Wow.  My head must have been buried in the sand because, aside from a few cursory glances at a poster here and there around the net, I had been more or less unfamiliar with the new Terry Gilliam film, The Zero Theorem. Not anymore.  This new U.S. trailer is fantastic. It’s utterly striking and unique and reminds us of what Gilliam is capable of.  I’m so relieved someone gave him some money to play around with again.

The Zero Theorem stars Christoph Waltz as Qohen Leth, a computer hacker who searches for the meaning of life while being distracted by Management, a shadowy figure from an Orwellian corporation; Melanie ThierryTilda Swinton, and David Thewlis also star.  The film hits iTunes on August 19th and limited theaters on September 19th. Tilda Swinton Talks SNOWPIERCER, Creating Her Outrageous Character, Playing a Character Originally Written as a Man & the Film’s International Production

tilda-swinton-snowpiercer-interview

From director Bong Joon Ho and adapted from the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige,” Snowpiercer tells the story of what happens after Earth has been frozen for 17 years, making the planet uninhabitable, and the few who are still alive are separated by class and now live aboard a train that perpetually circles the world.  When a young leader (Chris Evans) from the slum-like tail section decides to start a riot, his fellow passengers charge toward the engine located at the front of the train, where they seek to gain absolute authority.

At the film’s press day, actress Tilda Swinton (who plays the very memorable Minister Mason) talked about playing a character that was originally envisioned as a man, the process of creating such an outrageous character, how much freedom she had in putting together the look, why she wanted the teeth and nose, the experience of working on such an international production, and why she enjoys playing such visually dynamic characters.  She also talked about how she’s been shooting the comedy Trainwreck, directed by Judd Apatow and written by Amy Schumer, which is set to open in theaters in summer 2015.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.

I’m a week late to the game on this one but I’m going to share my thoughts on X-Men: Days of Future Past today nevertheless. While not on par with the excellent X-Men: First Class, I found DOFP to be a worthy follow-up that does an admirable job of bringing continuity to the movie tapestry while mercifully retconning X-Men: The Last Stand out of the discussion almost entirely. Also, for all of the cynicism I threw the film’s way over Quicksilver’s costume design, Evan Peters steals the show during his all too brief screen time. Without giving away too much to those who still haven’t caught the movie, his primary scene is the best that DOFP has to offer and tops Nightcrawler’s attack on the White House in X2 which is not praise that I heap lightly. While not without its flaws (the scenes set in the future are far less compelling than the story playing out in the past), DOFP is still a solid entry in the series that has me looking forward to X-Men: Apocalypse.

All DOFP reflections aside, this week’s Top 5 features our Maleficent interviews and review, Marvel’s ongoing search to find someone/anyone to direct Ant-Man following Edgar Wright‘s departure, the new trailer for Snowpiercer, Matt’s review of A Million Ways to Die in the West and an interview with Seth Macfarlane and Charlize Theron, and Nicolas Cage starring in the first trailer for the new Left Behind film because he can. Keep reading for brief recaps and links for all of the above.

Tilda-Swinton-Only-Lovers-Left-Alive-Snowpiercer-interview

With director Jim Jarmusch’s fantastic Only Lovers Left Alive opening this weekend in New York and Los Angeles, I recently landed an exclusive video interview with Tilda Swinton.  In the film, set against the backdrop of Detroit and Tangiers, Swinton and Tom Hiddleston play two vampires who have been in love for centuries.  As you can see in the trailer, Only Lovers Left Alive is loaded with great performances—not only Swinton and Hiddleston, but the rest of the cast including Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin, and Jeffrey Wright.  If you live in either city, I absolutely recommend seeking it out.  For more on the film, here’s Phil’s glowing review.

During the interview, Swinton talked about how she got involved in the project, how much changed during the making of the film, setting the film in Detroit and Tangiers, the way she likes to work, preparing for a role, Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

A new U.S. trailer for director Jim Jarmusch’s love story Only Lovers Left Alive, aka “the Tom Hiddleston vampire movie”, has been released online.  Hiddleston stars alongside Tilda Swinton as two vampires who have been in love for centuries.  This trailer certainly showcases an offbeat tone, but the film actually looks to be quite romantic and, surprisingly, funny.  As individuals who have been alive for a very, very long time, the principal characters have a unique outlook on life and culture and they aren’t afraid to share it.  This also looks to be a wonderful performance showcase for Hiddleston and Swinton.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL Review

By this point, you know whether or not you love the films of Wes Anderson.  He’s a true auteur with an unmistakable style, and unless he undergoes a radical transformation, his fans and his detractors will remain firmly entrenched.  His latest, The Grand Budapest Hotel, won’t change anyone’s mind about the director nor should it.  The movie is almost the platonic ideal of Wes Anderson picture, and yet it’s free from over-indulgence and self-congratulations.  The film is vibrant, witty, pristine, and a wonder to behold.  While it falls a bit short of the emotional impact of a couple of his other movies, Anderson has still crafted a captivating mixture of magic and melancholy.

First Trailer for Terry Gilliam’s THE ZERO THEOREM Starring Christoph Waltz

The first trailer for director Terry Gilliam’s upcoming film The Zero Theorem has been released online.  The pic stars Christoph Waltz as Qohen Leth, a computer hacker who searches for the meaning of life while being distracted by Management, a shadowy figure from an Orwellian corporation.  The film certainly looks to be a trip, as it feels like it’s wholly from the mind of Terry Gilliam.  Waltz appears to be going all out in his lead role, and he’s surrounded by a very colorful cast of characters sporting various wigs, accents, and futuristic clothes.  I’m very interested to see how this nutty story progresses.

Japanese Trailer for SNOWPIERCER Features Plenty of New Footage

The legend of Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer is beginning to eclipse the actual movie.  The story is set in a new ice age caused by a failed experiment to stop global warming that killed virtually all life on the planet.  The sole survivors live on a train called Snowpiercer—powered by a perpetual machine—who struggle with the class system implemented on the train.  Snowpiercer was a hit in Bong’s native South Korea, and it’s slowly rolling out to other territories.  However, behind-the-scenes wrangling continues between Bong and U.S. distributor The Weinstein Company.  Harvey Weinstein wants a shorter, more action-oriented cut, while Bong obviously wants to keep his cut intact.  The result is that we currently don’t know what we’ll get or when we’ll get it.  As we wait, new trailers continue to roll out, and a new one from Japan features plenty of fresh footage, and a heavy emphasis on the movie’s protagonist, Curtis (Chris Evans).

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Alison Pill, Ewen Bremner, Octavia Spencer, Kang-ho Song, and Ko AsungSnowpiercer opens in Japan on February 7th.  Let us know what we’re missing, Japan.

First Trailer for ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE Starring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston

The first trailer for writer-director Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive is now available.  The picture stars Tilda Swinton (Moonrise Kingdom) and Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) as Eve and Adam, two vampires who have been in love for centuries.  That basic plot description is a bit bland, so it comes as a nice surprise that this first look at the film is decidedly more emotionally complex and visually interesting.  Our own Phil Brown had a chance to see the film at TIFF 2013, so you can read up on his review here.

Also starring Mia Wasikowska (Stoker), John Hurt (Immortals), Jeffrey Wright (Boardwalk Empire), and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek Into Darkness), Only Lovers Left Alive debuts internationally early this December, but no domestic release date has been set just yet.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer.
