Based on the best-selling book series from author Richelle Mead, Vampire Academy tells the story of half-vampire/half-human guardian Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) and her royal Moroi vampire best friend Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry).  As two 17-year-old girls trying to survive the perils of Moroi society and high school, Rose will sacrifice everything to protect Lissa from those who are putting her life in jeopardy.  From director Mark Waters (Mean Girls) and writer Dan Waters (Heathers), the film also stars Danila Kozlovsky, Dominic Sherwood, Sarah Hyland, Cameron Monaghan and Sami Gayle.

At the film’s press day, actor Dominic Sherwood (who plays Lissa’s love interest, Christian Ozera) talked about his audition process, focusing on the humanity of the characters, that they talked about really lighting his hands on fire before they decided to do it with CGI, what makes this vampire story different, when he realized just how popular these books are, working with this cast, and the type of roles he’d like to pursue next.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

It was clear that The LEGO Movie was going to be big, but ‘big’ in February usually means something different than at other times of the year.  Most projections had the animated film opening between $45 and $60 million.  Instead, the big screen debut of the classic toy brand earned an estimated $69.1 million from 3,775 locations.  That counts as big in any month, and stands as one of the best openings ever for an original animated feature.  The Monuments Men and Vampire Academy were also new this weekend, though only the former ended up successfully counterprogramming the LEGO juggernaut.

4 Clips from VAMPIRE ACADEMY Starring Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, and Olga Kurylenko

The Weinstein Company has released four new clips from the adaptation of the Richelle Mead novel Vampire Academy.  The film takes place at the titular hidden boarding school and follows Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch), a bodyguard for her best friend and Moroi vampire princess, Liss (Lucy Fry).  The pair faces the dangers of St. Vladimir’s Academy while navigating forbidden romances and awkward social situations.  Though some may have automatically written the pic off as another YA adaptation targeted at teens, it actually looks incredibly sharp and features strong pedigree in the form of Heathers screenwriter Daniel Waters and Mean Girls director Mark Waters.

The first trailer for Mark Waters’ Vampire Academy shows off the latest adaptation in the supernatural YA craze.  Adapted by Daniel Waters (Batman Returns), the Richelle Mead novel series follows Rose Hathaway, who works as a bodyguard for her best friend and Moroi vampire princess, Lissa.  The pair must survive the dangers of St. Vladimir’s Academy while navigating forbidden romances and awkward social situations.  Oh, and the fact that the deadly Strigoi want to claim Lissa for their own.  This first trailer doesn’t so much explain anything that’s going on or even tell us who these teens are, but it does introduce us to the world inside the academy walls, which is a sexy and bloody world, indeed.

Starring Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danila Kozlovsky, Gabriel Byrne, Sarah Hyland, Joely Richardson, Cameron Monaghan, Sami Gayle, Claire Foy and Ashley Charles, Vampire Academy opens February 14, 2014.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer and view some new images.
