Tilda-Swinton-Only-Lovers-Left-Alive-Snowpiercer-interview

With director Jim Jarmusch’s fantastic Only Lovers Left Alive opening this weekend in New York and Los Angeles, I recently landed an exclusive video interview with Tilda Swinton.  In the film, set against the backdrop of Detroit and Tangiers, Swinton and Tom Hiddleston play two vampires who have been in love for centuries.  As you can see in the trailer, Only Lovers Left Alive is loaded with great performances—not only Swinton and Hiddleston, but the rest of the cast including Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin, and Jeffrey Wright.  If you live in either city, I absolutely recommend seeking it out.  For more on the film, here’s Phil’s glowing review.

During the interview, Swinton talked about how she got involved in the project, how much changed during the making of the film, setting the film in Detroit and Tangiers, the way she likes to work, preparing for a role, Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

A new U.S. trailer for director Jim Jarmusch’s love story Only Lovers Left Alive, aka “the Tom Hiddleston vampire movie”, has been released online.  Hiddleston stars alongside Tilda Swinton as two vampires who have been in love for centuries.  This trailer certainly showcases an offbeat tone, but the film actually looks to be quite romantic and, surprisingly, funny.  As individuals who have been alive for a very, very long time, the principal characters have a unique outlook on life and culture and they aren’t afraid to share it.  This also looks to be a wonderful performance showcase for Hiddleston and Swinton.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL Review

By this point, you know whether or not you love the films of Wes Anderson.  He’s a true auteur with an unmistakable style, and unless he undergoes a radical transformation, his fans and his detractors will remain firmly entrenched.  His latest, The Grand Budapest Hotel, won’t change anyone’s mind about the director nor should it.  The movie is almost the platonic ideal of Wes Anderson picture, and yet it’s free from over-indulgence and self-congratulations.  The film is vibrant, witty, pristine, and a wonder to behold.  While it falls a bit short of the emotional impact of a couple of his other movies, Anderson has still crafted a captivating mixture of magic and melancholy.

First Trailer for Terry Gilliam’s THE ZERO THEOREM Starring Christoph Waltz

The first trailer for director Terry Gilliam’s upcoming film The Zero Theorem has been released online.  The pic stars Christoph Waltz as Qohen Leth, a computer hacker who searches for the meaning of life while being distracted by Management, a shadowy figure from an Orwellian corporation.  The film certainly looks to be a trip, as it feels like it’s wholly from the mind of Terry Gilliam.  Waltz appears to be going all out in his lead role, and he’s surrounded by a very colorful cast of characters sporting various wigs, accents, and futuristic clothes.  I’m very interested to see how this nutty story progresses.

Japanese Trailer for SNOWPIERCER Features Plenty of New Footage

The legend of Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer is beginning to eclipse the actual movie.  The story is set in a new ice age caused by a failed experiment to stop global warming that killed virtually all life on the planet.  The sole survivors live on a train called Snowpiercer—powered by a perpetual machine—who struggle with the class system implemented on the train.  Snowpiercer was a hit in Bong’s native South Korea, and it’s slowly rolling out to other territories.  However, behind-the-scenes wrangling continues between Bong and U.S. distributor The Weinstein Company.  Harvey Weinstein wants a shorter, more action-oriented cut, while Bong obviously wants to keep his cut intact.  The result is that we currently don’t know what we’ll get or when we’ll get it.  As we wait, new trailers continue to roll out, and a new one from Japan features plenty of fresh footage, and a heavy emphasis on the movie’s protagonist, Curtis (Chris Evans).

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Alison Pill, Ewen Bremner, Octavia Spencer, Kang-ho Song, and Ko AsungSnowpiercer opens in Japan on February 7th.  Let us know what we’re missing, Japan.

