In last week’s “Top 5″ I spent the opening paragraph musing about my anticipation for Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire. I also promised the readers a quick “Before & After” discussion this week which would address whether or not the pic lived up to my expectations. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but said discussion will have to be postponed. I know, I know, I’m disappointed too. Fear not, though, I’m slated to check out the film tonight which means that I’ll be able to deliver on my promise, albeit a week late. In the meantime…

…This week’s “Top 5″ installment brings you interviews with the cast of Underworld: Awakening and the aforementioned Haywire, a gallery of recent films in retro poster form, an ultra-disturbing Rugrats live-action trailer, and all of our Sundance 2012 coverage to date. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

Kris Holden-Ried Talks LOST GIRL and UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

by     Posted 2 years, 99 days ago

On the supernatural drama series Lost Girl, premiering on Syfy January 16th, actor Kris Holden-Ried plays Dyson, a sexy homicide detective who also happens to be a 1,000-year-old wolf-shifter. While he works to help keep the existence of the Fae a secret, he instantly develops an attraction for Bo (Anna Silk), a Succubus who was raised human and only recently learned what she is, and attempts to ensure her safety, especially since she has a tendency to place herself in danger.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Kris Holden-Ried talked about what drew him to Lost Girl, his approach in bringing Dyson to life, that he physically carries himself differently to play a wolf, how lucky he feels to be working with an ensemble of such fantastic individuals, and how amazing it is to have such loyal fans. He also talked about playing a much more vicious werewolf in Underworld: Awakening (the latest installment to the franchise, opening on January 20th), being the antagonist to Kate Beckinsale’s character Selene, working with two directors on the film, and being naked in 3D. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

December was the month of epic soundtrack news, with Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross reuniting for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the more recent announcement of The Hunger Games soundtrack, produced by T Bone Burnett and featuring Taylor Swift. While the musical lineup for the fourth installment in the Underworld series is unlikely to garner an Academy Award, the goth-centric soundtrack is sure to be a commercial success, if the trend from the previous movies continues. The Lakeshore Records album will feature 17 tracks of rock/metal songs that fit in lock-step with the dark energy of Underworld: Awakening. Previous contributors that are making a repeat appearance include Lacuna Coil, Black Light Burns and Linkin Park, with Chester Bennington having contributed a solo track on the first album. The soundtrack will be available in stores on January 17th, three days before Underworld: Awakening hits screens. Hit the jump to check out the full soundtrack.

New Trailer for UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

Kate-Beckinsale-Underworld-slice

Earlier today, we brought you the Screen Gems trailer for Underworld: Awakening that recapped the last three installments to bring you up to speed on the story of Selene (Kate Beckinsale). Perhaps their original trailer was too confusing. Either way, they’ve just released a new trailer with even more footage, including a better look at the mega-Lycan and India Eisley’s (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) character, Eve, who looks to be a crucial part of the movie’s plot. There is a definite tie-in between the recap trailer released earlier today and the reveal of Eve from this new trailer, but I’ll let you connect the dots.

Underworld: Awakening, directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, also stars Michael Ealy (Seven Pounds). The movie is set to open on January 20th, 2012. Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.

New Posters for THE FLOWERS OF WAR, CORIOLANUS, UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING, and GOON

by     Posted 2 years, 162 days ago

We’ve got a batch of new posters to share with you today. First up is the extraordinary new poster for Zhang Yimou’s The Flowers of War. Poster art is definitely not dead, and this gorgeous one-sheet is proof. The film stars Christian Bale in the Chinese period pic about the invading Japanese Imperial Army taking over Nanking. The UK quad for Coriolanus is pretty great as well. Marking Ralph Fiennes’s feature directorial debut, the film is based on Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name. The new poster for Underworld: Awakening is a bit uninspired (not to mention confusing; why does Kate Beckinsale want to shoot met?), and the poster for the hockey comedy Goon is underwhelming as well, especially when compared with the film’s previous posters.

Hit the jump to take a look at the posters. The Flowers of War opens in China on December 16th (and in the U.S. sometime in December), Coriolanus opens January 20th, 2012, Underworld: Awakening opens January 20th as well, and Goon will be available VOD February 24th, and in theaters March 30th. [Update: We've been asked to take the Underworld poster down. An official version should be released soon.]

New Trailer for UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING 3D

The theatrical trailer for Underworld: Awakening 3D has gone online. The fourth film in the Underworld franchise finds Kate Beckinsale’s Selene waking up to a world where humans have discovered the existence of vampires and werewolves and are working to eradicate both species. We get a better sense of the story here, as a young hybrid girl seems to be the key to the war between humans vs. vampires vs. werewolves. I’m not the biggest fan of the series, but it looks to have more of the action, effects, and blood-suckingness that permeated throughout the other films so fans should be appeased.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Be sure to check out all of Steve’s coverage of the film from his set-visit, including interviews with Beckinsale and directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, as well as a full recap. Underworld: Awakening opens in 3D on January 20th, 2012.

If you’re just tuning in, a few months back we started the weekly “Top 5″ feature as a way of aggregating all of what we deem to be our best, most relevant coverage from the preceding week into one place. The hope is that you, the reader, will have already scoped all of this material out and shared it with your millions of friends (either real, virtual, or both). However, if for whatever reason some of it has fallen through the cracks, you can come here, check it out, and then share it with all of your friends (again, either real, virtual, or both). That in mind…

In this week’s installment, you’ll find all of our coverage from Steve’s Underworld: Awakening set visit and Disney’s D23 Expo, interviews for the Guillermo del Toro produced horror flick Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and the Paul Rudd comedy Our Idiot Brother, and a slightly improved, slightly less puppet-friendly version of Yoda in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Check out brief recaps and links to all of the above after the jump.

