s R-rated drama took in an estimated $24.1 million – a figure well above early expectations for the Mark Wahlberg vehicle. The other BIG news is the changing fortunes of last weekend’s number one film, The Devil Inside. Estimates have taken the film from number six – down to number eleven – and back up to number seven all within an hour. We’re hoping to get it right this with this one but, keep in mind, it’s all estimates until Monday morning…

To start, you may have noticed that the first draft of our top ten featured a spectacular drop for The Devil Inside – right out of the top ten. Turns out, not so much! At 77%, the descent of The Devil Inside was dramatic – although nowhere near as dramatic as it first appeared. In fact, 2009’s Friday the 13th can still be proud of showing the biggest fall from first place at 80%. My sincerest apologies to Paramount for going with what was obviously bad intell. Now that we have that settled, on to brighter fortunes…

Recent box office history is littered with R-rated dramas that failed to open strongly (January’s a particularly bleak month, what with 2010’s Edge ...

It may not be the overwhelming win that its pricey PR push promised, but America’s new number one movie Real Steel did score the highest debut of any truly ‘new’ release since Rise of the Planet of the Apes two months ago. With $27.3 million from its 3,440 locations, the family-friendly robot boxing movie also earned almost three times what its nearest competitor, George Clooney’s The Ides of March, saw on its first weekend.

If you’ve been paying attention to the box office for the past two months you know that there was almost no question that Real Steel would come out on top this weekend. It wasn’t that the PG-13 film had strong tracking (it didn’t) or a built-in fanbase (well, maybe just the devotees of Mattel’s “Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots”); nope. Real Steel’s ascendency was pre-ordained by the fact that audiences had run out of holdover titles to favor.

The past nine weeks have seen just two new releases hit number one, not including the re-release of The Lion King 3D: the aforementioned Apes and Contagion. The law of diminishing returns demanded that a newbie step up and, goofy trailers or not, the boxing robots of Real Steel were really the only option. With a first place finish a lock, the only question was how big a domestic opening the Shawn Levy pic could command.

All along, projection’s seemed to have the picture stalling in the $25 million range ...

For the first time in a month, a brand new movie is set to top the weekend box office (the re-release of The Lion King doesn’t really count). Real Steel, the heartwarming tale of an ex-fighter, a robot and a dream, entered the ring on Friday with an estimated $8.6 million from 3,440 locations. That means that the Disney/Dreamworks release is on track to take in at least $25 million by Sunday - more than any new release has scored since August. Still, with a budget rumored to top $100 million, Real Steel would need to claim a bigger purse before it could call itself a bonafide box office champ. The weekend’s second new release was never destined to be a big money contender; but with a Friday opening of $3.5 million from 2,199 locations, George Clooney’s The Ides of March should at least finish in the modest $10 million range that many expected. Details and analysis tomorrow.

With three new releases plus three strong holdovers, this weekend turned out to be one of the most difficult to predict in terms of box office numbers. In the end, it was the week-old Dolphin Tale that emerged victorious: leaping over Friday’s champ Moneyball, the still-ferocious Lion King 3D and the critically-acclaimed newcomer 50/50.

It doesn’t happen very often but, for the second time in as many months, a film that debuted below the top spot has jumped into first place. We had The Help back in August and now Dolphin Tale, which opened in third place last weekend with $19.1 million. Alcon Entertainment’s heart-warming family pic had good word of mouth going into its sophomore frame; still, on one of the year’s most crowded frames, very few imagined Dolphin would be able to claim top-spot bragging rights. Hopefully, those rights will transfer into cash because, even with the film’s excellent hold of 75%, its domestic cume has barely topped its $37 million budget.

Moneyball is in a similar spot. Though the film can boast two number one Friday wins and some of the best reviews of the year (95% on Rotten Tomatoes), its domestic cume still falls short of its $50 million budget. Luckily, Moneyball’s legs (down just 37% this week) look solid enough to keep it in the game for the next few weeks.

Remember when The Lion King was re-released in 3D and the ads told us it would be in theatres ...

Moneyball won the pot on its second Friday with an estimated $3.9 million, though there is a good chance that either of September’s family hits, Dolphin Tale or The Lion King 3D will end up the weekend winner. With Friday numbers, I usually like to give some indication of what Sunday’s top ten will look like but, today, I’m not sure that will be possible. On top of the very close estimates between the holdover titles, there are four new releases in the mix: three of which are running well below their pre-release projections. So far, What’s Your Number? is lagging 85% behind Anna Farris’ last comedy hit The House Bunny. 50/50 is doing half the business of 2009’s cancer comedy Funny People and the Universal thriller Dream House looks like a winner by sticking to its projected three-day opening of $8 million! That leaves Courageous. Haven’t heard of it? The Christian drama has come out strong, with a debut of $3.1 million and a projected weekend that should nearly double its studio’s expectations of $5 million. Details tomorrow.

