A new extended featurette for the upcoming third season of the resurrected AMC drama series The Killing has been released online, offering up a bounty of footage and info about the crime show's return. Season three picks up a year and a half after the events of the season two finale, as Mireille Enos’ Linden is now working in an isolated job outside the police force and Joel Kinnaman’s Holder has a new partner. Linden gets roped back in when bodies start piling up and Holder realizes that his serial killer case may be connected to one of Linden’s past cases. New cast member Peter Sarsgaard—who plays a death row inmate—notes that the season has three different narratives that are connected, so it’ll be interesting to see if showrunner Veena Sud can successfully weave the storylines while maintaining momentum or if the show will get bogged down with melancholy and minimal development like season two.

Hit the jump to watch the full featurette. The two-hour season three premiere of The Killing airs on AMC on June 2nd.

The Killing is officially back from the dead. After we previously caught wind of the resurrection, it was announced today that the cancelled AMC series The Killing will return for a third season on the network, with Veena Sud back as executive producer/showrunner and stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman on tap to reprise their roles as Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder. The new season picks up one year after the events of the season two finale, with a retired Linden pulled back into the job when her ex-partner’s “search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden.” Hit the jump for more details.

The Killing drew harsh criticism when the central murder of the first season was extended through the second season, with resolution not coming until the season two finale. Presumably as a direct result of the reaction, it was announced that the new season three case will be resolved over the course of its 12 episodes. As the new string of episodes focus on a new case, the characters portrayed by Billy Campbell (Mayor Richmond), Brent Sexton (Stan Larson), and Michelle Forbes (Mitch Larson) will not be returning. Production begins next month in Vancouver, but no airdate has been set. One assumes we might see The Killing back on AMC later this fall.

Here’s the press release:

The Killing returns. Months after AMC cancelled the drama series following its second season, it appears that a deal is being hammered out to now bring the show back. Deadline reports that The Killing producer Fox TV Studios was relentless in their pursuit to keep the show alive, and after talking with a number of potential buyers they finally found a partner in Netflix. AMC will be teaming up with the streaming juggernaut for the third season, with AMC airing the episodes first before they go up on Netflix. Hit the jump for more.

The mystery series grabbed a lot of attention during its first season and stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman broke out in a big way, but many viewers were frustrated when producers declined to wrap up the first season's case during its finale. Viewership took a steep drop in season two, leading to AMC’s decision not to renew the show for a third go-around.

Deadline purports that this new decision may actually be good for AMC, as the network is looking at losing a few of its flagship series soon. Breaking Bad comes to an end after next season, Man Men only has two seasons left, and the future of Hell on Wheels is now in limbo as series showrunner John Shiban recently jumped ship following a season three pick-up. They still have megahit The Walking Dead, but their bullpen is starting to look thin.

Enos and Kinnaman are contractually obligated to return for season three, though both have been ...

Apparently mining Alfred Hitchcock material is all the rage at the moment. Last week we learned that DreamWorks and Working Title are cooking up a new adaptation of Rebecca, and now Paramount is looking to adapt Suspicion. Hitchcock’s 1941 film was based on Francis Illes’s 1932 novel Before the Fact and starred Joan Fontaine and Cary Grant (Fontaine won an Oscar for her performance). Variety reports that Paramount has set Veena Sud, executive producer/showrunner of the AMC series The Killing, to pen the screenplay and direct.

The story centers on “a dowdy young woman” who marries an irresponsible charmer and then begins to suspect that her husband plans to kill her. The pic is Sud’s first foray into feature films, as her television career includes work on CBS’s Cold Case and ABC’s Push, Nevada. I enjoyed the first few episodes of The Killing, but the Twin Peaks similarities and reliance on red herrings became irksome. Sud is an undeniably talented writer, and it’ll be interesting to see her take on Suspicion. Whether Sud will be going back to the original novel or if the film is a straight remake of Hitchcock’s is unspecified. In any case, a synopsis for Illes’s book is included after the jump.

Here’s the synopsis for Before the Fact:
Described on its first publication in 1932 as ‘one of the finest studies of murder ever written’, Before the Fact tells the tale of wealthy but plain Lina Mclaidlaw, who marries the charming and feckless Johnny Aysgarth against the advice ...

Based on the popular Danish television series Forbrydelsen, the AMC drama The Killing tells the story of the murder of a young girl in Seattle and the subsequent police investigation. Tying together three distinct stories, the series follows the detectives assigned to the case, the victim’s grieving family, and the suspects, with each of the 13 episodes covering one day.

When teenager Rosie Larsen (Katie Findlay) is found murdered, Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) is the lead homicide detective called in to investigate the case, and ex-narc cop Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) becomes her partner on the crime. Seattle’s City Council President, Darren Richmond (Billy Campbell), is in the midst of his campaign for Mayor when Rosie’s body is discovered in the trunk of a campaign vehicle. And, Rosie’s distraught parents, Mitch (Michelle Forbes) and Stan (Brent Sexton), are searching for answers about what happened to their daughter.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, executive producer/writer/showrunner Veena Sud (Cold Case) talked about how she adapted the Danish series for an American audience, the appeal of having such a strong female lead character in the center of the series, the importance of finding actors who could carry the weight of this story, her interest in exploring what human nature is capable of, and what an incredibly intense effort it is to create the world of a series, from the ground up. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

We just heard last week that AMC was close to holding up its perfect pilot-to-series ratio for its original programming as the network inched closer to picking up The Killing for a full series order. Well today AMC announced via press release that they have officially picked up The Killing as a new original series slated to premiere sometime in 2011. An adaptation of the Danish TV series Forbrydelsen, the story centers on the murder of a young girl and the subsequent police investigation through the perspective of the detectives, the grieving family, and the suspects. We'll let the full press release after the jump take care of the rest of the details.

AMC announced today a full series order for the pilot that was formerly known as The Killing, from writer and executive producer Veena Sud (Cold Case). Sud has signed on to also serve as the showrunner for the series, which is currently untitled. Set in Seattle, the series is based on the wildly successful Danish television series Forbrydelsen and tells the story of the murder of a young girl and the subsequent police investigation. Produced by Fox Television Studios, it is executive produced by Mikkel Bondesen (Burn Notice) for Fuse Entertainment. Fuses Kristen Campo co-produces. AMC first announced the pilot order in January 2010 with Patty Jenkins (Monster) directing the pilot. Production on the series begins this fall in Vancouver and season one consists of 13, one-hour episodes. The series is slated to premiere in 2011 on AMC.