Kate Beckinsale On Set Interview UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

Kate-Beckinsale-naked-slice

Back in early May, I got to visit the set of Underworld: Awakening when the production was filming in Vancouver.  While on set, I got to participate in a group interview with producer Kate Beckinsale.  Here’s some of the highlights:

  • She didn’t plan on returning to the franchise. She thought it was going to be a trilogy and that was that, and had no interest in coming back until Wiseman told her his idea for the fourth film, which she took a liking to.
  • When casting her daughter in the film, Wiseman told her he found the perfect girl. Then, without knowing who it was that Wiseman was talking about, Beckinsale and her daughter were browsing around a Barnes and Noble where she spotted a girl that looked exactly like her. The girl in the bookstore turned out to be the same girl Wiseman was talking about (India Eisley), and she was cast in the film.
  • Being one of the few people left from the original film, she had a voice in making some of the more creative decisions about her character.
  • She enjoyed the added stakes to the film that came with the addition of a daughter for Selene.
  • The film follows Selene’s journey as a not-so-maternalistic woman who finds out that she now has a teenage daughter.

Hit the jump for the full interview. She also talks about working for two directors, the 3D cameras, the Underworld fanbase, and a lot more.

Directors Mans Marlind & Bjorn Stein On Set Interview UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

Directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein underworld 4 awakening slice

Back in early May, I got to visit the set of Underworld: Awakening when the production was filming in Vancouver.  While on set, I got to participate in a group interview with directors Mans Marlind & Bjorn Stein.  Here’s some of the highlights:

  • When they were starting out, they wanted to work together but they both liked the same aspects of filmmaking, so they decided to direct every second day. One would direct one day, and the other the next day, and whoever’s day off it is would just be the other director’s “best buddy,” there to help him on whatever he needs help on. The best buddy also deals with the producers and such while the other director is focused on the shoot.
  • They say Underworld: Awakening is different from the other films in that it’s a more emotional story, and the look of the film is all them.
  • Regarding comparisons to Twilight, they say Underworld has a completely different vibe than those films, it’s very dark. It’s a completely different vampire.
  • Underworld: Awakening was the first time either of them had worked with a digital camera as opposed to film.
  • What’s new about the 4th Underworld is “we’re bringing them into the real world because man now is a player. Before, it was just Lycans and vampires. It was really fun to bring the werewolves into downtown to see what would happen.”
  • There’s a big car chase scene in the movie where the characters are being chased by Lycans through the middle of the city.

Hit the jump for the full interview.  They also talk about filming in 3D, the way they work together, how they got hired to do the movie, and a lot more.

Producer Richard Wright On Set Interview UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

Producer Richard Wright Interview UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING slice

Back in early May, I got to visit the set of Underworld: Awakening when the production was filming in Vancouver.  While on set, I got to participate in a group interview with producer Richard Wright.  Here’s some of the highlights:

  • Although there’s no greenlight or script for a fifth installment, Wright says they have a pretty good idea of who the characters will be and what the basic timeline would be. Underworld 5 would probably take place after the events of 4.
  • The first ten minutes of Underworld: Awakening is a prologue that explains everything that’s happened before the events of the film, then it cuts to 15 years later.
  • The co-directors (Mans Marlind & Bjorn Stein) would trade off days being the director of the film. One of them is more the writer and one is more the editor.
  • Although Len Wiseman isn’t directing this time around, he’s still heavily involved as a producer and he wrote the original story.
  • Instead of the normal one day of test shooting, they shot tests for five weeks with the RED EPIC 3D cameras in order to become well-versed in the technology.
  • They’re taking an understated and somewhat conservative approach to the 3D, but there will still be little moments of projectiles and things coming out at the audience.
  • While Scott Speedman isn’t back for this film, his character plays a role in Awakening, and the idea is that Speedman would return for Underworld 5.
  • Given the darkness of the Underworld films, the projected image will be brighter to compensate for the dimming of 3D.

Hit the jump for the full interview.   He goes into a lot of detail about how they got Kate Beckinsale to be in the 4th installment, what the film is about, working with the 3D cameras, and a lot more.

Michael Ealy On Set Interview UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

Michael Ealy Underworld 4 Awakening image slice

Back in early May, I got to visit the set of Underworld: Awakening when the production was filming in Vancouver.  While on set, I got to participate in a group interview with Michael Ealy.  Here’s some of the highlights:

  • Ealy plays a human cop who starts to investigate into the world of vampires and Lycans.
  • In the world of Underworld: Awakening, most humans believe that Lycans are extinct.
  • He was jarred by the fact that the directors and the producers and everyone watched the playback of each scene in 3D in the tent.
  • He said at the beginning, when everyone was getting the hang of it, it took a while to shoot because working with 3D was more difficult. But as the production went on, it got faster.
  • He’s in the big action sequence at the end of the movie, but he doesn’t get to fight the twelve-foot uber-Lycan?

Hit the jump for the full interview. He also talks about working for two directors at the same time, Comic-Con, sports, and a lot more.
