If last weekend’s box office debut of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 was a tad underwhelming, it made up some ground with a big Thanksgiving haul.  The sequel took in an estimated $56.8 million for the three-day weekend and brought its domestic total above $225 million after twelve days.  That left only table scraps for this weekend’s box office newcomers.  The Penguins of Madagascar came in second with an estimated $25.8 million while Horrible Bosses 2 opened way back in fifth place with $15.7 million.

 Title Weekend Total
1.  Mockingjay – Part 1 $56,875,000 $225.7

Friday Box Office: MOCKINGJAY PART 1 Soars Over New Thanksgiving Releases

The 2014 Thanksgiving box office won’t set any new records, but the complete domination of Mockingjay – Part 1 will at least prove that there’s a lot of life left in The Hunger Games franchise.  After opening more than 20% below Catching Fire last weekend, the penultimate chapter in the saga of Katniss Everdeen had no trouble staying ahead of Thanksgiving’s new releases: The Penguins of Madagascar and Horrible Bosses 2.   Both opened on Wednesday, though the two films combined didn’t come close to Mockingjay – Part 1’s $49.7 million estimate for the first three days of the long holiday frame.  As expected, Katniss cleaned up on Black Friday with an estimated $24.1 million, or a drop of 56% from the film’s opening one week ago.

Benedict-Cumberbatch-Tom-McGrath-The-Penguins-of-Madagascar-interview

Opening tomorrow is Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith‘s The Penguins of Madagascar.  DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming spinoff features the espionage-minded birds as they go off on a mission to bring down the nefarious octopus Dave (John Malkovich) even though they end up getting in the way of the professional spy organization the North Wind, which is led by the wolf “Classified” (Benedict Cumberbatch).  The movie also features the voices of Ken Jeong, Annet Mahendru, and Peter Stormare.  For more on the film, check out the trailer.

To help promote the film, I recently got to talk with Benedict Cumberbatch (he plays Agent Classified) and Tom McGrath (he voices Skipper).  They talked about the relationship between Agent Classified and the Penguins, script changes during production, how recording their dialogue separately can be an advantage, and their favorite animated movies.  Hit the jump for what they had to say.

New PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR Trailer: Young Skipper, Kowalski and Rico Meet Baby Private

Remember that footage from the Penguins of Madagascar New York Comic-Con panel showing how a young Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller) and Rico (John DiMaggio) first meet Private (Patrick Stuart)?  The film’s latest trailer actually shows off a good deal of it, minus the leopard seal scuffle, before launching into a roll call montage featuring the penguins and their new cohorts, the North Wind.  Together, they’ll take on Dr. Octavius Brine (John Malkovich), an accomplished geneticist.  Or he is?  Turns out, Dr. Octavius Brine is really Dave, an Octopus who used to live at the Central Park Zoo until the penguins completely overshadowed him, compelling the zoo staff to ship him off to another location.

Hit the jump to catch the gang in action in the latest Penguins of Madagascar trailer.  The film opens in 3D on November 26th and also features the voices of Benedict CumberbatchKen JeongAnnett Mahendru and Peter Stormare.  And in case you missed it, you can also watch my interview with directors Eric Darnell and Simon J. DreamWorks Animation has released a new The Penguins of Madagascar clip that takes us through the beginning of the movie.  Directed by Eric Darnell (Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted) and Simon J. Smith (Bee Movie), the film finds the scene-stealing penguins leading a film of their own as they’re joined by a wolf named Classified (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), who leads a covert team of protective animals.  This is one of the clips they showed at Comic-Con, and like everything else I’ve seen from this movie, it looks surprisingly charming and funny.

The Penguins Battle a Vending Machine in New THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR Clip

While DreamWorks Animation has a kind of “throw everything against the wall and see what sticks” attitude when it comes to their films, every once in a while they put together something special.  I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to the spinoff feature The Penguins of Madagascar, but ever since that first trailer I’ve found myself wanting to see more comedic adventures from the titular penguins.  A new Penguins of Madagascar clip has now landed online, and it once again highlights the humorous interplay amongst the penguins and their love of Cheezy Dibbles as they find themselves squaring off against a vending machine.  It’s funny stuff, and I’m genuinely eager to catch the film in theaters next month.

Last Thursday I headed down to Fox to check out over 30 minutes of footage from The Penguins of Madagascar and about 15 minutes of footage from Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.  Both films are due for release later this year so it was a chance to catch up on what to expect from the more family friendly side of Fox’s upcoming slate.  The seems quite confident when it comes to The Penguins of Madagascar given the amount of stuff we were shown, and they’re not wrong to feel that way.  The film opens in 3D on November 26th, and features the voices of Tom McGrathChris MillerChris KnightsJohn MalkovichBenedict CumberbatchKen JeongAnnett Mahendru, and Peter Stormare.

DreamWorks Animation has released the first The Penguins of Madagascar trailer for the upcoming spinoff of the animated Madagascar franchise. Though the pic may seem like an easy way to extend the lucrative series, this trailer is actually quite funny.  The pic appears to be a throwback to the action films of the 80s and 90s, and the titular penguins are a great source of physical comedy.
