Last year, Mondo put together a fun little event for the 2012 Academy Awards: a few days prior to that Oscar Sunday, Mondo announced that a series of brand-new posters (all of which were based on that year’s Oscar-nominated films) would be dropping throughout the Academy’s broadcast. Everyone dug the idea, the whole thing went off without a hitch, and—most importantly—waiting on a drop gave all of us something to focus on whenever watching the Oscars became too much to bear.
And so, when the Mondo guys announced they’d be doing it all over again in 2013, we were pumped (as were many of you). But once that excitement died down, we were left wondering which of 2012’s Oscar-nominated films would get the Mondo treatment…and which of the rumors we’d been hearing would turn out to be true. Answers to those questions (and many more) await you after the jump, folks.

All week long, rumors have circulated about a “top-secret” event taking place in Los Angeles next weekend. We mentioned that an announcement was forthcoming back on Monday or Tuesday, and in the time since…well, lemme tell ya: you wouldn’t believe some of the crazy theories and rumors people emailed in to Limited Paper HQ. We heard “it’s a Banksy show”, that “it’s definitely a Hanksy show”, that it was an all-Olly-Moss joint, that an entire crew of artists were involved and that they’d all been forced to sign contracts preventing them from revealing anything about this mystery event prior to the official announcement. Somewhere in the middle of all that, Gallery1988’s Twitter feed promised that whatever was being planned would be a “game-changer”. What’s the truth? Find out after the jump.

Last week, BAFTA premiered special posters for their Best Picture nominees. Today, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences had followed suit by teaming up with Gallery1988 and various artists to create posters for this year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees. There are some impressive posters, and I’m curious to see if they’re going to go on sale at some point. The Academy’s website lists the dimensions and type of production (screen print), which leads me to believe that these might be available for purchase some day. I’m sure there are plenty of readers who would love to get their hands on Mark Englert‘s print for Django Unchained. [Update: Gallery1988 has tweeted the following: "G1988 x The Academy. Official. 2/14 - 2/17. More soon." so it looks like you should get your wallets ready, and keep an eye on their official website.]
Hit the jump to check out the posters. The Academy Awards will be held on February 24th at 7pm EST on ABC.

To those just joining the poster-collecting community (a nice way of saying, “For those who have recently contracted the crippling disease known as poster addiction”), 2012 must have seemed like a pretty cool year. But for those of us who’ve been at this game for longer than we’d care to admit, however, 2012 wasn’t just “pretty cool”: it was a year awash in amazing artwork, a twelve-month stretch that (if anything) provided too many choices for the kind of people who like covering their walls with movie-themed screenprints. There were so many great posters this year, in fact, that the idea of one person “ranking” them or “picking the best of the best” is—at best—foolhardy.
Which is why Limited Paper turned to a select group of poster enthusiasts—collectors, artists, and personalities within the poster-industry—to get a group vote going on the matter. We came up with our picks for the 20 best posters of the year, the first half of which can be found after the jump.

When Mondo announces a new series, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be focusing solely on that series until it wraps. Instead, Mondo seems to like keeping us on our toes by having about half a dozen different series in play at any given time. Some of ‘em wrap quickly, while others keep going for quite a while. Take their Looney Tunes series: Tom Whalen kicked off that license with a Duck Dodgers print all the way back in March (at the opening of the Mondo Gallery).
He’s handled each of the Looney Tunes print that followed, and most expected him to see the series through to its conclusion. But today Mondo announced something surprising: not only are they dropping two new Looney Tunes posters tomorrow…but neither of them was created by Tom Whalen. Surprised? Wanna see who is handling the next two prints in this series? Meet me after the jump, folks.

We’ve just about made it to Mondo’s Universal Monsters gallery show—their biggest show ever, opening this Friday and playing home to nearly 20 posters and 50-plus originals (according to Mondo’s creative director, Justin Ishmael, at tonight’s 3D screening of Creature From The Black Lagoon)—but that doesn’t mean all of Mondo’s other business has been put on hold. In fact, they’re going to be dropping the remaining prints from their recent New York Comic-Con appearance tomorrow morning. Wanna know what’s going on sale, what it’ll cost you, and what it looks like? Meet me after the jump, folks.

If you’re a Mondo fan and headed to New York Comic-Con this weekend, I strongly advise you to get to the con when it opens Friday morning at 9:30am. That’s because even though most assumed Mondo would release their prints like they did in San Diego (one at a time), I’ve learned that when the doors open, everything is for sale!
But it gets better.
Late tonight, as the convention was closing, I was able to take pictures of everything at the Mondo booth! If you’ve been wondering what would be sold at NYCC, Mondo has prints for Shaun of the Dead, Lord of the Rings, The Iron Giant, Phantasm, City of the Living Dead, Kill Bill, The Foghorn Leghorn, and Friday the 13th Part III 3D! In addition, a number of these prints have variants. Hit the jump for a ton of images and artists info.

As you’re probably already aware, the New York City Comic-Con is just around the corner (it runs October 11th-14th). We’ve known for some time now that Mondo would have a presence at this year’s NYCC, but they’re not the only ones dropping new stuff during this year’s NY-based gathering of the geeks: our friends over at Acid-Free Gallery (they’re the guys that released that Myths and Monsters series not too long ago) are also scheduled to unleash new prints during the event…and from the looks of things, we’re guessing they’re going to sell quick.
Want to see some of the brand-new Tom Whalen and Dave Perillo posters Acid-Free’s dropping during NYCC 2012, including a new reveal you’ll only find here at Limited Paper? Of course you do. Meet me after the jump, folks.

