The first Guardians of the Galaxy TV spot is now online!  When you own the network that airs a show that provides interconnecting tissue to your cinematic universe, you can get away with doing more than showing off a thirty-second teaser.  Enter Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which debuted a brief teaser during Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. last night.  The quick TV spot at that space-based property gave us a nice behind-the-scenes look at the film, along with commentary from Kevin Feige, and stars Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and Bradley Cooper.

You’ll have to wait until August 1st to view the movie in full, but for now, hit the jump to watch the first Guardians of the Galaxy TV spot.

Producer Mark Canton Talks 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE, the Sex Scene, POWER, THE LAST WITCH HUNTER with Vin Diesel, an IMMORTALS Sequel, and More

Now playing in theaters is director Noam Murro’s 300: Rise of an Empire.  In the sequel to Zack Snyder’s 300, Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god, Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Artemisia (Eva Green), the vengeful commander of the Persian navy.  The film also stars Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, David Wenham, Igal Nao, Callan Mulvey, Jack O’Connell, and Andrew Tiernan.  I’ve seen the film twice now and am happy to report the sequel kicks ass.  The fight scenes are extremely well done, the 3D actually adds to the story, and Eva Green’s performance is worth the price of admission.  It also might have the best sex scene of 2014, and it’s only February.  While many might have wondered if we needed a sequel to 300, I’m very happy they made it.

At the Los Angeles press day I landed an exclusive video interview with producer Mark Canton.  He talked about working with Harold Ramis early in his career, making Rise of an Empire, the use of 3D, more sequels, Eva Green’s amazing performance, the sex scene, and future projects like Power (which will air on Starz), The Last Witch Hunter with Vin Diesel, the possibility of a sequel to Immortals (they’re trying to find the right story), a trilogy of films about a young Julius Caesar, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

TOP 5: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Set Visit, POMPEII Interviews, FANTASTIC FOUR Casting, Toy Fair 2014

Landing just outside of this week’s Top 5 and earning an opening paragraph mention as a result is the first trailer and poster for writer/editor/director Ti West‘s The Sacrament. Obviously inspired by 1978′s Jonestown Massacre, the film features a team of journalists who attempt to document the story of a seemingly peaceful religious commune only to have the proverbial shit hit the fan in the process. I think West is among the best working directors in terms of creating and maintaining terror as evidenced by both 2009′s The House of the Devil and 2011′s The Innkeepers. Each of those films expertly sustain a sense of dread throughout and if Gene Jones hauntingly daring the visiting journalists to “Take it…” in this first trailer is any indication, The Sacrament looks to be cut from the same stellar mold. While it will be tough to match the psychological horror dealt out by 2011′s cult-centric drama Martha Marcy May Marlene, I’ll be anxiously anticipating West’s latest up until the time it hits VOD on May 1st.

Transitioning to the list section of the feature, this week’s installment highlights the first trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Steve’s set visit coverage for X-Men: Days of Future Past, interviews for and Matt’s review of Paul W.S. Anderson‘s Pompeii, casting news for Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot, and coverage from the floor of Toy Fair 2014 at the Javits Center in NYC. Keep reading for a quick recap and link to each of the above.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn recently said that fans would get to hear Rocket Raccoon speak soon, and he made good on his promise faster than anticipated.  This new teaser video reveals Bradley Cooper as the voice behind the smallest, but feistiest member of the Guardians.  Cooper and Gunn also give their two cents on the character, who may appear cuddly to those unfamiliar with the comics, but in reality has quite a few anger issues.

Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Lee Pace, Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Michael RookerPeter Serafinowicz, and the voice Vin DieselGuardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August 1st.  Hit the jump to hear Rocket speak for the first time! [Update: You can also watch Diesel talk about Groot in a new video after the jump.]

First Trailer for Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana

Marvel has released the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy.  Led by half-human, half-alien Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), the team is comprised of humanoid aliens Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), talking raccoon Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel), a giant, walking tree.  If you were at last year’s Comic-Con, you’ll recognize a lot of the footage, but for the majority of audiences this first look gives a great sense of tone and the type of humor on display in the film.  We also get a solid look at Karen Gillan as Nebula and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector; a dozen new still images from the film can be found here.

Lee Pace, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, and Peter Serafinowicz also star in the comic book adaptation directed by James Gunn.  Guardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August 1st.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

The first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy will air tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Marvel has released a 15-second teaser for it.  The film centers on misfits Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) teaming up to protect a mysterious orb from the clutches of the villainous Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace).  I’m incredibly excited for this movie, and so while I’m usually annoyed by teasers for trailers, in this case I’ll make an exception.

In addition to three new images from James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, we’ve got the details for how you can check out the first trailer for Marvel’s upcoming superhero film.  In addition to all that goodness, Gunn and star Chris Pratt recently shared some insights into the movie and teased how it will be different than any comic book film adaptation that’s come before it.  A tall order, but this cast and crew appear to be up to the task.

Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, Peter Serafinowicz, and Benicio Del Toro also star.  Guardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August 1st.  Hit the jump to check out the new images and to see what Gunn and Pratt had to say.

First Look at the Action Figures for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

We’ll hopefully be getting the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy very soon, but in the meantime we’ll have to settle for another take on the police lineup that’s run through the concept art, the live-action shot, and now the action figures.  In plastic form we now have (from left to right) Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).  The figures are from Hasbro and measure around 6-inches except for Rocket, who’s a little shorter, and Groot, who’s a little taller.  As for the quality, it’s probably best to look past the accuracy of the faces and instead look at the overall detail in the clothes and accessories.  I’m particularly impressed with the markings on Drax, and I hope the mass-produced paint-job does justice to this official image.

Hit the jump to check out the images; the figures will be released in July.  Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.

Vin Diesel would like to thank his fans for making Riddick number one on the DVD sales charts, and he’d like to do it with musical flair.  Diesel took to his ever-popular Facebook page to thank his legions of fans for making the film a home-video success, as well as mentioning Universal’s interest in developing a sequel.  As an added bonus for fans, Diesel provided everyone with a private dance for about seven minutes.  Delightful.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

RIDDICK Blu-ray Review

Behold, the power of cheese! If, after the perceived failure of The Chronicles of Riddick, you said that there would be another Riddick movie – and a full ten years later to boot – most people would think you were crazy. Even crazier to say that the new film would be demonstrably awesome. The Riddick movies were always a bit of an acquired taste: the first a surprise hit that helped make Vin Diesel a star, the second a big-budget epic that marked his gradual descent. Now the third movie arrives with its intended audience firmly in mind, which is part of what makes it such earthy fun. Hit the jump for my full review.

Vin Diesel Shares Image from Last Scene He Filmed with Paul Walker on FAST & FURIOUS 7; Release Date Moved to April 10, 2015

We still don’t know how Universal and director James Wan will proceed with Fast & Furious 7 following Paul Walker‘s death.  There’s the possibility of a January restart date and a rumor about having Cody Walker step in to film his brother’s remaining scenes.  Whichever way the production chooses to move forward, Universal has officially given up its original July 11, 2014 release dateVin Diesel has announced on his Facebook page that the movie will now open on April 10, 2015.  While I’m sure Fast & Furious fans will be disappointed by the delay, I’m sure they’ll also understand that moving the date back is the wisest course of action.  It’s currently an easy weekend with Insidious 3 currently being the only competition (we’ll set aside that 2015 somehow became even crazier in terms of blockbusters).  There’s too much goodwill towards the Fast & Furious franchise, and fans want to see Walker’s final performance (assuming Universal will keep him in the movie).

In addition to announcing the release date, Diesel also posted a photo of the last scene he filmed with Walker along with a personal message.  You can check out the image after the jump.

While rumored since filming began, Marvel has finally confirmed Vin Diesel will be voicing Groot in director James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.  In addition, Diesel posted a picture of himself posing with the tree-like Groot, and James Gunn also offered his thoughts on Diesel being involved in the project.

“Yep it is completely official. AND he’s amazing. I never knew someone could say I AM GROOT so many different ways and with such feeling (and that sounds like I’m kidding but I’m not!)”

FAST & FURIOUS 6 Blu-ray Review

It’s now nearly impossible to watch Fast & Furious 6, and not reflect on the passing of star Paul Walker.  Surely this big fun summer movie will now be tinged with a melancholy that it will be the last time Walker got to play Brian O’Conner in total.  But removed from the context of grief, Furious 6 (as it’s titled on screen) is a lot of fun, for the most part.  Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez co-star in this tale of underground racers turned crime-fighters.  My review of Fast and Furious 6 follows after the jump.

Vin Diesel Wants Ang Lee to Direct KOJAK Because of Course He Does

Vin Diesel loves his fans, and he has no hesitation about teasing them regarding future projects.  His relentless self-promotion is kind of grating if you’re not a Diesel devotee, but hustling is part of Hollywood.  He’s supposedly voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, and has talked about “merging brands” with Marvel (whatever the hell that means).  Diesel may be content to be part of ensemble films, but since the most successful thing about Riddick is that it got made, he could be looking for another solo franchise.

About a year ago, Diesel signed on to play the lead in a film adaptation of the TV show Kojak.  The series ran from 1973-1978, and starred Telly Savalas as New York City Police Department Detective Lieutenant Theo Kojak.  The tough but good-hearted cop was a colorful character and returned to TV in 2005 as a short-lived series starting Ving Rhames.   So what are Diesel’s thoughts on the film adaptation?  When asked by a fan on Facebook “what director would you like to work soon?” he replied, “Kojak… New York… Ang Lee…”  Hit the jump for more.
