Joseph Kosinski Talks OBLIVION Blu-ray, the Music Only Version of the Film, the Next TRON Sequel, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 136 days ago

Out this week on Blu-ray is Oblivion.  The sci-fi spectacle stars Tom Cruise as Jack, a drone repairman stationed on the abandoned remains of earth.  With the planet destroyed by a war with the alien “Scavs” Jack is assigned to the surface with a mission to extract vital resources that fuel the new human colony.  And his mission is almost complete, but a crashed ship soon uncovers a truth that calls into question everything he believes, and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.  Oblivion also stars Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo.

In celebration of Oblivion’s Blu-ray release I recently sat down with director Joseph Kosinski for an interview on the Universal Studios lot.  He talked about what he took away from working on the project for so many years, having the opportunity to tweak the film for the Blu-ray, the music only version of the film, the difference between adapting an existing work and directing an original script, and working with the designers to create the look of the film.  He also gave a brief update on the status of the next Tron sequel.  Hit the jump to watch.

Director Joseph Kosinski Talks TRON 3; Two Weeks Away from Draft With “Much Broader Appeal,” Still Working on Title

With WonderCon happening this weekend, Universal brought out director Joseph Kosinski to talk to a few press outlets about his sci-fi action-adventure flick Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman, and out in theaters on April 19th.  While we will run the full interview soon, we wanted to share what the filmmaker had to say about a third TRON film today.

Expanding on what he already told us in an interview back in December 2012, Kosinski said that it absolutely feels like Disney wants to make it happen, that he’s two weeks away from getting a draft of the script, that they’ve been working on this story since 2009, and that the story will open up the world and give it a much broader appeal.  He also said that the movie will have a title that is not just TRON 3, but that it’s not officially set in stone yet.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Exclusive: TRON 3 Update from Director Joseph Kosinski; Talks Daft Punk’s Return, TRON 3′s Time Period, EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Comparisons, and More

by     Posted 2 years, 4 days ago

Tron fans had reason to rejoice a little over a week ago when we reported that Disney is now moving forward with a sequel to 2010’s TRON: Legacy.  The follow-up has been in development since that film’s release, but new Disney Studios head Alan Horn sees Tron 3 as a priority, and so Jesse Wigutow has been brought on to pen the latest draft of the script in order to get things moving.  Legacy star Garrett Hedlund recently confirmed his inevitable involvement in the pic, but details regarding the sequel have been few and far between.

Steve recently participated in an exclusive interview with Legacy director Joseph Kosinski in anticipation for his upcoming sci-fi film Oblivion, and he kindly provided a lengthy update on Tron 3, which he intends to direct.  Kosinski talked about the status of the script, the fact that this had to be their Empire Strikes Back in order for him to return, the possibility of Daft Punk once again providing the score, how much time has passed when Tron 3 picks up, and much more.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Obviously: Garrett Hedlund Confirms He’s Returning for TRON 3

by     Posted 2 years, 5 days ago

Just last week, we learned that the in-development sequel to TRON: Legacy has been given a boost, as Disney is keen on moving forward with the project with Jesse Wigutow tapped to pen the latest draft of the script.  Now, in “no shit” news, Legacy star Garrett Hedlund has confirmed in an interview with NextMovie that he’s set to return for the Joseph Kosinski-helmed follow-up:

“Yeah, are we gonna break this now? Disney’s very excited. That’s about that. You know, yeah, I’m very excited, Disney’s very excited.”

With all big studio projects that have franchise potential, actors are signed to multi-picture deals in which they are contractually obligated to return for further sequels whether they want to or not, so obviously if Disney is moving ahead with Tron 3 it will be with Hedlund in tow.  You can also expect Olivia Wilde to be coming back, as the ending of Legacy set up a nice tease for the future of the two characters.  New Disney Studios head Alan Horn sees the Legacy sequel as a priority for the Mouse House, so expect more news on the sequel sooner rather than later.

