Last month, we reported that Dane Cook would lead the voice cast of Disney’s Cars spin-off, Planes. His character, Dusty, dreams of being a racer, but because he’s not built for it, he turns to a seasoned naval aviator to help him take on the defending champ of the racing circuit. Today, Disney has announced the actors voicing the supporting characters. It’s a surprisingly large cast that has Top Gun‘s Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards voicing fighter jets, which is a nice touch. The voice cast also includes Stacy Keach, Cedric the Entertainer, Teri Hatcher, Brad Garrett, Roger Craig Smith, Gabriel Iglesias, Carlos Alazraqui, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Priyanka Chopra, Sinbad, Brent Musburger, and ESPN’s vile radio host Colin Cowherd. Cowherd voices blimp “Colin Cowling”. It is currently unknown if the blimp will engage in race-baiting.

Though development on a sequel to Top Gun appears to have stalled following the tragic death of director Tony Scott, it appears that the 3D re-release of the original will be getting the largest possible exhibition. We’ve long-known that Scott’s 1986 classic was getting a 3D post-conversion, but Paramount Pictures announced today that the film will be released exclusively in select IMAX 3D screens for a limited engagement starting February 8th. Fans now have a chance to see that intense slow motion volleyball fighter pilot action on the big, big screen. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Director Terrence Malick’s currently-shooting untitled film set within the Austin music scene isn’t exactly lacking in actors, but we all know that just because you shoot scenes for a Terrence Malick movie doesn’t mean you’ll actually be in a Terrence Malick movie. The latest actor to possibly join the cast is Val Kilmer, and based on images of the actor on set, I’m really, really, really hoping he makes the final cut. Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Michael Fassbender star the pic, and we’ve previously seen images of Mara shooting scenes while “performing” on stage with Black Lips.
Kilmer recently filmed some scenes onstage with Mara and Black Lips, and in true Val Kilmer fashion he didn’t exactly play it straight. Images show him using a walker, cutting his own hair, and wielding a chainsaw next to Mara. I’m not sure if his role is more of a manifestation/presence than an actual person (which isn’t out of the question for a Malick pic), but this is some wonderfully weird stuff. Hit the jump to take a look.

The 1988 Lucasfilm fantasy Willow apparently had aspirations for the small screen as an animated series. We’ll blame the lackluster box office for the failure of the project, but we can still take a look at some concept art that was drafted along the way. Directed by Ron Howard and written by George Lucas, the feature film followed the dwarf-like character Willow (Warwick Davis), barbarian Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and warrior princess Sorsha (Joanne Whalley) as they attempted to protect an infant from the diabolical plans of an evil queen (Jean Marsh). It’s a classic swords-and-sorcery flick with some great moments; it even managed to garner two Academy Award nominations (for Sound Effects Editing and Visual Effects). While it’s a shame that I can’t relive the childhood memories of watching an animated Willow on Saturday mornings, these images provide a nice glimpse of what could have been. It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen anything from Jack Black and Kyle Gass’ greatest rock band of all time, Tenacious D, but the dry spell has now come to an end. The duo has released a video chronicling their return and teasing their new album, Rize of the Fenix. The video begins with an Extra special covering the demise of Tenacious D following the box office failure of Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, then brings on a slew of celebrity cameos (Val Kilmer! Dave Grohl! Josh Groban?) that help bring the band back to its former glory. It’s pretty funny and definitely worth your time, especially for the Val Kilmer awesomeness.
Hit the jump to watch the video. The band’s new album, Rize of the Fenix, will be released on May 15th.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Val Kilmer, Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill) and Kate Maberly (Finding Neverland) have joined the cast of D.J. Caruso’s indie The Goats. Based on the young adult novel by Brock Cole, the story centers on two kids who are stranded on Goat Island following a summer camp prank. Rather than return to camp, the duo set out on their own adventure and run away. Chandler Canterbury (Knowing) and Annalise Basso (Bedtime Stories) are set as the two young leads. Variety reports that Kilmer and Mitchell will play parents, with Maberly taking on the role of a camp counselor. Production on Caruso’s passion project began today in Georgia. Hit the jump for the casting news of Toby Kebbel in Zal Batmanglij’s The East, and a synopsis of The Goats.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt wants to take pot shots at every kind of horror story by working under the guise of being a bad horror movie. Coppola mocks Edgar Allan Poe, Steven King, vampire stories, and 3D but his criticism is rarely playful. Twixt wants to keep things silly and fun in the “real” half of the story but then wants act superior when it comes to the ethereal aspects of its tale. The result is a film that’s always campy, somewhat lazy, and more than a little tiresome.

