[Note: This is a re-post of my review from the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.  Silver Linings Playbook opens today in limited release.]

We have acceptable levels of “crazy” in our society, and that in itself is kind of crazy. Some psychosis is cute and charming, while other acts of craziness demand hospitalization and medication. This distinction is obviously based on harm, both to others and to oneself. But there’s a “healthy” level of crazy, and the search for that level is what makes David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook sharply comic and surprisingly sweet. O. Russell has once again returned to study the dysfunctional family, and while Silver Linings Playbook is softer than Flirting with Disaster and even The Fighter, it still has enough of an edge to deliver some great jokes, and strong performances to make the emotions ring true.

The first clip from director David O. Russell’s (The Fighter) new film Silver Linings Playbook has gone online.  The pic was launched into the Best Picture conversation following a rapturous response to its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival (read Matt’s review here) where it won the People’s Choice AwardBradley Cooper stars as a man who’s recently been released from a mental hospital after having a nervous breakdown as a result of walking in on his wife sleeping with another man.  However, he’s resolved to get his wife back, but along the way he meets the equally-damaged Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), who’s recovering from her husband’s death.  This clip showcases the strong performances from Cooper and Lawrence as they bond over the various medications they’ve been on over the years, and we get a good sense of Russell’s blend of comedy and drama.  This is definitely one to keep on your radar this fall.

A new trailer has gone online for David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook.  The film stars Bradley Cooper as a man who’s recently been released from a mental hospital after having a nervous breakdown as a result of walking in on his wife sleeping with another man.  However, he’s resolved to get his wife back, but along the way he meets the equally-damaged Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), who’s recovering from her husband’s death.  Silver Linings Playbook was one of the better movies I saw at TIFF this year.  It’s sweet, funny, thoughtful, and this trailer conveys all those aspects (although it opens by showing off one of the film’s best scenes).  The movie will likely be one of the major contenders in this year’s awards race, especially for Lawrence who gives an outstanding performance.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, and Chris TuckerSilver Linings Playbook opens November 21st.

The Weinstein Company has released new images from David O. Russell’s upcoming drama, The Silver Linings PlaybookBradley Cooper plays a former teacher who, after spending four years in a mental institution, moves back in with his mother and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife.  However, he strikes up a relationship with a neighbor (Jennifer Lawrence) who’s also mental problems.  Although the trailer played a bit corny, I liked what I saw from the cast, which also includes Jackie Weaver, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles, and Robert De Niro.  The movie is definitely one of my must-see flicks at the Toronto International Film Festival.

First Trailer for David O. Russell’s SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence

The first trailer for David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook has gone online.   Bradley Cooper plays a former teacher who, after spending four years in a mental institution, moves back in with his mother and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife.  However, he strikes up a relationship with a neighbor (Jennifer Lawrence) who’s also mental problems.  I really like what I’m seeing from the cast, especially Cooper and Lawrence.  The trailer does make the film look a little sacchrine, but Russell has never skewed towards the mawkish, so I’m going to assume the heavy-handed feel-good stuff is designed to make the film appeal to a larger audience.

As everyone knows, opening this weekend is director Gary RossThe Hunger Games.  Based on Suzanne Collins novel and produced by Nina Jacobson, the film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland, Wes Bentley , Alexander Ludwig, Isabelle Fuhrman and Amandla Stenberg.   For more on the film, here’s three clips and six minutes of behind-the-scenes footage, as well as all our previous coverage.

During the recent Los Angeles press junket, I landed an exclusive interview with Jennifer Lawrence.   Since she’s been doing so much press recently, I tried to ask new questions like what’s her favorite movie, director and actor, her karaoke song, what TV shows does she watch, what surprised her the most about making this big tentpole release and the promotion that goes with it, how many takes does she prefer, the sequels, did she call anyone in Twilight to ask ‘What am I getting myself into?’ and more.  In addition, we talked about director David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook where she plays an an ex-sex addict, and she talked about her tabloid “feud” with Kristen Stewart and how it’s completely made up.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

David O. Russell’s THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Set for November 21, 2012

by     Posted 2 years, 317 days ago

The Weinstein Company has set the release date of David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook for November 21, 2012.  Based on the novel by Matthew Quick, the movie centers on a former high school teacher (Bradley Cooper) who returns home after four years in a mental institution to live with his mother (Jackie Weaver) and win back the affection of his estranged wife.  The movie also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles, and Robert De NiroSilver Linings sounds like it could be awards material and now TWC can put “From the Oscar-nominated Director of The Fighter” on the poster.

The Weinsteins will probably take Silver Linings out for a spin on the awards circuit before its November 21st release.  Of course, the Thanksgiving Day weekend is always crowded and so far the date also belongs to Alfonso Cuaron‘s sci-fi drama Gravity, the family comedy Parental Guidance, the Keanu Reeves‘ action-adventure 47 Ronin, and the animated film Rise of the Guardians.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Silver Linings Playbook. Chris Tucker and Julia Stiles have joined Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jackie Weaver, and Robert De Niro in David O. Russell’s adaptation of Matthew Quick’s novel The Silver Linings Playbook.  Cooper plays a former high school teacher returning home from a four year stint in a mental institution to live with his mother (Weaver) and woo back his estranged wife, but instead falls for an unstable woman (Lawrence).  According to Deadline, Stiles will play Lawrence’s older sister.  Last month, we reported that Tucker was in negotiations to play Cooper’s friend from the mental institution who escapes multiple times to visit his pal.  He was also in talks to lead Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (the role ultimately went to Jamie Foxx) and to co-star in the Ben Stiller-Vince Vaughn comedy Neighborhood Watch.

