To promote the January 4, 2011 release of Jay Roach’s Dinner for Schmucks on DVD and Blu-Ray Paramount Studios held a dinner party of their own featuring movie stars, rock stars, comedians, a few circus freaks and Collider. We fit right in.

Held in Hollywood’s famous The Roosevelt hotel, the dinner began with drinks and light chatter between the cast members in attendance: including Rick Overton (The Office), Andrea Savage (Step Brothers), stand up Octavia Spencer, Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek), The Bangles member Susanna Hoffs, and Director Jay Roach, and the various film journalists assembled for the evening. Read on for the details.

Oscar Wilde once said that, “A bore is someone who deprives you of solitude without providing you with company.” And while their characters may well have been bores in Dinner for Schmucks, the assembled talent was anything but in person. Happily riffing on everything from replacement testicles for neutered dogs, to the latest Hollywood releases, to the actions of their costars both on and off set, these comedians were all too happy to have the spotlight to them for the evening, and they did well with it.

But up and coming comics and a swanky open bar weren’t the only attractions. As the guests and actors mingled and sipped on specialty drink variations such as the “Schmuck-tini,” a series of sideshow personalities moved through the room, showing off bizarre talents that were every bit as shocking and outrageous as those displayed by the guests in the film.

Jay Roach may not be the first name that comes to mind when one thinks of sharp political satire, but with his recent Emmy Award winning drama Recount he has proven that he is both funny, and politically adroit.

Now, he is preparing to shoot a political comedy starring Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell for release just in time for the 2012 election cycle. At a dinner to promote the upcoming DVD release of Dinner for Schmucks, Roach gave us the lowdown on the new film as well as tidbits about his aborted take on Used Guys and the possible future of Austin Powers 4. Hit the jump for the details.

I was lucky enough to be seated directly next to Roach during dinner. Over the course of the evening we talked about everything from fake testicles for neutered bulldogs to the differences between German collectivism and American individualism.

The concept of Narcissistic Personality Disorder seems to weigh heavily on Roach’s mind and play into this new film with Ferrell’s character playing a narcissist driven by his own confidence while Galifianakis will play “something else,” which in context seemed to allude to a sort of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington vibe.

This news does not come as a surprise frankly, as Ferrell has spent his entire career playing pompous boobs, but at the same time, given the depth of specific political analysis that Roach casually threw off, it seems as though the film might reach a little deeper into the cultural zeitgeist. That said, ...

In Hollywood, it is not uncommon for a film to completely stall and be revived years down the road. That trend continues with a glimmer of hope for Fox’s futuristic comedy Used Guys, which once touted director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents) and was set to star Ben Stiller and Jim Carrey in a world run by women where guys are traded like cars. While the film was initially canned for a number of issues, including a blossoming budget upwards of $100 million, a less expensive version may go into production. According to Variety (via The Playlist), Danny McBride is attached to play the role originally held by Carrey. This would be the third shot at getting Used Guys to finally lens, and a lot is still uncertain at this stage with production slated for late next year. Hit the jump to see all that has changed over the past four years, and what Jay Roach had to say about the film earlier this year.

Things were looking up for Used Guys last year, as Stiller was still attached and Reese Witherspoon was set to join him in a lead role (which was rumored to be the rejigged role of Carrey). Additionally, Little Miss Sunshine helmers Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton were set to direct, in place of Roach. However, nothing seemed to move on the project as news on the film went dark. With the new report of McBride coming on board, there is also the confirmation that Faris and ...

Unlike some directors that crave the spotlight, Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Meet the Fockers, Recount) is more man of mystery. That's because even though he's directed some of the biggest comedies of the last decade, I've rarely seen him do interviews and you don't read his name in the trades everyday like some of his peers. So when I found out I'd landed an exclusive interview for his new movie Dinner For Schmucks, I wasn't sure if Roach would be guarded, or if he'd be willing to talk about anything.

Thankfully, Roach couldn't have been nicer and you can read or listen to the interview after the jump. During the almost thirty minutes we talked about why he makes so few films and why he's so selective, how does he find his projects, he talked about a project that almost got made called Used Guys, improv vs. scripted, making Dinner For Schmucks, deleted scenes, the mice and how they were made, digital vs. film, 3D, and of course we talked about whether or not he'll make another Austin Powers movie with Mike Myers.

And for fans of Austin Powers, Roach said, "If we ever did an Austin Powers 4, I would love to do Dr. Evil’s world in 3D. It would be fantastic. It’d be great to use it as a one-world as 3D and the other world is…" So much more after the jump:

As always, you can either read the full transcript below or ...
