Out this week on Blu-ray is Oblivion.  The sci-fi spectacle stars Tom Cruise as Jack, a drone repairman stationed on the abandoned remains of earth.  With the planet destroyed by a war with the alien “Scavs” Jack is assigned to the surface with a mission to extract vital resources that fuel the new human colony.  And his mission is almost complete, but a crashed ship soon uncovers a truth that calls into question everything he believes, and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.  Oblivion also stars Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo.

In celebration of Oblivion’s Blu-ray release I recently sat down with director Joseph Kosinski for an interview on the Universal Studios lot.  He talked about what he took away from working on the project for so many years, having the opportunity to tweak the film for the Blu-ray, the music only version of the film, the difference between adapting an existing work and directing an original script, and working with the designers to create the look of the film.  He also gave a brief update on the status of the next Tron sequel.  Hit the jump to watch.

At WonderCon, Universal brought out director Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy) to talk to a few press outlets about his sci-fi action-adventure flick Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman, and out in theaters on April 19th.  The original tale tells the story of Jack Harper (Cruise), a veteran assigned to extract Earth’s remaining resources, after its surface is devastated from decades of war with the alien Scavs, who begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.  The film also stars Olga Kurylenko, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo and Andrea Riseborough.

During this roundtable interview, filmmaker Joseph Kosinski talked about the lessons he learned from making both TRON: Legacy and Oblivion, how Oblivion has 800 visual effects compared to 1,500 for TRON: Legacy, that he’s been thinking about this world for eight years now, the elements of sci-fi that he wanted to bring into the story, that Oblivion in IMAX will be full frame for the entire film, the input that both Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman gave, why he wants to keep exactly what the Scavs are somewhat vague, including an homage to Top Gun, that his favorite format to see the film in is digital IMAX but he also thinks it’s worth checking out in Dolby Atmos (they’re the first film to have mixed in Atmos from scratch), how the film would have been different if he’d made it at Disney like originally planned, and his plans for the Oblivion illustrated novel.  He also gave an update about how things are progressing with TRON 3, and said that he has a few different scripts currently in development.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

With WonderCon happening this weekend, Universal brought out director Joseph Kosinski to talk to a few press outlets about his sci-fi action-adventure flick Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman, and out in theaters on April 19th.  While we will run the full interview soon, we wanted to share what the filmmaker had to say about a third TRON film today.

Expanding on what he already told us in an interview back in December 2012, Kosinski said that it absolutely feels like Disney wants to make it happen, that he’s two weeks away from getting a draft of the script, that they’ve been working on this story since 2009, and that the story will open up the world and give it a much broader appeal.  He also said that the movie will have a title that is not just TRON 3, but that it’s not officially set in stone yet.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Tron fans had reason to rejoice a little over a week ago when we reported that Disney is now moving forward with a sequel to 2010’s TRON: Legacy.  The follow-up has been in development since that film’s release, but new Disney Studios head Alan Horn sees Tron 3 as a priority, and so Jesse Wigutow has been brought on to pen the latest draft of the script in order to get things moving.  Legacy star Garrett Hedlund recently confirmed his inevitable involvement in the pic, but details regarding the sequel have been few and far between.

Steve recently participated in an exclusive interview with Legacy director Joseph Kosinski in anticipation for his upcoming sci-fi film Oblivion, and he kindly provided a lengthy update on Tron 3, which he intends to direct.  Kosinski talked about the status of the script, the fact that this had to be their Empire Strikes Back in order for him to return, the possibility of Daft Punk once again providing the score, how much time has passed when Tron 3 picks up, and much more.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Obviously: Garrett Hedlund Confirms He’s Returning for TRON 3

Just last week, we learned that the in-development sequel to TRON: Legacy has been given a boost, as Disney is keen on moving forward with the project with Jesse Wigutow tapped to pen the latest draft of the script.  Now, in “no shit” news, Legacy star Garrett Hedlund has confirmed in an interview with NextMovie that he’s set to return for the Joseph Kosinski-helmed follow-up:

“Yeah, are we gonna break this now? Disney’s very excited. That’s about that. You know, yeah, I’m very excited, Disney’s very excited.”

With all big studio projects that have franchise potential, actors are signed to multi-picture deals in which they are contractually obligated to return for further sequels whether they want to or not, so obviously if Disney is moving ahead with Tron 3 it will be with Hedlund in tow.  You can also expect Olivia Wilde to be coming back, as the ending of Legacy set up a nice tease for the future of the two characters.  New Disney Studios head Alan Horn sees the Legacy sequel as a priority for the Mouse House, so expect more news on the sequel sooner rather than later.

