Tuesday evening’s TV ratings are in. Here’s a brief look at the highlights:

Smash’s future looks pretty dim. Following the abysmal ratings for its season premiere two weeks ago, last night’s episode dropped a whopping 25% for a series-low 0.9 rating and 3.29 million viewers versus the season two premiere’s 1.2 rating. The NBC drama’s days are likely numbered.
Also down was Fox’s New Girl, which scored a 2.2 rating and 4.36 million viewers for yet another creatively swell episode. That’s a drop of 15% from its last original episode’s 2.6 rating.
NBC’s new comedy Go On—which has been one of the better performing new programs of the season—has been having some trouble gaining its momentum back following the December break. Last night’s episode garnered a 1.1 rating and 3.32 million viewers, which is down 15% from its last new episode’s 1.3 rating.
The series premiere of The CW’s Cult was met with a muted response, as the episode netted a 0.3 rating and 940,000 viewers. For comparison’s sake, that’s down from the now-cancelled Emily Owens, M.D.’s 0.4 rating for its series finale a few weeks ago.

Hit the jump for the full ratings report for Tuesday, February 19th, including NCIS, The Mindy Project, The New Normal, and more.
FOX

Raising Hope scored a 1.5 rating and 3.7 million viewers in the demo, which is down 6% from its last new episode’s 1.6 rating.
Also down was New Girl, which hit a 2.2 rating and 4.36 million viewers for a drop of 15% from its last original episode’s ...

Opening this weekend is director Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller Side Effects. Written by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, The Informant!), the film is about “a successful New York couple (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum) whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by Emily’s psychiatrist (Jude Law)—intended to treat anxiety—has unexpected side effects.” The film also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vinessa Shaw.

At the recent Los Angeles press day I landed an exclusive interview with Vinessa Shaw. While we were scheduled to talk about her work in Side Effects, we actually spent a lot of time talking about one of her other projects: Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut (she played a small but significant role as an HIV-positive prostitute). As a huge fan of Kubrick (like all of you) I figured it would be cool to hear some behind-the-scenes stories about the making of his last film. Of course we also talked about Side Effects, her work on CBS' Vegas, and her next film, Electric Slide. Read or listen to what she had to say after the jump.

Click here to listen to the audio of this interview, otherwise the full transcript is below.

Steve: You worked with Stanley Kubrick.

Vinessa Shaw: Yes.

How did you get involved in that film?

Shaw: You’ll never believe it was just a very simple process I just auditioned. However during the auditioning process the movie was so under wraps, I don’t know if you remember back in the day, all you were allowed to say was a movie about ...

Tuesday’s TV ratings are in. Here's a brief look at the highlights:

Apparently even hate-watchers get tired of watching Smash, as the second season premiere of NBC’s musical drama series absolutely flatlined with a series low 1.1 rating and 4.47 million viewers. That’s a 71% drop from the series premiere 3.8 rating and a 39% drop from last season’s finale rating of 1.8. A creative change behind the scenes took place to try to course-correct the show, but apparently fans just weren’t interested in coming back.
Hot off last week’s much buzzed-about episode, another excellent installment of New Girl dipped a bit, hitting a 2.5 rating and 4.81 million viewers. That’s down 4% from last week’s 2.6 rating.
On the other hand, Fox’s The Mindy Project saw a rise of 12% from last week’s 1.7 rating with a 1.9 rating and 3.6 million viewers.

Hit the jump for the full ratings report for Tuesday, February 5th, including NCIS, Vegas, Hart of Dixie, and more.
FOX

Raising Hope saw a drop of 6% from last week’s 1.7 rating with a 1.6 rating and 4.6 million viewers.
Last night’s New Girl garnered a 2.5 rating in the demo and 4.81 million viewers, dropping 4% from last week’s 2.6 rating.
New series The Mindy Project notched a 1.9 rating and 3.6 million viewers, rising 12% from last week’s 1.7 rating.

NBC

The two-hour season premiere of Smash scored a paltry 1.1 rating and 4.47 million viewers, which is down 39% from the season one finale’s 1.8 rating. The show was the lowest-rated program ...

