Adam Shankman is in talks to reteam with his The Pacifier star Vin Diesel for the action comedy The Machine.  As we reported last July when Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville) came on board to rewrite the script by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (The Pacifier), “the story centers on a human-like machine (Diesel) created in secrecy by the Pentagon as the world’s first true ultimate weapon. Twenty years after the project was buried and decommissioned for reasons unknown, The Machine is discovered by a kid who befriends him. When the government learns it has been reactivated, the Machine must protect the family harboring him.”  Deadline also uses this synopsis in their report, so I assume Gough and Millar didn’t make any radical changes.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how you make a terrible family film that’s going to make a boatload of money.  No one here is laboring under any delusions of grandeur.

Last year, we reported that Vin Diesel was set to star in and produce the family action-comedy The Machine. The story centers on “a human-like machine (Diesel) created in secrecy by the Pentagon as the world’s first true ultimate weapon. Twenty years after the project was buried and decommissioned for reasons unknown, The Machine is discovered by a kid who befriends him. When the government learns it has been reactivated, the Machine must protect the family harboring him.”  Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (The Pacifier) were hired to write the script for fun and profit, but Deadline reports that Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are now in talks to re-write the screenplay.  MGM hopes to turn The Machine into a franchise.  We previously reported that Peter Segal (Get Smart) was circling the director’s chair, but Deadline makes no mention of him in their story.

Back in August 2011, we reported that the duo were angling to make their feature directing debut by adapting the young adult series Homelanders.  There’s currently no word on the status of that project.

Peter Segal (Get Smart) is reportedly in talks to direct Vin Diesel (The Fast and the Furious) in the action film, The Machine for MGM.  At the moment, Segal is currently attached to Warner Bros. pictures Grudge Match and the adaptation of the manga, Bleach, so this more than likely won’t be his next feature.  Segal is producing Bleach and may end up directing the picture, while he is attached to direct the Grudge Match, about a boxing rematch between aging fighters. Diesel, meanwhile, is currently in post-production on The Untitled Chronicles of Riddick Sequel, which we can expect to see sometime early next year.  Hit the jump for more information on his involvement in The Machine, as well as the picture’s plot synopsis.

Over the weekend I had the rare privilege of speaking with two of the funniest men in Hollywood, Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. The two have managed to maintain the rarest of comedy careers: they have had tremendous success in writing big studio films (Night At The Museum) while still working with their specific brand of off-beat humor (Reno 911!).

During our extended discussion, we talked about their recent FX pilot Alabama, their massive slate of upcoming films and of course their new screenwriting book Writing Movies For Fun And Profit. We got to talk a lot about many films that haven’t been announced yet so you’re not gonna want to miss this. Continue reading for our full discussion.

Vin Diesel provided the voice for eponymous character in 1999′s The Iron Giant and he’s about go back to robotics.  Heat Vision reports that Diesel will produce and star in the action comedy The Machine for MGM.  Diesel will play “a human-like machine created in secrecy by the Pentagon as the world’s first true ultimate weapon. Twenty years after the project was buried and decommissioned for reasons unknown, The Machine is discovered by a kid who befriends him. When the government learns it has been reactivated, the Machine must protect the family harboring him.”  So it’s kind of like The Iron Giant except without the charming animation.

Hit the jump for more details on the film and why I don’t think we’re getting anything close to the level of quality seen in The Iron Giant.
