The first U.S. trailer for the emo Nazi-hunter movie This Must Be the Place has been released. The film stars Sean Penn as an aging-rocker who becomes obsessed with pursuing the Nazi criminal who tormented his father in a concentration camp. The French trailer for the film showcased Penn’s strange performance, but this new trailer is just straight up bizarre. I’m not really sure what Penn’s going for, but he’s created one hell of an offbeat character. There are a couple laughs in the clip, but I honestly don’t know if this movie’s supposed to be a drama or a comedy. Then there’s that random Talking Heads cameo.

I’m still not sure what to make the goth Nazi-hunter dramedy This Must Be the Place. The reaction to the film at Cannes was bafflement and The Playlist thought “the film was pretty much like three different movies disjointedly mashed together.” Judging by the trailer, I can certainly see how that would be an issue. However, my greatest concern lies with Sean Penn who plays the lead role of Cheyenne, a former rock star who goes looking for a Nazi war criminal who tortured his father at Auschwitz. Penn’s delivery along with his hair and make-up screams at the viewer “I AM ACTING,” and the performance rings similar to his full-retard work from I Am Sam. In all fairness, The Playlist says the movie isn’t as bad as you’d expect, but my expectations at this point are for a total disaster.

Watching the first clip from the upcoming drama This Must Be the Place, I can’t help but think that star Sean Penn was re-watching I Am Sam and though to himself, “Yeah, I can top that.” So instead of going full-retard, Penn is going full old-rock-star parody. We’ve already seen his Robert Smith-inspired attire, but wait until you hear how Penn decides to deliver dialogue. It sounds like a cross between a nerdy teenager and present-day Ozzy Osbourne. It’s awful and I can’t tell if co-star Frances McDormand is embarrassed or just trying really hard not to laugh.
Oh, for those that don’t know about the plot, it’s about an aged rock star who decides to follow in his late father’s footsteps and become a Nazi hunter. I’m not making that up. Hit the jump to check out new images from the film along with the glorious clip. This Must Be the Place also stars newcomer Eve Hewson as a gothic-punk music fan who is close friends with Penn’s character, Cheyenne.

New images have been released for the Cannes selections This Must Be the Place starring Sean Penn and Miss Bala. This Must Be the Place follows an aging rock star (Penn) who picks up his father’s mission to hunt down a Nazi war criminal. As for Miss Bala, no synopsis has been supplied but we’ll provide one as soon as we get it. In the meantime, the image from the film leads me to believe that Miss Bala is a harrowing drama about a woman struggling to fix her car’s windshield.

Newcomer Eve Hewson is set to co-star with Sean Penn and Frances McDormand in Paolo Sorrentino’s indie drama This Must Be the Place. According to Variety, Place “centers on an aging rock star (Penn) who becomes fixated on pursuing the Nazi criminal who tormented his father in a concentration camp. Hewson will play a gothic-punk music fan who is close friends with Penn’s character.” Some rock stars fade away, some become sad reality stars, and some become Nazi hunters. It’s always one of those three.
Filming is set to begin this month in Ireland and the U.S. Hewson, who is also Bono’s daughter, recently starred in Erica Dunton’s indie drama The 27 Club.

We have three quick bites of casting news for you today. Production Weekly is tweeting that Robert De Niro may re-team with his We’re No Angels co-star Sean Penn for Paolo Sorrentino’s This Must Be the Place. PW is also reporting that Paul Rudd is circling the dramedy Better Living Through Chemistry and the dark comedy Horrible Bosses. Finally, Pajiba reports that Matt Damon and Keira Knightley have been offered the leads in the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night.