After most of Monday’s programming was postponed due to the hurricane, many shows aired Tuesday night. It’s important to note, though, that many people on the east coast are still without power, so these numbers are likely soft. Here’s a look at the highlights:

After disappointing numbers for its delayed season premiere, the really fun second episode of Happy Endings was down double digits. This week’s episode scored a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.72 million viewers, down 22% from last week’s 1.8 rating.
Also down was the Halloween episode of The Mindy Project, which scored a 1.5 rating and 3.2 million viewers. That’s a steep drop of 21% from the last new episode’s 1.9 rating.
This week’s episode of The CW drama Hart of Dixie was up 20%, scoring a 0.6 rating against last week’s 0.5.

Hit the jump for the full ratings report for Tuesday, October 30th, including New Girl, Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23, Ben and Kate, NCIS, Vegas and more.
FOX

This week’s episode of Raising Hope was even with last week with a 1.7 rating and 4.09 million viewers.
New comedy Ben and Kate was also even with last week, scoring a 1.4 rating and 3.07 million viewers.
A stand-out Halloween episode of New Girl garnered a 2.3 rating and 4.81 million viewers, down a whopping 15% from last week’s 2.7 rating.
After taking two weeks off for baseball and the debate, The Mindy Project returned down considerably with a 1.5 rating and 3.2 million viewers. That’s a drop of ...

The ratings for Tuesday evening’s comedy-packed programming are in. Here’s a brief look at the highlights:

ABC’s ensemble comedy Happy Endings finally returned last night, and though the season premiere’s 1.9 rating and 5.9 million total viewers topped last year’s finale (1.7 rating), the numbers were way down from last season’s premiere which scored a 3.1 rating in the 18-49 demo.
The third season of NBC’s highly underrated drama Parenthood continues its impressive rise, as last night’s episode earned a 1.9 rating and 4.8 million viewers. Though that’s down from last week’s 2.0 rating, last night’s emotional episode beat both Vegas and Private Practice in the timeslot.
Fox’s new comedy Ben and Kate—which has been struggling a bit in the ratings race—saw a nice uptick last night as it earned a 1.4 rating and 3.05 million viewers for a rise of two tenths.

Hit the jump for the full ratings report for Tuesday, October 23rd, including New Girl, Don’t Trust the B—in Apt 23, Hart of Dixie, The New Normal, Go On, and more.
NBC

The Matthew Perry-fronted comedy series Go On—which continues to be one of the most successful new series on television—garnered a 2.5 rating and 6.4 million viewers. It was the second highest rated comedy of the night, next to New Girl.
Ryan Murphy’s comedy The New Normal scored a 1.8 rating and 4.5 million viewers, down from last week’s 2.0 rating. Nevertheless, the show has already scored a full season pick-up.
The creatively fantastic (yet emotionally draining) fourth season of Parenthood continues to soar, ...

In news that probably doesn't surprise anyone, CBS has given the green light to its 1960s Western Vegas as well as the Sherlock-retold Elementary to complete their first seasons fully and without fear of canning. Both series have performed very well, usually winning their time slots (10pm on Tuesdays for Vegas, 10pm on Thursdays for Elementary), and both have a steady procedural foundation which is the core of CBS' drama wheelhouse.

Elementary may have bored some and outraged others (with the casting of a female Watson), but on the whole it's a watchable series that will likely have enough staying power and a devoted fanbase to survive another season (I reviewed its first two episodes and found it decent but not comparable to the BBC's excellent modern Sherlock series). For more on Vegas and what CBS has to say about both shows, hit the jump.

According to CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler (via TV Line),
"Vegas and Elementary have opened strong, delivering big audiences and winning performances in important time periods. Each of the shows has rich characters, big stars and a unique visual style that have stood out in the crowd, helping make two of our strongest nights even stronger."
Vegas (which I also review) is in my opinion the stronger show, with a great cast (Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis) and engaging drama that makes the procedural aspect an addendum, not the focus. It's brought back the idea of the White Hat cowboy, a very missed figure in current television, and best of all, it's based on true people (doesn't that always make things ...

Tuesday’s TV ratings are in and it was a big night for NBC. Here’s a brief look at the highlights:

A particularly emotional episode (aren’t they all?) of NBC’s excellent drama Parenthood scored the show’s best ratings in nearly a year as the Tuesday's ep netted a 2.0 demo rating and 5 million viewers.
The new Matthew Perry-fronted NBC comedy Go On hit a three-week high as this week’s episode garnered a 2.8 rating and 7 million viewers.
Fresh off full-season pick-ups, Fox’s Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project were down a tad and even, respectively, compared to last week’s episodes.
The CW’s Hart of Dixie took a drop again, earning a 0.4 rating down from last week’s 0.7.

