If anybody can crack the curse of video game adaptations, it’s Duncan Jones.  The filmmaker behind Moon and Source Code has been very busy crafting a feature film adaptation of the incredibly popular World of Warcraft, and while filming is complete, Jones has a lengthy post-production process ahead of him.  Nevertheless, Jones and Legendary/Universal weren’t going to completely forsake fans at the WoW convention BlizzCon, and today during the film’s panel, the Warcraft movie characters were revealed along with the first posters for the film.  Leading The Alliance is Travis Fimmel as Anduin Lothar, a war hero who sacrificed everything to keep the people of Azeroth safe.  He is joined by Dominic Cooper’s King Llane Wrynn, the leader of the Alliance city of Stormwind, as well as the mysterious Medivh (Ben Foster) and Garona (Paula Patton), a survivor caught between the Alliance and the Horde.

And what of The Horde?  Hit the jump to see the full character breakdowns for Warcraft, which includes some very familiar names to fans of the game as well as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes standout Toby Kebbel (aka Koba).  Warcraft is slated for release in 3D on March 11, 2016.

While no deals are currently in place, Legendary Entertainment is keen on making Travis Fimmel (Vikings) one of the four leads in their Warcraft feature.  Duncan Jones (Moon) is directing the Blizzard Entertainment videogame adaptation that also has Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) in talks to co-star; Colin Farrell (Seven Psychopaths) also has a deal in the works, but it isn’t finalized.  Scripted by Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond), details on Warcraft’s plot and characters are being kept under wraps, though the picture has nearly 20 years of gaming history to choose from.  Hit the jump for more.

Duncan Jones‘ fantasy adaptation Warcraft is gearing up to begin production in January, so the casting process is underway.  Yesterday, we reported that Colin Farrell had been offered a lead role, and Paula Patton was in negotiations.  Deadline has now updated their story to report that the production is also looking at Paul Dano (Prisoners), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Travis Fimmel (History Channel’s Vikings), and Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels) for roles.  There are no details on who they might play, or if they’re each being offered a different role.

Given their looks and star power, I could see Dano and Yelchin competing for the same role, and Fimmel and Mount competing for another role.  Dano and Yelchin are both skinny, around the same height, and are known mostly for their supporting work.  Fimmel and Mount are the rugged, leading men from their respective TV shows.  We’ll see how it all comes together in the weeks ahead.

vikings-season-2

History has a scored a few big ratings hits this season, and though its first scripted drama Vikings has not even finished its inaugural run, the cable network has already renewed it for a 10-episode second season.  According to the network, Vikings has been the #1 new cable series in 2013 in terms of viewership, even in its competitive Sunday night slot, averaging around five million viewers.  I reviewed the series as it first aired and found it compelling, especially in the weeks before another gritty period drama, Game of Thrones, returned — although Vikings certainly has its own merits.  Hit the jump for more.

The first trailer has jumped online for Billy Bob Thornton-starrer, The Baytown Disco.  A self-professed “Southern-fried whip-ass extravaganza,” The Baytown Disco features a trio of ruthless outlaw brothers who fall into helping a damsel in distress (Eva Longoria).  She hires them to help return her godson (Thomas Brodie Sangster), who has been kidnapped by her nefarious ex-husband, Rob (Thornton).  While I wasn’t exactly sold on the synopsis and images alone, the new trailer hits all the right banjo strings (and the femme fatales certainly do not hurt).  Directed by Barry Battles, The Baytown Disco also stars Clayne Crawford, Michael Rapaport, Daniel Cudmore, Travis Fimmel, Andre Braugher and Paul Wesley. Hit the jump for the trailer and official synopsis, and to watch the original short that inspired the feature-length film.