First Trailer for ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE Starring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston

The first trailer for writer-director Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive is now available.  The picture stars Tilda Swinton (Moonrise Kingdom) and Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) as Eve and Adam, two vampires who have been in love for centuries.  That basic plot description is a bit bland, so it comes as a nice surprise that this first look at the film is decidedly more emotionally complex and visually interesting.  Our own Phil Brown had a chance to see the film at TIFF 2013, so you can read up on his review here.

Also starring Mia Wasikowska (Stoker), John Hurt (Immortals), Jeffrey Wright (Boardwalk Empire), and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek Into Darkness), Only Lovers Left Alive debuts internationally early this December, but no domestic release date has been set just yet.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

French Trailer for SNOWPIERCER Starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and Alison Pill

A French trailer has been released for Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer, and it provides our best look at the movie yet.  The story is set in a new ice age caused by a failed experiment to stop global warming that killed virtually all life on the planet.  The sole survivors live on a train called Snowpiercer—powered by a perpetual machine—who struggle with the class system implemented on the train.  This trailer provides not only a clearer picture of the plot, but also tons of visual effects we haven’t seen before.  It also has Alison Pill firing an automatic weapon, so that’s fun too.  Overall, Snowpiercer looks like an exhilarating ride, but we’ll have to see if we get the original South Korean cut or a shorter, dumbed-down version The Weinstein Company wants for U.S. distribution.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Ewen Bremner, Octavia Spencer, Kang-ho Song, and Ko AsungSnowpiercer currently does not have a U.S. release date.  The film premiered in Bong’s native South Korea last month, and was a big hit at the box office.

TIFF 2013: ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE Review

The words “Jarmusch” and “vampires” were never supposed to be in the same sentence. Yet, somehow, here we are living in a world where the proto-hipster behind Down by Law and Coffee and Cigarettes has made a movie about bloodsuckers. Predictably, the movie is not a teen soap opera with fangs or a carnival of entrail-spewing carnage. Instead, it’s more of a listless, haunting, and darkly humorous experience that plays right into the director’s strengths and slips in a few genre thrills along the way for flavor. It just might even be the director’s finest film in years. Hit the jump to find out why.

3 Brief Featurettes for Bong Joon-ho’s SNOWPIERCER Starring Chris Evans, Kang-ho Song, and Tilda Swinton

South Korea has definitely taken a page from us when it comes to a marketing onslaught.  With Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer, it’s not too surprising when you consider that it’s the most expensive movie in the country’s history.  This marketing blitz has paid off with the movie breaking South Korea’s box office records.  Today, three mini-featurettes have found their way online, and they all highlight the action that Harvey Weinstein probably wants in his slimmed down, U.S. version of the movie.  The featurettes focus on the characters played Chris Evans, Kang-ho Song, and Tilda Swinton.  Kang-ho’s featurette isn’t translated to English, but it still contains some nice footage of his character.

Hit the jump to check out the featurettes, and click here for Steve’s interview with Evans where the actor talks about Weinstein’s controversial decision to cut twenty minutes from the movie.  The film also stars John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Ewen Bremner, Octavia Spencer, and Ko AsungSnowpiercer currently doesn’t have a U.S. release date.

New SNOWPIERCER Trailer Highlights Action of the Train and Axe Variety

Give me a futuristic science fiction premise and a stylish director, and I’m a happy moviegoer.  By the looks of it, Bong Joon-ho (The Host) delivers with Snowpiercer—and adds a nice cast to boot: Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Alison Pill, Ed Harris, Ewen Bremner, Octavia Spencer, Kang-ho Song, Ko Asung.

The story is set in a new ice age caused by a failed experiment to stop global warming that killed virtually all life on the planet.  The sole survivors live on a train called Snowpercer—powered by a perpetual machine—who struggle with the class system implemented on the train.  You’ll have to take my word on the story, because the brief 47-second clip—labeled “Final Trailer” in the week leading up to the August 1 release in South Korea—focuses more on speedy train rides through a snowy mountain landscape and Evans axing a few passengers than class politics.  Still looks great.  No word on the U.S. release date yet, so stay tuned.  Watch the trailer after the jump.