Silver Linings will be Tucker’s first role since 2007′s Rush Hour 3.  As for Stiles, she’s co-starring in the indie films Seconds of Happiness, Between Us, and It’s a Disaster.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Casting Call: Oscar-Nominated Jacki Weaver for THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK; Eric Bana is BRILLIANT

Jacki Weaver and Eric Bana slice

It’s not often that romantic comedies and jewel heists occupy the same space in an article, but that’s where our casting news has taken us.  First up is Jacki Weaver, nominated for an Oscar for her role in last year’s Animal Kingdom.  Weaver is in negotiations to join the David O. Russell (The Fighter) adaptation, The Silver Linings Playbook. The film stars Bradley Cooper as a former high school teacher returning home from a four year stint in a mental institution to live with his mother, played by Weaver. Cast also includes Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro.

Eric Bana (Hanna) is looking to join director Robert Luketic’s (21) heist-thriller, Brilliant.  In a first time writing credit by Gillian Gorfil, who was a producer on Blood Diamond, the script involves a low-level criminal who joins up with polished thieves to attempt a diamond heist.  Hit the jump for more on both of these projects.

Bradley Cooper Replaces Mark Wahlberg in THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK; Robert De Niro in Talks

David O. Russell will round up an impressive cast to star in his next feature, an adaptation of The Silver Linings Playbook.  The details of who this will be exactly are still murky.  Mark Wahlberg was ready to make this his fourth collaboration with Russell, but a delay in production created a scheduling conflict.  Deadline believes Wahlberg is dropping out because of his commitment to Broken City.

On the positive side, the report confirms Jennifer Lawrence for the female lead — she reportedly beat out Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough, and Olivia Wilde for the sought-after role.  In fact, it was Lawrence’s need to shoot The Hunger Games that delayed the schedule beyond Wahlberg’s availability.  Bradley Cooper is resuming talks for the now-vacant role after he  attached with  Anne Hathaway in the early stages of development.  New to the Playbook is Robert De Niro, in negotiations for a role that would the actor reunite with his Limitless co-star (and his would-be Uncharted director).  There is no update on Angelina Jolie’s potential involvement with the project, so I wouldn’t count on it.

The Weinstein Company production will shoot in the fall.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of Matthew Quick’s novel.

Jennifer Lawrence Is the Frontrunner to Star Opposite Mark Wahlberg in THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK

by     Posted 3 years, 71 days ago

David O. Russell is attached to several hundred projects, but by all accounts, his follow-up to The Fighter will be an adaptation of The Silver Linings Playbook.  Russell tapped frequent collaborator Mark Wahlberg to star as a delusional former high school history teacher: “Believing that he’s only been away for a few months instead of the four years he just spent in a mental institution, the teacher sets about wooing back his ex-wife.”  Angelina Jolie is reportedly in talks, presumably to play the ex-wife.  Russell tested several young actresses — including Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough, and Olivia Wilde — for a coveted role.  According to Deadline, Jennifer Lawrence bested the lot to become the frontrunner to star opposite Wahlberg as “an eccentric neighbor with problems of her own.”

Production on Silver Linings is slated for the fall, which gives Lawrence time to wrap The Hunger Games.  I’m going to see every movie starring Lawrence and every movie Russell directs in the near future.  If they do team up, I’ll have enough ticket money to see it twice!

Quasi-Casting Call: Jolie May Star in O. Russell’s THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK; Williams May Join HYDE PARK ON THE HUDSON

We have two stories that are almost casting news, but nothing has been confirmed for either film.  First up, Angelina Jolie hasn’t settled on her next acting project yet.  Her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey is set for December 23rd, she’s attached to star in Cleopatra, and Salt 2 recently got the greenlight.  Now Just Jared reports that Jolie is meeting with director David O. Russell to discuss his adaptation of The Silver Linings Playbook.  Mark Wahlberg is already attached to play at Pat Peoples, a former high school history teacher who has just been released from a mental institution and plans on reconciling with his estranged wife.  However, Pat believes he’s only been in the institution for a few months, when actually he’s been inside for several years.  Presumably, Jolie is interested in playing Peoples’ wife.  However, even if she takes the role, it’s unknown where it fall into her schedule.  Cleopatra and Salt 2 are both looking for directors.

Mark Wahlberg to Star in David O. Russell’s Adaptation of THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK

Filmmaker David O. Russell has had a wealth of projects to choose from since the success of The Fighter.  Now it looks like he’s finally zeroing on his next film as Vulture reports that Mark Wahlberg is set to reunite with O. Russell for The Silver Linings Playbook.  In December, we reported that O. Russell was circling the adaptation of Matthew Quick’s 2008 novel with possibly Bradley Cooper and Anne Hathaway to star presumably because Cooper and Hathaway are getting offered every role in Hollywood.  There’s no word on Hathaway’s current status in regards to the project, but Wahlberg will play “a delusional former high school history teacher who’s just been released into the custody of his mom. Believing that he’s only been away for a few months instead of the four years he just spent in a mental institution, the teacher sets about wooing back his ex-wife.”

So where does this leave O. Russell’s adaptation of the popular video game Uncharted?  Most likely on the backburner as Vulture reports that Playbook will probably be O. Russell’s next film.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.