Once again, it looks like I was foolish to bet on Moneyball. Blinded by the strong opening day of this long-time underdog, I completely forgot that last weekend’s champ would have a home field advantage on Saturday. The final score put The Lion King 3D back on top and added another $22.1 million to the re-release’s lifetime stats. Moneyball had to settle for second, though the estimates between it and the week’s newest family film, Dolphin Tale, are close enough that the baseball flick could conceivably fall to third by Monday.

By now you probably know the story of Moneyball. Based on the book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side), director Steven Soderbergh signed on to direct back in 2004, dropped out, then came back in 2009 with Brad Pitt as star. Days before shooting was set to begin, Sony showed Soderbergh the door for the last time over “creative differences.” It looked like the project was finished, but Pitt stayed supportive and, with new director Bennett Miller and a script polish from Aaron Sorkin, here we are.

Moneyball opened Friday in 2,993 locations and walked off with an estimated $20.6 million and what (for now) is second place. That’s enough to give the film the all-time best opening for a baseball movie, not adjusted for inflation, ahead of the $19.6 million Benchwarmers earned in 2006. The reported budget for the PG-13 Moneyball is $50 million, so with the ...

Now that is a title I never thought I would write. Two years ago it looked like Sony’s tale of baseball underdogs was dead in the water, but look at Moneyball now! Number one on Friday with an estimated $6.8 million and almost guaranteed to win the weekend with a projected $20 million. That is a bit higher than original studio estimates and, if achieved, would give Moneyball the biggest opening ever for a baseball-themed feature. At number two after its big re-release last weekend is Disney’s The Lion King 3D, which means that the new family heart-warmer, Dolphin Tale, had to settle for third and an estimated $5.1 million. The weekend’s third and fourth new releases round out the top five: Lionsgate’s Abduction, with Taylor Lautner, scored an estimated $3.8 million while Killer Elite, with Jason Statham and Clive Owen, was not far behind with $3.4 million. Both films are currently looking at an opening of $11 million or so. Details and analysis tomorrow.

After seeing the movie modifier ‘3D’ lose almost all of its cache over the past year or so, who knew that an animated re-issue with that three dimensional makeover could roar this loud at the box office? Doubling even the most sanguine early projections, Disney’s The Lion King 3D took in an estimated $29.3 million this weekend from its 2,330 (mostly 3D) locations to become this weekend’s undisputed box office ruler.

It’s safe to say that, before Friday, few box office watchers had much of an idea how this weekend’s box office would play out. Unlike a week ago, when one film received the lion’s share of the early buzz, this frame had multiple variables that thwarted an easy prediction. Chief among those, the film that is currently at number one: The Lion King 3D.

Back in June of 1994 The Lion King earned an enormous $40.8 million on its first (wide) weekend in theatres. That equals approximately $62.3 million adjusted for inflation or more than some of this summer’s big comic book titles made in their own debuts. Eventually, The Lion King took in over $300 million in the US alone; making it the undisputed king of animation for nearly a decade, until computer generated toons like Shrek and Finding Nemo began to hit their strides. Even with the high tech competition, however, The Lion King remained in animation’s all-time top five, aided ...

Mark Henn (“Young Simba”) and Tony Bancroft (“Pumbaa”) were two of the supervising animators on The Lion King, when the film was originally produced in the ‘90s. With an unforgettable story and breathtaking animation, the now beloved characters are returning to the big screen, for the first time ever in 3D. This new format immerses viewers in these epic settings, in such a way that they’ve never been able to before, and invites new generations to experience the “Circle of Life.”

At a press day held at the Walt Disney Animation Research Library (ARL), animators Mark Henn and Tony Bancroft spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about how they each ended up on their career paths, how they came to be responsible for their respective characters, the most complicated thing to animate at the time, what it’s like to see these characters brought to life in 3D, and how things have changed since they originally made the film. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Question: How did you guys become animators? Was it just something you had always wanted to do?

TONY BANCROFT: I was socially inept and geeky.

MARK HENN: He wanted to get the girls and thought this was a good way.

BANCROFT: I wasn’t a jock, so I thought that, if I drew funny pictures, the girls might like me more.

HENN: No, pure and simple, it’s been a boyhood dream for me, and for a lot of us. For me, it ...

With films that have grossed more than one and a half billion dollars worldwide, Rob Minkoff is one of only a few filmmakers to have directed both live-action and animated features, and innovated the use of the combined mediums. Along with supervising the creation of The Lion King, he’s worked with an incredible array of award-winning talent throughout his career. Now, the animated masterpiece that has won Oscars, inspired a hugely successful Broadway show, and is the best-selling home entertainment release of all-time is returning to theaters in 3D, for the first time ever.

At a press day for the film that was held at the Walt Disney Animation Research Library (ARL), which houses over 60 million pieces of art from over 80 years, the film’s co-director spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about the decision to convert the much-loved animated feature to 3D, how much more immersive the entire experience is now, how animation has changed since the film’s original release, the difference between directing an animated feature versus a live-action one, and how exciting and gratifying it is to see animation brought to life. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Question: What was it about The Lion King that made you decide to convert it to 3D? Did you have any hesitation about converting it, at all?