TRON: LEGACY Sequel Moving Forward with New Screenwriter

The sequel to Tron: Legacy looks to be back on track.  Disney has been developing a follow-up to the 2010 Tron sequel for a couple of years now, though movement had slowed considerably as of late.  Apparently new Disney Studios head Alan Horn sees the sequel as a priority, with Heat Vision reporting that Jesse Wigutow being tapped to pen the latest draft of the script as development on the project moves forward “with a renewed urgency.”  Legacy director Joseph Kosinski is set to helm this next installment, though a timetable for production isn’t given.  Kosinski is currently finishing up post-production on the Tom Cruise-led sci-fi pic Oblivion.

Last we heard, David DiGilio was writing a new draft of the script for Tron 3Legacy screenwriters Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz stepped back to a producer role on the follow-up given their commitment to the ABC series Once Upon a Time, which they created and run.  With this “renewed urgency” on the project, we should hear more about the sequel sooner rather than later.

TRON: UPRISING Producers and Cast Talk Fan Reaction, Science Fiction Influences, and Returning to the Grid at Comic-Con

by     Posted 2 years, 124 days ago

tron-uprising-comic-con-slice The original Tron, though groundbreaking, played to a less than box office smashing success.  In the years since, a loyal and oft times vocal fan base has seen their beloved property pass through many different hands and into many different forms since the original film appeared.  When Tron: Legacy hit Comic Con International a few years ago, the buzz surrounding the film included the announcement of a cartoon series called Tron: Uprising.   This year, Disney XD came to Comic Con in force to create buzz for the new series with a panel and press day.

Producers Charlie Bean, Edward Kitsis, and Adam Horowitz, cast members Tricia Helfer (Voice of The Grid) and Bruce Boxleitner (Voice of Tron) and Art Director Alberto Mielgo spoke to Collider in one on one video interviews.  They had plenty to say about Tron in all it’s forms, the fans, and what to expect from the new series that bridges the gap between the original Tron and Tron:Legacy.  Check out all the video interviews after the jump.

One of my most anticipated movies of 2012 is Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph.  Directed by Rich Moore, the story follows a bad-guy character in a Donkey Kong-like arcade game, who longs to be a hero, but brings trouble to his entire arcade after sneaking into a new first-person shooter game and unleashing a deadly enemy. John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, and Alan Tudyk are the voice cast.  For more on the film, here’s the first trailer, our recap of the Comic-Con panel and interview with Reilly, Silverman and Moore.

The day after the film’s Comic-Con panel I got to sit down with Moore for an extended interview.  We talked about Comic-Con, if Tron will be in the movie, what kind of Easter Eggs video game fans can look for, if the characters from Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace make an appearance, whether we’ll see any Marvel characters, and the film’s current running time, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Greetings, Programs!  Room 6A on Friday morning was treated to an in-depth and detailed look at the upcoming episodes of TRON: Uprising, one of my favorite animated shows on television right now.  If you loved the look and feel of TRON: Legacy, this show definitely has you covered.  However, for those that really wanted the mythology of Tron explored, this show fits that bill as well.  The show picks up not long before Legacy and tells the story of Tron’s first renegade alliance with a fellow program.  For fans, we were treated to a sneak peek at an excellent episode that will showcase how Tron got his distinctive scar and how he eventually turned bad.  Hit the jump for a full panel recap.

A few days ago, I posted an awesome Loki figure from The Avengers made by Hot Toys.  It was the first “Geek Gifts” article in a long time and I mentioned that the response to the post would determine if we’d continue the column.  Let’s just say it was a success.  So, as promised, it’s time for another “Geek Gifts” article and this one is especially relevant for those that like cool t-shirts.

If you’ve ever seen my video interviews, you know I love wearing t-shirts.  I especially love wearing shirts that are inspired by my favorite movies and TV shows.  Recently, a friend turned me onto a company called RedBubble, and they let their users submit their own designs and some of them are pretty great.  Since I know a lot of you don’t have the time to go through the thousands of reader submissions, I’ve done the legwork for you.  So hit the jump if you like Studio Ghibli, Breaking Bad, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Tron, the original Superman, Battle of the Planets, The Lion King, and more.
