With Guardians of the Galaxy crossing $700 Million at the global box office (and the Blu-ray hitting on December 9th) it’s definitely a positive thing that writer/director James Gunn is already hard at work on the sequel, in fact he commenced work on the script on the Sunday after the film opened to larger-than-projected box office.  As a side note, back in January who would have thought this film would have been the biggest grosser of 2014 by a country mile?

Anyway, Gunn recently spoke about the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and, while is comments were of course slight (they sort of have to be at this point) they’re interesting enough to warrant a small mention.  Hit the jump for more on Guardians of the Galaxy 2.  The original film incidentally will have a ton of special features when it does get that Blu-ray release in December. Definitely picking that one up.

James Wan Says FAST & FURIOUS 7 Was the “Hardest” Film He’s Ever Made; Also the One He’s Most Proud Of

This morning I headed down to Lionsgate to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Saw.  As a horror fan it blows my mind that it was ten years ago that writer Leigh Whannell and James Wan changed the genre forever with their tiny, original film.  People forget how innovative the original Saw was (and how comparatively non-violent it actually is when stacked up against the sequels – a few of which I like as well).  While the bulk of our conversation centered around that franchise (in addition to the two other successful horror franchises Wan has helped launch – Insidious and The Conjuring) we did briefly touch on Fast & Furious 7 and how working with that expanded budget compares to the relatively small amount of money Wan spent on Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring.  I found his answer to be refreshingly honest and hopeful, so I’ve decided to share it with you now.

The rest of the interview, which has a lot of really good stuff, will be hitting next week closer to the theatrical re-release of Saw on October 31st.  Wan personally oversaw a new transfer of that film for this release and it apparently looks better than ever.  Hit the jump for his thoughts on Fast & Furious 7.

Rose Leslie Talks HONEYMOON, GAME OF THRONES and Vin Diesel’s THE LAST WITCH HUNTER

rose-leslie-honeymoon-interview

From director/co-writer Leigh Janiak, the indie feature Honeymoon follows young newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie), who travel to a remote lake cottage for their honeymoon with the promise of some private time for romance.  But when Paul finds Bea out in the woods in the middle of the night, her behavior becomes increasingly peculiar and distant, and Paul begins to suspect that something sinister happened.

At the film’s press day, actress Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about how she got involved with the film, what it was like to collaborate with co-star Harry Treadaway, that she loved working in such a stripped down way, doing an American accent, why she liked the ambiguity of what happens to her character, and the experience of working in the cottage.  She also talked about her experience playing Ygritte on Game of Thrones, and her current project, The Last Witch Hunter, in which she’s playing a witch opposite Vin Diesel.  Check out what she had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Vin Diesel Reveals Very First THE LAST WITCH HUNTER Image; Production is Underway

Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood and Michael Caine in a Breck Eisner film?  I’m in!  When news first broke that Summit Entertainment snatched up Cory Goodman’s The Last Witch Hunter pitch in a mid-six figure acquisition, it did catch my eye, but the premise alone wasn’t enough to spark much interest.  However, as the creative team started to come together, things changed big time.

Diesel is set to play an immortal witch hunter who’s forced to team up with his chief adversary, a female witch, in order to stop the evil covens of New York City from unleashing a plague and decimating humanity.  The project just went into production and Diesel opted to celebrate by sharing the very first photo from the film.  Hit the jump to check out The Last Witch Hunter image.

Vin Diesel Hints at His Involvement in Marvel’s Adaptation of THE INHUMANS

by     Posted 72 days ago

Vin Diesel‘s unwavering self-promotion is at turns oddly endearing and incredibly frustrating.  I admire his conviction at making another Riddick movie, and gobsmacked that he thinks anyone other than him wants a third xXx.  His desire to be in a Marvel movie was also indefatigable as he dropped hints like saying the studio wanted to meet with him, and the two might “merge brands” in 2016.  But so far, his collaboration with the studio has extended to Diesel voicing a character who only says “I am Groot.”  He did a fine job of it, but Diesel wants more.  He wants to be Inhuman.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Review

guardians-of-the-galaxy-review

Leading up to Guardians of the Galaxy, there’s been a persistent question among pundits, analysts, and even Marvel fans about whether or not the studio’s new film is “too weird”.  Somehow, we’ve come to expect a guy who can invent anything, an alien Norseman with a magic hammer, and a guy who was put into suspended animation instead of dying of hypothermia are all credible protagonists worthy of their own movies.  But once you go into outer space and feature a talking raccoon, all bets are off. Writer-director James Gunn has no problem convincing us of his space oddities as he taps into universally beloved qualities like humor, warmth, and a sense of adventure.  Although he’s still a little trapped by some familiar plot points and a few underdeveloped main characters, these are minor qualms in a movie that’s a total blast.