We’ve got quite a bit to get to in today’s Limited Paper, folks, and with Fantastic Fest 2012 still in full-swing, we don’t have a lot of time to get through it. In today’s writeup, we chat with frequent Mondo artist Tom Whalen (who has a brand-new, 80’s-themed gallery show co-headlined by Dave Perillo opening this Friday); we tell you when you can expect to learn and see more of Tyler Stout’s line of Mondo t-shirts (yup: incoming Stout interview!); and we take a look at all the Fantastic Fest posters Mondo is preparing to drop online tomorrow afternoon.
Yes, today’s Limited Paper is a spring-loaded, jam-packed, all-singing, all-dancing, primed-to-explode-directly-into-your-terrified-face extravaganza of awesome. See it all after the jump, folks.

Believe it or not, but with everything else that’s been going on lately—Gallery1988’s Breaking Bad series (and that crazy gallery show), Ltd. Art Gallery’s PRESS START exhibition, Bottleneck Gallery’s More Than You Imagined, Mark Englert’s new stuff, and everything else we’ve covered over the past couple weeks—it’s actually been quite a while since we checked in with the Mondo guys. And as it turns out, today’s a perfect day to do just that: not only is the Austin-based dropping two new posters from Kevin Tong and Tom Whalen this afternoon, but they’ve also just issued a formal announcement about their latest gallery show. Wanna know more? Of course you do. Meet me after the jump.

What’s been going on this week in the world of limited-edition screenprints and posters? Plenty. In today’s edition of Limited Paper, we dig up some exclusive details on a top-secret print from Mark Englert (one that oughtta make sci-fi nerds extremely happy), give you the rundown on a brand-new print from Mondo and Tom Whalen (based on Universal’s ParaNorman), and discuss Todd Slater’s entry in Gallery1988’s long-running Breaking Bad series. It’s a packed edition of Limited Paper, and it’s all waiting for you after the jump, folks…

Comic-Con 2012 sounds like one of the most massively exciting, probably-chaotic, and assuredly-fragrant gatherings of film geeks, comic nerds, and costumed weirdoes ever assembled. People from all over the globe are converging on San Diego this Wednesday, and—for the first time ever—your humble Limited Paper scribe has given in and consented to join that undulating mass of geekery. But it ain’t because Arnold Schwarzenegger’s gonna be there, and it ain’t because Django Unchained footage is screening. It ain’t even because Peter Jackson’s got Hobbit stuff to share. No, I’m going for the limited paper…and if you’ll meet me after the jump, I’ll tell you (just about) everything I know about what the poster-collecting community can expect from Comic-Con 2012 which includes Olly Moss, Daniel Danger, Tom Whalen, Dave Perillo and more.

As you’ve probably noticed, movie-poster collecting has turned into a Ron Burgundy-sized “Big Deal” over the past few years: everywhere you look, brilliantly talented artists like Martin Ansin, Tyler Stout, and Olly Moss are joining forces with places like Gallery 1988, IAm8Bit, and the newly-opened Mondo Gallery to create collectible, gorgeously-rendered works of art based on your favorite movies and TV shows, and every time one of these posters drops…a poster-collector is born.
And where do we–the die-hard paper-geeks of the world– go for our news? For our drop announcements? For interviews with our favorite artists? For reckless rumor-mongering about upcoming events? One or two dark corners of the internet might traffic in the kind of information collectors crave, but we think we can streamline that process a bit (and even if we fail, it is an excuse to ramble on about posters for the umpteenth time, and we never get tired of that). Wanna see what we’ve put together? Check out Limited Paper #1 after the jump, folks.

We’re big fans of Mondo—the collectible boutique arm of the legendary Alamo Drafthouse—here at Collider. They commission and make available gorgeous works of art inspired by movies small and large, commercial and cult hits. This past weekend Mondo opened their first ever gallery in Austin, TX, right in the middle of the SXSW Film Festival. The gallery opening was a huge success, and I’m incredibly jealous as both Steve and Matt got a chance to attend and take a gander. For those of us not lucky enough to make the trip, Mondo has made available images of some of the prints they had on display for their inaugural sci-fi show. They include stunning works including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, A Trip to the Moon, War of the Worlds and more.
Hit the jump to take a look at some of the prints on display.

“Well…shit.” That’s the only reaction I can muster to the announcement that Mondo will be whipping up posters for Pixar’s films. I can only say “Well…shit,” because I know how fast these posters are going to sell out (unless they do one for Cars 2; then it should be easier than usual to get one). I’ll just sit at my computer crying angry tears because I couldn’t get the poster for WALL-E or Finding Nemo or Up. Damn you, Mondo. Can’t you do posters for movies I don’t care about? Like a director’s series for Shawn Levy? C’mon, a Cheaper by the Dozen poster? That would be…a thing. Oh, and this Pixar news comes on the heels of Mondo’s announcement that they’re also doing a series for Jurassic Park.
Anyway, the first poster in the Pixar series will be a Monsters, Inc. screenprint by Mondo fave Tom Whalen. It, unsurprisingly, looks terrific. The print measures 18″x24″, costs $45, and is limited to an edition of 365. The poster goes on sale tomorrow, September 2nd at a random time. Be sure you’re following @MondoNews for the official announcement. Hit the jump to check out the full poster and then try not to curse too loudly.
