97 Original Scores Up for Oscar; DRIVE and ATTACK THE BLOCK Ruled Ineligible

by     Posted 2 years, 252 days ago

As the 84th Academy Awards move closer, we’re starting to get a better sense of how things will pan out. We recently shared the 39 songs that will contend for the Best Original Song category, and now the Academy has announced the 97 original scores eligible for the Best Original Score award. AMPAS is notoriously picky when it comes to eligibility in this category, and as we feared the scores for both Drive and Attack the Block have been deemed ineligible. Also disappointing is the ineligibility of Alexandre Desplat’s mesmerizing score for The Tree of Life.

While it’s upsetting to see some of the year’s best work side-lined, there’s plenty to be happy about. I was a huge fan of Howard Shore’s work in Hugo and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as well as The Chemical Brothers’ brilliant work in the criminally underseen Hanna. Hit the jump for the full list, as well as who I think will make the cut.

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS Blu-ray Review

water-for-elephants-robert-pattinson-slice

Water for Elephants is tasteful. Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz are all good actors, Francis Lawrence knows his way around a camera, and screenwriter Richard LaGravenese knows his way around a sentence. It’s an adaptation of a popular novel about a circus show. One of those books that find an audience with women, is often well regarded, but not taken all that seriously.

Robert Pattinson is famous for Twilight. But like any actor he wants to show that he’s not just the captain of Team Edward. Christoph Waltz won an academy award, but he needs to show he can work in Hollywood, so why not play a slightly less evil character than last time? Reese Witherspoon is a bankable actress – or at least used to be – and who else are you going to cast if Angelina Jolie is out of your price range? Francis Lawrence is a director who wants to show he’s not just a genre filmmaker after Constantine and I Am Legend. You can clearly see everyone’s motivations for making the movie. That the end results are half-cooked is also not surprising. Our review of Water for Elephants on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

On Easter weekend the animated hit Rio managed to hold on to its number one perch for a second weekend in a row with an estimated $26.8 million.  The padding between Fox’s birds and the Tyler Perry’s bawd was pretty slim, however.  In second place Madea’s Big Happy Family was right behind Rio with an estimated $25.8 million.

Title Weekend Total
1 Rio $26,800,000 $81.3
2 Madea’s Big Happy Family $25,800,000 $25.8

Friday Box Office – RIO Still Flying High with $10.7 Million; MADEA’S BIG HAPPY FAMILY a Close Second

by     Posted 3 years, 131 days ago

Hollywood is definitely going to have its second ‘up’ weekend in a row come Sunday.  It’s another 2011 milestone!  Credit that success to Fox’s Rio, whose Friday-to-Friday estimate of $10.7 million was slightly higher than its debut one week ago, and to Tyler Perry’s latest, Madea’s Big Happy Family, which was just behind Rio with a Friday estimate of $10.5 million from 2,288 locations. Madea is not expected to match Perry’s past Easter weekend debuts, which means that Rio will most likely see its second weekend at number one.  Fox is back at number three with Water for Elephants.  The adaptation of the bestselling novel debuted with an estimated $7 million from 2,817 locations and should come in line with projections which put it in the mid teens or slightly above for the Easter weekend.  Finally, Disney Nature continued its tradition of Earth Day releases with African Cats.  They didn’t score the huge debut they saw with Earth, but Cats was cunning enough to make it into Friday’s top five with an estimated $3.3 million from just 1,220 locations.

Title Friday Total
1 Rio $10,700,000 $65.2
2 Madea’s Big Happy Family $10,500,000 $10.5
3 Water for Elephants $7,000,000 $7
4 Hop $4,200,000 $92.2
5 African Cats $3,300,000 $3.3

From the best-selling book of the same name, Water for Elephants tells the story of veterinary student Jacob Jankowski (Twilight star Robert Pattinson), who has to drop out of school after the unexpected death of his parents, and ends up jumping a train that happens to belong to the Benzini Bros. Circus. When he is discovered, his skills with the animals are put to use and he soon meets star performer Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), who is also the wife of the Big Top’s often violent and abusive owner, August (Christoph Waltz). The bond between Jacob and Marlena forms over their mutual admiration of the animals, but also develops into something deeper, as the two see a second chance at happiness in each other.

During a press conference at the film’s press day, Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon and director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) talked about what made them want to do a film of this time period, working with an elephant as a co-star, and how the showmanship and mystery of the circus is similar to making movies. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Starring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, and Christoph Waltz, Water for Elephants tells the story of a vet school student (Pattinson) who falls in love with an already married circus performer (Witherspoon) while caring for one of the show’s elephants. Having not read the book, I can’t offer a ton of insight as to what you can expect from the film adaptation. That said, I have been impressed with some of the cinematography on display in its theatrical trailer.

If you’d like to know a little more about the project, hit the jump to check out a set visit video courtesy of Entertainment Tonight. Slight Spoiler Alert: ET is very interested in finding out how attracted Witherspoon and Pattinson are to each other.

Robert Pattinson Twilight Eclipse slice

Earlier today was the first major press day for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.  While other press tours for the Twilight movies have started in other countries, for Eclipse, Summit elected to start to press tour here in Los Angeles.  Thankfully, I got an invite, and after the jump you can watch the Robert Pattinson press conference on video!  While studios are usually very strict about recording devices during press conferences, Summit allowed us to record the press day anyway we wanted.  Big props to Summit for letting us use video!

Anyway, during the almost 30 minute press conference, Rob talked about what drives him as an actor, what was it like to work more closely with Taylor Lautner in Eclipse, what’s up with his music and will he contribute anymore of it to future Twilight soundtracks, does he check the fansites, how much does he prepare for his scenes with Kristen Stewart, he talked about his future projects like Bel Ami, Water for Elephants, Unbound Captives, training for the fight scenes, when did he find out Breaking Dawn would be two films and has he talked to Bill Condon, and SO much more.  If you’re a fan of the Twilight franchise and Rob Pattinson, you’ll love the video.  Take a look:

UPDATE: I’ve also posted the full transcript, so you can either read or watch the interview!
