Weekend Box Office: THINK LIKE A MAN TOO on Top with $30 Million; JERSEY BOYS Remains in Fourth

Not much changed between Friday night and Sunday morning, at least in terms of box office position.  Sony is still on top with Think Like A Man Too, the sequel to 2012’s surprise hit.  The studio can also claim the second spot on the chart courtesy of 22 Jump Street, which held remarkably well considering its outsized debut last weekend.  How To Train Your Dragon 2 did not hold up quite as well, though it did stay ahead of new comer Jersey Boys.  Given the more modest expectations for director Clint Eastwood’s musical adaptation, however, that hardly counts as a victory for the DreamWorks sequel.

Title Weekend Total
1.  Think Like A Man Too $30,000,000 $30
2.  22 Jump Street $29,000,000 $111.4
3.  How to Train Your Dragon 2 $25,300,000 $95.1
4.  Jersey Boys $13,520,000 $13.5
5.  Maleficent $13,012,000 $185.9
6.  Edge of Tomorrow $10,340,000 $75.5
7.  The Fault in Our Stars $8,600,000 $98.7
8.  X-Men: Days of Future Past $6,200,000 $216.7
9.  Chef $1,845,000 $16.9
10.  Godzilla $1,820,000 $194.9

Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Meagan Good, and the Cast of THINK LIKE A MAN TOO Talk Sequels, Improvisation, and Filming in a Casino in Our Set Visit Interview

The ensemble comedy Think Like a Man, inspired by Steve Harvey’s best-selling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, was a huge hit, naturally leading to a sequel that will be bringing all of the couples back for a wedding in Las Vegas, when it hits theaters on June 20th, what was supposed to be a romantic weekend goes terribly awry when their various misadventures, and the bachelor and bachelorette parties, get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event.  Back on June 13, 2013, Collider was invited, along with a handful of other press, to visit the Caesars Palace Hotel & Casino set of Think Like a Man Too and chat with the cast and filmmakers.

One thing that was evident from the scenes that we watched on set was that the cast – Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Meagan Good, Regina Hall, Taraji P. Henson, Terrence J, Romany Malco, Gary Owen, Gabrielle Union and newest addition Wendi McLendon-Covey – was dedicated to making the sequel as funny as possible.  They improvised countless versions of lines, each getting a laugh from whoever was in earshot around the casino.  While there, I was able to participate in a small press conference with the cast, and you can check out what they had to say after the jump.

The very funny, heart-warming comedy Last Vegas stars four Academy Award-winning legends – Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline – as lifelong friends who decide to reunite and relive their glory days in Las Vegas when one of them decides to get married to a girl half his age.  As Archie (Freeman), Sam (Kline) and Paddy (DeNiro) try to convince Billy (Douglas) that he’s making a mistake, the four men quickly rediscover what made them such good friends, in the first place.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Jerry Ferrara (who plays obnoxious frat boy Dean) talked about why he wanted to be a part of this project, his first time meeting the guys at the table read of the script, being nervous about working with such legendary actors, and getting punch by Robert DeNiro.  He also talked about taking on boxer Arturo Gatti for a biopic that he’s already in training for, re-teaming with director Peter Berg for a role in Lone Survivor, and reprising his Think Like A Man character for the sequel, Think Like A Man Too.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Screen Gems Moving Forward with THINK LIKE A MAN Sequel

Though 2012 has already seen its fair share of box office hits, one of the bigger surprises was the April comedy Think Like a Man.  The film opened at number one at the box office with an impressive take of $33.6 million, ending the four-week run of The Hunger Games and besting new releases The Lucky One and Chimpanzee.  The pic went on to make over $91 million during its run, and now Screen Gems has officially announced that they’re moving forward with a sequel.

No story details are known, but Keith Merryman and David A. Newman will be returning to write the screenplay.  The first film was based on the best selling book by Steve Harvey and featured an ensemble cast dealing with relationships.  No release date has been set either, but expect Think Harder Like a Man to be in front of cameras sooner rather than later.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer for the first film and to check out the press release.

Friday Box Office – THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT Can’t Beat Holdovers THINK LIKE A MAN and THE LUCKY ONE on Seriously Slow Friday

by     Posted 2 years, 174 days ago

What a difference 12 months makes. On this weekend in 2011, summer started early when the surprise blockbuster Fast Five sped past $86 million on its debut run. And this year? Out of four new wide releases on Friday, not one could challenge last weekend’s number one comedy Think Like A Man. Hell, none of them could beat last weekend’s number two movie The Lucky One, for that matter. Best effort came from the Judd Apatow-produced The Five-Year Engagement, which debuted with an estimated $3.5 million from 2,936 locations or about half of what was expected. Sony’s animated Pirates! Band of Misfits made it into the top five with $2.8 million (and could climb higher if family audiences turn out on Saturday); but both Lionsgate’s Safe and Relativity’s The Raven had to settle for ‘also-ran’ status with $2.6 and $2.5 million, respectively. Overall, it looks like a pretty lifeless weekend, which only means that we’ll have much more hyperbole to work with when The Avengers – which is already breaking records overseas – hits next Friday.