Bruce Boxleitner Talks TRON: UPRISING, the Longevity of TRON and His Career with the Character of Tron

by     Posted 2 years, 205 days ago

The animated series TRON: Uprising, premiering on Disney XD on June 7th, takes place after the 1982 feature film and before the events in TRON: Legacy. Produced in CG animation with a 2D aesthetic, the series follows the heroic journey of a new character named Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood), a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid.  You can watch the first episode here.

At a press day for the show, TRON universe veteran Bruce Boxleitner – who reprises his role as Tron, once the greatest warrior of the system but now just a scarred man who sees potential in Beck to become his successor – talked about how surprised he is that TRON has sustained for so many years, what made an animated series the logical next step, and why he’s decided to stick with the Tron character all this time.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

TRON 3 Update from TRON: LEGACY Screenwriters Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis

by     Posted 2 years, 274 days ago

Before Joseph Kosinski‘s TRON Legacy even opened, Disney was preparing for a sequel in the event that the movie was a smash hit.  Instead, TRON Legacy opened to mixed reviews and middling box office.  It wasn’t a flop, but it wasn’t the success Disney wanted based on the amount of marketing they had poured into it.  However, Legacy reportedly moved enough DVDs and merchandise (where the real money is made) to keep a sequel in the cards.  There’s also the upcoming TRON Uprising animated series, which could influence whether or not the sequel gets a greenlight.  However, all has been quiet on TRON 3 since June 2011 when Disney hired Dave DiGilio to write the script.

TRON Legacy screenwriters Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have now moved on to run the hit ABC series Once Upon a Time, but they’ve remained co-producers on TRON 3.  Hit the jump for what they had to say about the sequel’s current status.

Bradley Cooper and Co-Director Brian Klugman Talk THE WORDS, TRON: LEGACY, PARADISE LOST, THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, and More at Sundance

by     Posted 2 years, 319 days ago

One of the best films I saw at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was writer-director Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal‘s first feature, The Words. The film stars Bradley Cooper as a writer who, after discovering an extraordinary lost manuscript, passes the work off as his own and receives overwhelming critical acclaim.  Jeremy Irons plays the man who originally wrote the manuscript, and the film weaves multiple narratives to tell the story.  The Words also stars Zoe Saldana, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde, Ben Barnes, and JK Simmons.  CBS Films bought the film after its first screening and they plan to release it later this year.  It’s definitely a film you should be excited to see.  For more on The Words, here’s Matt’s review.

Shortly after seeing the film, I did an extended interview with Bradley Cooper and co-writer-director Brian Klugman.  We talked about being at Sundance, how the project came together and how it changed along the way, deleted scenes, how the two of them became friends (they’ve known each other for decades), karaoke, film versus digital, and a lot more.  In addition, Klugman talked about his early draft of Tron: Legacy, and Cooper talked about what it was like to work on director Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines, and the status of Paradise Lost (it’s hopefully filming this June).  Hit the jump to watch.

New Details on Disney XD’s TRON: UPRISING and ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Animated Series

by     Posted 2 years, 344 days ago

When the Walt Disney Company and Marvel announced their joint partnership a few years ago, both sides knew that there were some incredible creative opportunities and a whole lot of coin to be made in the years ahead. That more or less sums up what the Disney Channels’ President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh said during a presentation at TCA. While I’m paraphrasing, of course, Marsh did go on to announce the next step in their partnership: a block of Marvel-themed series on Disney XD which will be called Marvel Universe, featuring a new collaboration, Ultimate Spider-Man. The new iteration will be the first time that Spidey, voiced by Drake Bell (Superhero Movie), won’t be going it along, as he’ll be joined by White Tiger, Iron Fist, Power Man and Nova, all of Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. While that’s good news for fans of the web-head, Marsh also talked about the premiere of their anticipated animated series, TRON: Uprising. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