ROB MINKOFF: Well, when I first heard about it, I was excited about it because 3D was all the rage and everybody was talking about 3D, and you don’t ...

Starting on September 16th, audiences can catch a special two-week theatrical run of the Oscar and Golden Globe winning The Lion King, for the first time ever in Disney Digital 3D, before then becoming available on Blu-ray 3D on October 4th. Having been nearly a decade since The Lion King last appeared on the big screen, it’s easy to understand why fans of the film, and Disney fans in general, are anxious to see it, and it’s exciting that new generations will have the opportunity to discover it, for the first time.

During a press day held at the Animation Research Library (ARL), which houses over 60 million pieces of Disney art, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Stereoscopic Supervisor Robert Neuman spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about the 3D conversion of the hand-drawn animated classic. He talked about how he went from Layout Artist and Supervisor to the position he’s in now, made The Lion King an obvious choice for this process, how they approached converting the film, the challenges of giving depth to hand-drawn animation, and the care they have to take with such a classic film. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Question: Where did your interest in 3D conversion come from and how did you get started doing it?

ROBERT NEUMAN: What I had been doing in the industry was layout, which is the animation equivalent of cinematography. Starting with Dinosaur, I’d been doing layout and designing camera work and the designing elements of visual ...

Disney's The Lion King will release into theaters this year in a new 3D format for the very first time on September 16th. The film was a childhood favorite of mine, and every time I hear “The Circle of Life,” I get goosebumps. Needless to say, I look forward to viewing the film on the big screen, something I may have done when I was little but can't recall. However, I do wonder how a film from the '90s will hold up, animation wise, and how a 3D conversion of it will fare on the big screen.

Today, Disney sent over some images showing just what the conversion process entails, including adding notes of depth and then using filters to key in on what will be in the foreground, background, and everywhere in between. The process is a lot more difficult than this, but it gives us a great idea of what the process entails on a basic, easy to understand level. Hit the jump to view those images, including a description of what we are looking at, a discussion with the stereographer Robert Neuman about the procedure itself, and my impressions of the scenes they showed before Cars 2.

First, let's get to the good stuff. Disney sent over two scenes that show off the process. The first is of Pride Rock and the second is of Scar. The basic process is taking a finished image, adding a layer and marking depth details, and then using a layering system to key ...

The Lion King will likely always hold the record for the movie I've seen most in the theater (11). If Disney is interested in luring me to the next generation to purchase a 3D Blu-ray player, plucking at that nostalgia might do it. Earlier this year, Disney announced they would release a number of films on Blu-ray in 3D, including two of the classics: Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. The Beauty and the Beast re-release has been on the agenda longer, but The Lion King will be the first one we see.

Disney has just released a trailer for the four-disc Blu-ray that promises a Fall 2011 release. Moreover, /Film informs that the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood will host a limited theatrical engagement from September 2 to October 6, which gives me the opportunity to shoot for viewing #12. (You and I can buy tickets here.) Watch the trailer after the break.

Click to Yahoo! for HD. And keep an eye on the Amazon page for an official release date.

Here's the official Blu-ray product description:
The wait is over. For the first time ever, experience the majesty of Disney’s epic animated masterpiece as it roars off the screen and into your living room on Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D. With a spectacular digital picture, spine-tingling high definition sound and immersive bonus features—you will feel the love for this critically acclaimed and universally beloved classic like never before.

Embark on an extraordinary coming-of-age adventure as Simba, a lion cub who cannot wait ...

While the 3D format continues its move towards home entertainment with more and more titles being released on 3D Blu-ray every month, it looks like Disney is getting in on the action as well. The Walt Disney Company announced today that it plans to release at least fifteen films on 3D Blu-ray throughout 2011. Titles set to hit 3D home video include The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Nightmare Before Christmas, TRON: Legacy, and Tangled. Not only will the films be presented in 3D, but the special 3D Blu-ray release will come complete with 3D menus, 3D trailers, and an introduction to the world of Disney 3D from The Lion King characters Timon and Pumba. Executive Vice-President and General Manager of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Lori MacPherson had this to say:
As our contemporary library of 3D content continues to grow, and the original artists and filmmakers meticulously ‘dimensionalize’ their work for release on the Blu-ray 3D format, we will be offering movie-lovers the most incredible in-home entertainment experience they will ever have
Hit the jump for more, including the other Disney titles planned for a 3D Blu-ray release. [We've updated this story with the official press release]

In addition to the aforementioned titles, Disney also plans to release Meet the Robinsons, G-FORCE, and Chicken Little on 3D Blu-ray. While no one has mentioned Toy Story 3 yet, it’s probably a safe bet that the film will get a 3D Blu-ray release as well (I mean come on, if Meet ...