Title Friday Total
1 Think Like A Man $5,500,000 $48.4
2 The Lucky One $3,900,000 $40.1
3 The Five-Year Engagement $3,500,000 $3.5
4 The Hunger Games $3,000,000 $372.4
5 Pirates! Band of Misfits $2,800,000 $2.8

After surprising us on Friday with its first-place debut, Think Like A Man has surprised again with its estimated $33 million haul from 2,015 locations.  That is the best per-screen average of the week (wide releases) and it nearly doubles expectations for the comedy. In second place, The Lucky One earned a solid $22.8 million and then there’s The Hunger Games… not sick of hearing about that one yet, are you?

Title Weekend Total
1 Walk Like a Man $33,000,000 $33
2 The Lucky One $22,805,000 $22.8
3 The Hunger Games $14,500,000 $356.9
4 Chimpanzee $10,205,000 $10.2
5 The Three Stooges $9,200,000 $29.3
6 Cabin in the Woods $7,750,000 $26.9
7 American Reunion $5,232,000 $48.2
8 Titanic 3D $5,000,000 $52.8
9 21 Jump Street $4,600,000 $127
10 Mirror, Mirror $4,114,000 $55.2

Friday Box Office – THE HUNGER GAMES Finally Falls; THINK LIKE A MAN and THE LUCKY ONE Open Strong in First and Second

by     Posted 2 years, 181 days ago

After a remarkable four weekends at number one, the reign of The Hunger Games is over.  But you probably saw that coming.  What seems a bit more surprising is the film that is taking its place at the top: Think Like A Man. Until a few days ago, the Sony/Screen Gems comedy looked like it would see a three-day opening in the mid-teens but, on Friday, it drew an estimated $12.2 million from 2,015 locations.  That should translate into a weekend close to $30 million for the Steve Harvey vehicle.  At number two on Friday, The Lucky One is also pulling in bigger-than-expected numbers, though it probably won’t challenge for first place, as was originally expected. The seventh feature from novelist Nicholas Sparks, The Lucky One earned an estimated $9.1 million from 3,155 locations for what should be $25 million by Sunday.  Finally, the latest doc from DisneyNature, Chimpanzee, opened in fourth on Friday with $3.5 million from 1,563 dates – a better start than either African Cats or Oceans… Full details and analysis tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 Think Like A Man $12,200,000 $12.2
2 The Lucky One $9,100,000 $9.1
3 The Hunger Games $4,000,000 $346.4
4 Chimpanzee $3,500,000 $3.5
5 Cabin in the Woods $2,500,000 $21.7

She also talked about what she thinks of the direction that her CBS drama series Person of Interest is taking and how she can’t wait to learn more about her character’s backstory, and going straight into shooting the feature film No Good Deed (the day after POI wraps for the season on April 23rd) with Idris Elba, in which she plays an ex-district attorney who gives up her life to be a stay-at-home mom, only to have a dangerous man show up at her door. Michael Ealy UNDERWORLD AWAKENING and THINK LIKE A MAN interview slice

With directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein’s Underworld: Awakening opening this weekend, I recently got to sit down with most of the cast to talk about making the movie.  Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene, “who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.”  Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley, and Charles Dance also star.

During my interview with Ealy we talked about how he got involved in the Underworld franchise, did he watch the previous films, was he disappointed to play a human character, deleted scenes, and how much changed between when he first got the script to being on set.  In addition, we also talked about video games, karaoke, the difference between acting on a TV show and in the movies, and what else he has coming up in 2012.  Hit the jump to watch.

The film adaptation of Steve Harvey’s best-selling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man has new names attached to star alongside Kevin Hart. According to Deadline, Jerry Ferrara, Romany Malco, Gary Owen, and Gabrielle Union are all now signed to the comedy project which sees Hart as a “relationship expert” who dishes out advice on love whilst struggling with his own failing marriage. (Move over Agony Aunts, Uncles are stepping up.) Unlike the long winded book title, the film is named simply, Think Like A Man and, as we reported last month, will be helmed by Fantastic Four director Tim Story and produced by Will Packer (Takers). Friends with Benefits writers Keith Merryman & David A. Newman have penned the script. Hit the jump for the synopsis of the book.