New Writer Hired to Pen Sequel to TRON: LEGACY

by     Posted 3 years, 195 days ago

While rumors of a sequel to last year’s Tron: Legacy have permeated ever since that film’s release, it looks like Disney may finally be moving forward with a follow-up. Though Tron: Legacy did over $400 million, it was a very expensive flick (with a very expensive marketing campaign) and that amount wasn’t exactly the home run the Mouse House was looking for, so they’ve taken their time in deciding whether to move forward or not. Well now, Heat Vision reports that David DiGilio (Eight Below) has been tapped to start writing a sequel to Legacy. That film’s writers, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, were expected to return if a follow-up came to fruition, but apparently they’ve been sidetracked by their ABC fairy tale series debuting on ABC this fall, Once Upon a Time.

Tron: Legacy set up a possible villain for a sequel with its cameo appearance by Cillian Murphy as the son of corrupt ENCOM CEO Ed Dillinger, played by David Warner in the original Tron. Furthermore, the DVD of Legacy included an epilogue-ish clip of Dillinger conspiring with his father, hinting at even more evilness to come! Hit the jump for more.

TRON: LEGACY/TRON 5-Disc Blu-ray Collector’s Set Review

by     Posted 3 years, 260 days ago

When Tron: Legacy was announced, fans of the 1982 original were dumbfounded: nearly thirty years after the fact, Disney was putting together a sequel.  Furthermore, they’d somehow convinced Jeff Bridges– star of the original Tron– to reprise his role as Kevin Flynn, Encom’s whiz-kid CEO.  That (and the sizzle reel the studio unveiled at Comic-Con a few years ago) indicated that Disney was taking this sequel very seriously: Joseph Kosinski’s Tron: Legacy promised to look, feel, and behave a lot like the original Tron… but with all the cutting-edge special effects and 3D that weren’t available back in the early 80′s.  After poking through the 5-disc Blu-ray set that Disney’s put together for Kosinski’s film, it’s clear that they’re interested in turning Tron into their next, big, Pirates of The Caribbean-sized franchise… but will another Tron sequel, an animated Tron TV show, and an onslaught of Tron merchandise catch on in the way that Disney’s clearly hoping it will?  Y’know, I think it’s got a shot.  Read on for our full review of the 5-disc Tron: Legacy Blu-ray collector’s set, after the jump.

New TRON: LEGACY DVD Easter Egg Hint at Villains for Possible Sequel

by     Posted 3 years, 266 days ago

We heard in January that Disney filmed additional material specifically for the DVD/Blu-ray release of Tron: Legacy.  The official release is scheduled for April 5, but we sneaked a peak earlier this month with a leaked 10-minute clip of new footage, “Tron: The Next Day.”  That clip has since been taken down, but the resilient Youtube poster has uploaded a second clip from the DVD.

Though shorter (and less titled) than “Tron: The Next Day,” the new clip has even deeper implications on a possible Tron 3: it features a text conversation between the villainous Father and Son Dillinger that suggest the closing moments of “The Next Day” are just “a minor bump in the road” to their evil plan.  Watch it (while it’s still up) after the jump.

Watch TRON: THE NEXT DAY, a Clip of New Footage from the TRON: LEGACY Blu-ray/DVD

by     Posted 3 years, 282 days ago

We know that Disney filmed additional footage specifically for the DVD/Blu-ray release of Tron: Legacy, but the nature and intent was in some doubt.  It was first reported there might be a teaser trailer for Tron 3, but that appears untrue.  (Another Tron sequel still hasn’t been greenlit, mind you — though it’s close.)  Some of this footage has surfaced online as a 10:27 clip  titled “Tron: The Next Day.”  The focus is bridging the decades between the two Tron films, and the story ties heavily into the “Flynn Lives” viral campaign before Tron: Legacy‘s release.  Garrett Hedlund, Bruce Boxleitner, and Dan Shor make appearances.

The current over/under on this leaked clip is about four hours, and I’m betting on the under.  So watch “Tron: The Next Day” while you still can after the jump.
