THEY CAME TOGETHER Blu-ray Review

When Wet Hot American Summer came out in 2001, it was released by USA Films – a company that eventually morphed into Focus Features, but at the time had no real footing theatrically.  That may explain why the film was barely released, but eventually found a cult audience.  Considering it was written by Michael Showalter and David Wain (the latter of whom directed the film), and featured many members of The State there was almost a guarantee it would be funny, but the fledging USA Films didn’t know how to sell it.  Originally Showalter and Wain wanted to follow that film with They Came Together, which they were unable to make until recently, and it was also given a small theatrical release (but was also put on VOD).  But now that it’s on home video, it seems likely it too will become a cult favorite.  Starring Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Cobie Smulders, Chris Meloni and many familiar faces, it is equally hilarious, and my They Came Together Blu-ray review follows after the jump.

Thanks to the greatness that is VOD, last night I was able to check out David Wain and Michael Showalter‘s rom-com parody, They Came Together. Starring Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd, the film looks to deconstruct the romantic comedy much like Wain and Showalter’s Wet Hot American Summer sought to satirize summer camp films. From the standpoint of ripping the often shallow and happenstance conceits of the modern rom-com to shreds, They Came Together is wildly successful. Poehler and Rudd are great and Wain and Showalter know the genre so well that the script often feels like a template for a Valentine’s Day release waiting to happen. While its constant barrage of meta can be distracting at times (a scene where Rudd drowns his sorrows at a bar specifically comes to mind), more often than not I found myself laughing too hard at the absurdity of the genre’s conventions to care. In only 83 minutes, They Came Together manages to satirize every bland romantic comedy you’ve seen in the last 15-20 years and tops it off with a Christopher Meloni sequence that may go down as my favorite toilet joke of all-time.

My VOD recommendation aside, this week’s Top 5 features interviews for and Matt’s review of Sex Tape, the first image from Avengers: Age of Ultron, Power Rangers movie news, The Purge: Anarchy interviews and review, and the first teaser trailer for New Line’s The Conjuring spinoff film Annabelle. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

Exclusive THEY CAME TOGETHER Clips: Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler Poke Fun at Rom-Coms

they-came-together-clips

Last weekend may have been consumed by Mark Wahlberg, Autobots, Dinobots and one too many Michael Bay low angle shots, but there was also a unique take on romantic comedies in the mix too, David Wain’s They Came Together.  It stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler as Joel and Molly.  While on a double date with Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper’s characters, Joel and Molly run through the history of their relationship, hitting an abundance of all-too-familiar rom-com troupes along the way.

They Came Together hit select theaters and On Demand on June 27th, so if you caught Matt’s review, you might have already checked it out, but if you’d like a taste of the type of comedy and tone Wain’s going for first, we got our hands on some exclusive material from the film that might help you out.  Hit the jump to check out seven They Came Together clips as well as some sound bites from Hader on the process of making the movie as well.

THEY CAME TOGETHER Review

they-came-together-slice

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.  They Came Together opens today in limited release and on VOD]

When director David Wain does his own thing, it may not be for everyone, but he’s also at his best. His more mainstream films, Role Models and Wanderlust, are entertaining, but his work on The State, Stella, and the classic Wet Hot American Summer is distinct, absurd, bold, and painfully funny. His latest, They Came Together, is Wain embracing his unique comic voice as he turns to mock one of Hollywood’s easiest targets, the romantic comedy. Despite the easily apparent flaws of that genre, Wain and co-writer Michael Showalter not only poke fun at the obvious tropes, but also let their delightfully twisted comedy burst through. Further supported by Paul Rudd brilliantly and brutally skewering his familiar leading man persona, They Came Together doesn’t bring the rom-com to its knees, but it does deliver a well-deserved gut punch.

Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler Describe Their “Corny Romantic Comedy Story” in New THEY CAME TOGETHER Clip

Lionsgate has released a new They Came Together clip from director David Wain’s (Role Models) upcoming romantic comedy parody.  The film is a twisted send-up of the traditional rom-com formula, as characters played by Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler recount their meet-cute story to a pair of friends (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper) over dinner.  This new clip comes from the beginning of the film, as Rudd and Poehler explain which romantic comedy stock characters they each fit while also revealing a third, more important character to the story of their coupling.  I caught the film at Sundance and it’s hilariously offbeat, bringing to mind the tone of Wain’s equally nutty comedy Wet Hot American Summer.  You should absolutely keep it on your radar this summer, and if you haven’t watched the trailer, I recommend you do so now.

Lionsgate has released the first They Came Together trailer for director David Wain’s (Wet Hot American Summer) unique romantic comedy.  The film is a twisted send-up of the traditional rom-com formula, as characters played by Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler recount their meet-cute story to a pair of friends (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper) over dinner.  I caught the film at Sundance and thought it was damn funny, and definitely in the vein of Wet Hot rather than Wain’s other movies.  This trailer does a good job of conveying the tone of the film without giving away some of the best jokes.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Ed Helms, Cobie Smulders, Christopher Meloni, Ken Marino, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Mantzoukas, and Max GreenfieldThey Came Together opens in theaters and on VOD on June 27th. We’re going to be seeing a lot of films at Sundance this year, but as any festivalgoer will tell you, you can’t see them all.  Scheduling complications always come into play, but it still stings that we’re going to miss David Wain‘s latest, They Came Together.  The rom-com send-up stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, and as you can see from the first clip, this is Wain operating in the absurd style of The State, Wet Hot American Summer, and Stella rather than his more traditional features like Role Models and Wanderlust.  Also, the poster will easily be one of the best of 2014, and I hope it gets used in the wide release.

Hit the jump to check out the poster and clip.  The film also stars Ed Helms, Cobie Smulders, Max Greenfield, and Christopher MeloniThey Came Together will make its world premiere at Sundance on January 24th.

First Photos of Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler on THEY CAME TOGETHER Set [Updated]

They Came Together has pretty much everyone you’d want for a comedy cast: Amy PoehlerPaul Rudd, Ed Helms, Michael Ian Black, Jason Mantzoukas, Cobie Smulders, Christopher Meloni, and more.  Plus, the romantic comedy parody was scripted by Wet Hot American Summer co-writers David Wain and Michael Showalter (with Wain directing), so I think we’re in for a treat.  They Came Together follows the budding relationship between Joel (Rudd) and Molly (Poehler) that starts off rocky when “his big corporation is the one that threatens to shut down her quirky knick-knack store.”  The movie will satirize all the rom-com tropes, so of course Poehler will be stuck in a wedding dress at one point, as seen the first batch of set photos.  And of course Michael Shannon will wield a sword!

Although he’s currently playing a big bad vampire on HBO’s True Blood, Christopher Meloni is now set to play a big, bad CEO in David Wain’s rom-com spoof, They Came Together. The picture reunites the Wet Hot American Summer director with stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. Poehler’s character runs a small knick-knack shop that is about to go out of business thanks to Rudd’s company.  THR reports that Meloni will star as Rudd’s boss, the CEO of CorporateCo Coporation and Co, Inc.  Written by Wain and Michael Showalter, the picture plans to wrap up casting and shoot this July.  They Came Together also stars Ed Helms, Michael Ian Black, Jason Mantzoukas, Cobie Smulders and Noureen DeWulf.

Wet Hot American Summer director, David Wain, is adding some heat to his rom-com spoof They Came Together by way of Cobie Smulders (The Avengers) and Noureen DeWulf (Ocean’s Thirteen).  Michael Ian Black joins the reunion of Wain, Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, as he too was part of 2001′s Wet Hot American Summer. The new film, which Wain calls “a spoof/homage/deconstruction/love letter to Romantic Comedies,” was also written by Wain and Michael Showalter, again pairing the former Wet Hot scribes.  Hit the jump to read more about They Came Together and less about Wet Hot American Summer.