We’ve raved about the Twixt presentation we saw at Comic-Con and a similar version of the promo trailer we saw has gone online. During the presentation, the promo trailer was reedited multiple times with different music, and this is yet a new cut, but it still conveys the gist of what we saw. You can see that the movie looks all over the place but all those places look interesting and it’s one of the many reasons why Twixt has me intrigued.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning, and Ben Chaplin. Twixt will play at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Every time I write about Twixt, I’m probably going to rave about the film’s presentation at Comic-Con. I would sit through five Total Recall presentations just to get something as interesting and as fun as Twixt. I have no idea if the movie will be any good or not or even what the movie will be. Due to the way it will be “performed”, the version you see of Twixt (which will be partially in 3D) may be different than the version someone else sees. It’s a fascinating experiment but it also looks like it could be damn entertaining. If I make it up to Toronto for this year’s film festival, there are plenty of films I want to see and Twixt is near the top of the list.
New images from the film have gone online along with a few new set photos. Hit the jump to check them out. Twixt stars Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Ben Chaplin, and Elle Fanning.

If you were around these parts during Comic-Con, you may have already read about writer/director Francis Ford Coppola’s highly engaging Hall H panel for his new film Twixt. While I was off doing interviews somewhere with someone, the five-time Oscar winner was entertaining audience members with a live-cut of the film with the help of his iPad and musician Dan Deacon. It was also then that he revealed his plan to tour with the pic and essentially DJ the film via on-the-spot editing to be determined by audience reaction. Take that, 3D…
With all of this experimentation in mind, four promotional posters for Twixt have now landed online and can be viewed in all of their bloody glory after the jump. Starring Val Kilmer, Elle Fanning, Bruce Dern, and Ben Chaplin, the film will tell the story (in one way or another) of a declining writer (Kilmer) who becomes caught up in a small town murder mystery while on his book tour. The film will premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival which runs from September 8th – 18th.

If you’re a movie fan, today is a great day. That’s because thanks to the Toronto International Film festival announcing some of their 2011 schedule, we’ve been inundated with a tremendous amount of new movie images for some of the biggest films arriving later this year. And continuing our coverage, after the jump you can check out the first images from Derick Martini’s Hick (which stars Blake Lively, Chloe Moretz, Alec Baldwin, Juliette Lewis, Eddie Redmayne and Rory Culkin), Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass Jeff, Who Lives at Home (which stars Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Judy Greer and Susan Sarandon) Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt (starring Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning and Ben Chaplin) and the first clip and images from Killer Joe (which stars Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon).

Val Kilmer, Ray Liotta, Gina Gershon, and Kelli Giddish (Chase) are set to star in Jesse Baget’s Breathless. Before you freak out and think that they’re remake Jean-Luc Godard’s classic film, Baget’s movie is a thriller about a woman (Gershon), “who is fed up with her husband’s criminal acts and plans with her best friend to do something about him. Kilmer would play the husband and Liotta would play a local sheriff brought into the mix.” Variety reports that Baget co-wrote the script with Stefania Moscato.
Kilmer continues to be one of Hollywood’s undervalued actors. When I was at the amazing Twixt panel at Comic-Con, I could see an entire film of him just riffing out an opening sentence to a wannabe-Stephen King novel. Liotta’s also great and even though he does direct-to-DVD stuff like Street Kings 2, he can still deliver the goods like he did in the Sundance flick The Details. Liotta will be seen later this year in the David Wain comedy Wanderlust and next year in the Brad Pitt crime drama Cogan’s Trade.

When most people think of Comic-Con, big-budget comic-book movies and flashy genre pictures come to mind. However, this year’s Comic-Con has already been host to two Academy Award-winning directors—Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson for The Adventures of Tintin—and today Hall H was host to one more: Francis Ford Coppola. The Godfather director was front and center for his latest film as a writer/director, the Gothic horror film Twixt. The cast includes Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, and Elle Fanning, and centers on a a hack horror novelist who has ghostly visions that lead him to investigate a young girl’s murder.
Coppola presented the film today alongside musician Dan Deacon and star Val Kilmer, and what followed was one of the most bizarre, surreal, and wildly entertaining things I’ve seen. Coppola revealed his plan to tour with the film, literally performing like a conductor by editing and changing the movie based on the audience reaction throughout the duration of the film. We were given a demonstration, and it was a bit insane. Hit the jump for my full recap of the Twixt panel.

EFish Entertainment has contracted Val Kilmer, Ving Rhames, Luke Goss, and Rebecca Da Costa to star in the independent thriller Seven Below. Speaking as a sucker for any movie that bends time and space, the logline provided by Variety sounds pretty cool:
“Story centers on a group of strangers brought together when a terrible storm leaves them stranded in a house in the woods where a terrible event transpired exactly 100 years prior. The group seems trapped in a ghostly time warp, and history is repeating itself.”
Kevin Carraway will direct from a script he co-wrote with Lawrence Smith; Warren Ostergard, Brianna, Lee Johnson, and Eric Mark Fisher (“EFish” himself) are producing. Production was initially scheduled earlier this year in New Mexico before a change in the state tax credits lured EFish to Cincinnati. The new start date is next month.