Hit the jump for the full ratings report for Tuesday, October 9th, including New Girl, Vegas, Raising Hope, The New Normal, Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, and more.
NBC

NBC won the night in the 18-49 demo, anchored by a top-notch episode of Parenthood that landed a 2.0 rating and 5 million viewers. That’s way up from last week’s 1.6 demo rating and is the show’s best performance since November of 2011. Moreover, an unofficial poll reveals that viewers suffered an average of 1 ugly cry by episode’s end.
The new comedy Go On—which I’d venture to say is the most improved new series of the season by far—hit a three-week high with a 2.8 rating and 7 million viewers. That’s up 33% from last week’s 2.1 rating.
NBC’s other new Tuesday night comedy The New Normal was also ...

Tuesday night’s comedies took another hit this week in the ratings. Here’s a brief glance at the highlights:

Fox’s New Girl was even with last week’s premiere, earning a 2.8 rating in the 18-49 demo for a solid hold.
Elsewhere on Fox the results weren’t quite as promising, as both The Mindy Project and Ben and Kate were down from their series premieres last week with a 1.9 rating and a 1.6, respectively.
NBC didn’t fare much better, as The New Normal and Go On were also down with a 1.7 and a 2.2 rating in the demo, respectively. Nevertheless, both series were picked up for full season orders yesterday.
The second season of The CW’s Hart of Dixie came back strong, earning a 0.7 rating in the demo which is up from the 0.6 rating for the season one finale.

Hit the jump for all the ratings results from Tuesday, October 2nd, including Raising Hope, Parenthood, Vegas, NCIS, and more.
NBC

Fresh off a full season pick-up, the Matthew Perry-fronted Go On scored a 2.2 rating and 6 million viewers, down 13% from last week’s 2.7 rating. The comedy has improved creatively as it’s found its footing (ie. letting the talented ensemble cast shine) and I’m happy to see how the full season progresses.
Also earning a full season pick-up was Ryan Murphy’s comedy The New Normal, but the show’s ratings were down yet again this week with a 1.7 rating and 4.6 million viewers, down 15% from last week’s 2.7 rating.
The drama Parenthood was down a ...

The Fall 2012 TV season began in earnest this week, with most shows having their series/season premieres. Here’s a brief glance at the highlights:

CBS’ Sherlock Holmes update Elementary debuted strong with a 3.1 rating in the 18-49 demo for 13.41 million viewers.
Also at CBS, The Big Bang Theory scored its highest rated season premiere ever with a 5.0 rating and a solid 15.66 million viewers.
Things weren’t all rosy at The Eye, however, as Hawaii Five-0 was way down with a 1.8 rating. That’s a significant drop from last year’s season premiere rating of 3.4 in the coveted 18-49 demo.
NBC’s J.J. Abrams-produced drama Revolution saw an unsurprising drop in viewers from last week’s season premiere, though the 3.4 rating with 9.21 million viewers shows a healthy hold from last week’s 4.1 rating.
Unfortunately, ABC’s excellent pilot for Last Resort debuted to a slightly disappointing 2.2 rating with 9.31 million viewers.

Hit the jump for the TV ratings for the week of September 23 – 29, including New Girl, Parks and Recreation, Grimm, Fringe, South Park, Sons of Anarchy, Castle, and much more.
NBC
Monday

Following some stellar series premiere numbers for Revolution, this Monday’s episode faced an expected drop in numbers, though the decline wasn't near as dramatic as some had expected. Episode two garnered a 3.4 rating in the demo with 9.21 million viewers, down from last week’s 4.1 rating and 11.7 million viewers for the premiere.

Tuesday

Tuesday’s episode of the Matthew Perry-fronted Go On scored a 2.7 rating with 6.90 million viewers, down significantly from last week’s 3.3 rating and 9.33 million ...