Vin-Diesel-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-interview

Opening this weekend is director James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.  As most of you know, the story follows five intergalactic misfits—Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper)—as they set out to protect a powerful and mysterious orb from the villainous Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace).  Loaded with great performances, an extremely funny script, and some fantastic action sequences,Guardians of the Galaxy should be a big hit with moviegoers and it helps to explain why Marvel was so quick to announce that a sequel is coming July 28, 2017.

At the recent Los Angeles press day, I landed an exclusive video interview with Vin Diesel.  He talked about his reaction to watching Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time, taking his kids to the screening, the status of another Riddick sequel, upcoming projects like Kojak, his Hannibal trilogy, xXx 3, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is such a fun ride, with great action, plenty of laughs, a ton of heart and perfect choices in music.  It will have you singing along, and cheering for the snarky Rocket Raccoon and a talking tree named Groot.

During a conference at the film’s press day actors Chris Pratt (“Peter Quill”/”Star-Lord”), Zoe Saldana (“Gamora”), Dave Bautista (“Dax the Destroyer”), Michael Rooker (“Yondu”), Benicio Del Toro (“The Collector”) and Vin Diesel (“Groot”) were joined by director James Gunn to talk about what attracted them to this project, how liberating it is to not have to fit into the regular Marvel scheme of things, why Yondu is such a bad-ass, fighting the right attitude for Peter Quill/Star-Lord, the emotional journey of the story, the process for having the music organically come from and compliment the story, the physicality of these roles, why the movie references Kevin Bacon, and everyone’s favorite song on the soundtrack.  Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

With just a little over a week to go until its big release, early Guardians of the Galaxy reactions are coming in and, as we told you yesterday, they’re tremendously positive.  There’s always been a chance this whole thing could go south considering it’s such an unusual and highly stylized Marvel film, but ever since that very first trailer dropped back in February, it really did seem like James Gunn pulled it off.  At this point we’ve got loads of quality promotional material to further prove Guardians could be a standout, all of these adoring first reactions, and now we can add a solid extended clip from the film to the collection, too.

The piece is nearly five minutes long and gives us some serious background on all five main characters and also an extensive look at what goes down when the team is thrown in The Kyln.  Guardians of the Galaxy arrives in theaters in 3D on August 1st.  It stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee PaceKaren GillanGlenn CloseBenicio Del ToroMichael RookerJohn C. Reilly, and Peter Serafinowicz, and features the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.  Hit the jump for the Guardians of the Galaxy extended clip.

While not every project in Hollywood actually comes to fruition, despite the years of development put into it, there are a few projects that Vin Diesel has been attached to for some time that he remains focused on getting made.  It may have taken nine years, but the Chronicles of Riddick follow-up Riddick finally came to pass last year, and now Diesel says he’s tackling two long-talked-about projects in the near future.  Steve recently spoke with Diesel in anticipation of the release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, in which he voices Groot, and the actor revealed his next three projects.  After the fantasy-actioner The Last Witch Hunter, which Diesel is making next, the actor says he will move on to Kojak, followed by xXx 3.

It’s only two weeks or so until director James Gunn’s Marvel tentpole Guardians of the Galaxy hits US screens (it opens internationally a few days prior).  As you can tell by my reaction to the footage that was screened from the film last week, I’m quite excited for this picture (you should also check out the new TV spots that hit yesterday if you missed them).  Today sees the release of three character posters.  John C. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Footage Review: Evan’s Reaction to Marvel Screening 17 Minutes of Footage

by     Posted 107 days ago

guardians-of-the-galaxy-footage-review

I’ve been more excited about Guardians of the Galaxy than I have most other Marvel films for some time now.  I’m a huge fan of director James Gunn (Slither, Super) and the potential for strong authorial voices gets me more excited for tentpoles (see also Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 and Edgar Wright’s unfortunately cancelled take on Ant-Man).  While I generally like Marvel movies, there’s something about the humor in all of the Guardians of the Galaxy promos that I’ve seen that has colluded with my fandom of Gunn to raise my expectations for this film.  So when an invitation came my way to preview 17 minutes of the film in 3D IMAX this evening at the TLC Chinese Theater, I leapt at it despite the fact that I would essentially just be watching 17 minutes of footage I’d be seeing in a more complete context within a matter of weeks.

Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee PaceKaren GillanGlenn CloseBenicio Del ToroDjimon HounsouJohn C. ReillyMichael RookerPeter Serafinowicz, and the voices of Bradley CooperVin Diesel, and Josh Brolin.  It opens in 2D and 3D on August 1st.  Hit the jump to read my Guardians of the Galaxy footage reaction!