As part of the CBS portion of the TCA Press Tour, CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler took some time to talk about both new and returning comedies and dramas from their line-up of shows. During the interview, she spoke about the likelihood of a ninth season for How I Met Your Mother, why CSI: Miami was cancelled, the appeal of Elementary and the decision to have a female Watson, why they chose to bring Unforgettable back after canceling it, and what drew them to Vegas. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Question: There’s already been talk about How I Met Your Mother being extended for a ninth season. What discussions have you had with them about what an extra season would do for the show, creatively?

NINA TASSLER: Well, they had an incredible year, last year. We’ve got a great relationship with (show creators) Craig [Thomas] and Carter [Bays], and certainly they have a very strategic wrap-up to the show. They know we want the show to come back next year. We are having conversations right now about extending it. So, we’re not planning it right now, but we want the show to come back next year. We’re not there yet, in terms of resolving the season. We’re in early conversations, and we’re pretty optimistic.

When the decision was being made about which parts of the CSI franchise to keep, how did you ultimately decide to cancel CSI: Miami?

TASSLER: Well, first of all, saying goodbye to a CSI this ...

In director John Stalberg’s stoner comedy, High School, soon-to-be valedictorian Henry Burke (Matt Bush) decides to get high for the first time in his life after a chance encounter with the school’s resident drug head, Travis Breaux (Sean Marquette). Shortly afterward, he discovers that the school’s dictatorial principal, Dr. Leslie Gordon (Michael Chiklis), has just instituted a zero tolerance drug policy. When Gordon schedules a mandatory drug test for the entire school the next day, Henry sees his dreams of a bright college future are about to go up in smoke. His only option involves stealing law student-turned-drug dealer Psycho Ed’s (Adrien Brody) stash of high powered ganga.

At the press day for High School, we sat down at a roundtable interview with Chiklis and Bush. Chiklis, who portrayed Detective Vic Mackey on FX’s ground-breaking drama The Shield, revealed what attracted him to the project, how he developed his character, and why he had fun playing the outrageous role. Bush discussed how the film compared to his real-life high school experience and why he enjoys playing characters that are distinctly different. They also told us about their latest projects including Chiklis’ new CBS television series, Vegas, with Dennis Quaid and Bush’s feature film, Trouble with the Curve, with Clint Eastwood.

How much like Henry are you? Or are you more like Psycho Ed?

MATT BUSH: Oh Jesus! In high school, I certainly wasn’t the valedictorian. I was the furthest from that. I worked hard, but I wasn’t as smart as him. I don’t ...

Earlier this morning, CBS announced their Fall 2012 schedule. Full trailers have now been unveiled for the network’s new shows, including three dramas and one comedy. Briefly:

Elementary – Jonny Lee Miller stars as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu plays Dr. Joan Watson in this modern day drama about the crime-solving duo.
Vegas – Dennis Quaid stars as a former military police officer who is called in by the Mayor of Las Vegas to look into the murder of a casino worker. Quaid clashes with a ruthless Chicago gangster (Michael Chiklis) in this 1960s drama.
Made in Jersey – Janet Montgomery stars as an attorney who uses her street smarts to compete against her pedigreed Manhattan colleagues.
Partners – This new comedy stars David Krumholtz and Michael Urie as two life-long best friends, one straight and one gay, whose friendship is tested when one of them gets engaged.

The upfronts are nearing an end, and we’ve already seen the new schedules from NBC, Fox, and ABC. Now it’s CBS’s turn. The readers of this site may not exactly be CBS’s target demo—though I’m still watching and enjoying How I Met Your Mother—but The Eye is hoping to change that with a few promising new series slated for this fall. Shifts for returning series include moving the Ashton Kutcher-enhanced Two and a Half Men to Thursdays, while The Mentalist (which is probably your parents’ favorite show) will now air on Sunday. Also, the young-skewing comedy 2 Broke Girls has been pushed back to the prime 9pm slot on Mondays after doing well at 8:30. Moreover, I'm now aware that a show unironically called Crimetime Saturday exists.

As far as new series go, I’m really only keeping my eye on Elementary at this point. I didn’t really find the need for a new Sherlock Holmes series given that we already have the beyond excellent Sherlock (and, to a lesser extent, House), but I’m willing to check out this new drama (starring Jonny Lee Miller as Holmes and Lucy Liu as Watson) to see what they’ve come up with. Hit the jump to check out CBS’s schedule.
