THE BETTER ANGELS Trailer Offers a Look at the Early Life of Abraham Lincoln Through a Terrence Malick-esque Lens

Amplify has released the first The Better Angels trailer for writer/director A.J. Edwards’ poetic drama about the early life of Abraham Lincoln.  From the opening seconds of this trailer, the film gives off a very strong Terrence Malick vibe, and indeed Malick produced the feature, as Edwards previously worked as an editor and second-unit director on some of Malick’s films.  Beyond the obvious comparisons, the black-and-white film looks to be a rather haunting and lyrical drama about the early life of one of the most influential U.S. Presidents in history, and as a fan of the Malick style myself, I’m looking forward to seeing what the full feature has in store.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW Recap: “Edward Mordrake (Part 1)”

american-horror-story-freak-show-logo-slice

This episode of American Horror Story: Freak Show could have been better.  “Edward Mordrake (Part 1)” is clearly being used as a build-up to next week’s “Edward Mordrake (Part 2).”  We’ve got characters doing things that are in stark contrast to what previous episodes have established, there are loads of great scenes but few have satisfying payoffs and, overall, the first part of the coveted Halloween episode just isn’t all that scary.  But does that mean I didn’t enjoy it?  Absolutely not.  The entertainment value of American Horror Story: Freak Show is through the roof.  At this point, no logic or structural issue stands a chance against the outlandish fun that’s to be had with these characters in this setting.  Hit the jump for more in my American Horror Story: Freak Show recap.

New INTERSTELLAR Trailer Says Goodbye to Our Solar System

We’ve been loading up on Interstellar promotional material lately and Paramount just topped it all off with an especially riveting new trailer.  Matthew McConaughey recently described the film as “the grandest adventure I think any of us will ever see on film,” and based on what we get in this promo, I’m inclined to agree.  We’ve been trying to put the pieces of the narrative together since day one and even though this trailer answers more questions and reveals more story information than ever, it winds up sparking so much more curiosity and intrigue in the process.  We caught a glimpse of it in one of those new TV spots, but the detail that still catches my eye is that robot walking around the planet with McConaughey’s character and his team.

Hit the jump to check it out for yourself in the brand new Interstellar trailer.  The film arrives in theaters in 35mm and 70mm IMAX on November 5th (click here to find out your closest film projection location) and everywhere else on November 7th, and also stars Anne HathawayJessica ChastainCasey AffleckMichael Caine, David OyelowoWes BentleyJohn LithgowEllen BurstynTopher GraceDavid GyasiMackenzie FoyBill IrwinTimothée Chalamet and Matt Damon.

Let the countdown to the freak show begin!  We’ve known American Horror Story: Freak Show is on the way for quite some time now, and guessed it was coming well before that, but now we’ve got an official date and time to look forward to – Wednesday, October 8th at 10pm on FX.

There are always plot rumors out there for highly anticipated movies and TV shows, but when the possibility of a circus/freak show-themed American Horror Story popped up, it was just too good to brush off.  Even though that made the official announcement more of a told-you-so type of thing, it’s hard to imagine anything else topping that concept.  Hit the jump for more on American Horror Story season 4.

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Christopher Nolan’s new film Interstellar.  The sci-fi pic stars Matthew McConaughey and revolves around a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole “to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”  Though this teaser trailer features very, very little footage from the still in-production film, it’s a surprisingly moving piece that draws on the human spirit’s drive to keep moving forward.  I’ll say no more and let you experience the teaser for yourself, but the prospect of seeing Nolan further explore these themes in the full film is definitely exciting.

Hit the jump to watch the teaser Interstellar trailer.  The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Michael Caine, David Oyelowo, Wes Bentley, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, Topher Grace, David Gyasi, Mackenzie Foy, Bill Irwin, Timothée Chalamet, and Matt DamonInterstellar opens November 7, 2014.

Marvel Considering Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY? Wes Bentley and More Reportedly Added to Star-Lord Shortlist

The casting process on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy continues to move right along, and even though the studio has yet to announce any actors joining the project, they are reportedly looking at some rather interesting names to fill out the cast.  We’ve previously reported on a number of shortlists of actors that Marvel and director James Gunn have been considering for the lead role of Star-Lord, a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship.  Everyone from John Krasinski to Jim Sturgess has been linked to the role, and now a couple more young male actor names have been added to the list of contenders.

More interestingly, though, is the fact that Marvel is apparently looking into nabbing a couple of high profile comedic actors to bring some levity to the film: Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler.

Though Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated look into the life of President Abraham Lincoln hits theaters later this year, another Lincoln-centric film is already in the works.  Elusive filmmaker Terrence Malick agreed to produce the directorial debut of AJ Edwards, The Green Blade Rises, and now Brit Marling and Wes Bentley have joined the cast in two crucial roles.  Bentley will play the President’s first teacher, while Marling will play Lincoln’s biological mother Nancy, who withstood the challenges of pioneer life.

Diane Kruger and Jason Clarke are already onboard as Lincoln’s step-mother and father, but the role of Lincoln has still yet to be cast.  Edwards worked with Malick as an editor on The New World, The Tree of Life, and To the Wonder, so it’ll be interesting to see how he applies what he learned from Malick on The Green Blade Rises.  Hit the jump to read the press release.

Freida Pinto and Wes Bentley Spotted in New Set Photos from Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS

Filming is currently underway on Terrence Malick‘s Knight of Cups, although the set photos we’ve seen indicate that a better title might be Everybody Loves Christian Bale.  We’ve seen the actor frolicking on the beach with Natalie Portman, giving piggyback rides to Imogen Poots, and now he back to beach-frolicking, but this time it’s with Freida Pinto.  Plot details are being kept under wraps, although the title refers to a tarot card that, when placed upright, represents [per Wikipedia], “change and new excitements, particularly of a romantic nature. It can mean invitations, opportunities, and offers.”  But if the card is reversed, it means “unreliability and recklessness. It indicates fraud, false promises and trickery. It represents a person who has trouble discerning when and where the truth ends and lies begin.”  Sounds like a good premise for a character drama.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos, some of which feature Bale and Wes Bentley, but no frolicking.  The film also stars Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas.

Amanda Seyfried Strips Down for LOVELACE Poster

It’s been a little while since we had a porn star update, so here’s a new poster featuring Linda Lovelace.  Technically, it’s Amanda Seyfried portraying Linda Lovelace in this new poster for the indie biopic, Lovelace.  Splitting hairs.  It’s not as provocative as you might expect, but I’m reserving some hope that, as the movie gets closer to release (unexpected pun!), the material gets more and more risque.  If that wasn’t the plan, it’s something the Lovelace marketing team might want to consider.

Then again, it’s not all about the sex appeal, since a good portion of Lovelace deals with the abusive relationship between the porn star and her husband, Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard).  You can take a look at previously released images, set photos and posters here.  Lovelace also stars Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, Chloe Sevigny, Juno Temple, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and James Franco.  Hit the jump to see the new poster.

THE HUNGER GAMES Review

by     Posted 2 years, 220 days ago

Suzanne Collins‘ young adult novel The Hunger Games isn’t particularly well-written, but it’s undeniably cinematic.  Collins’ paints a strange, brutal world with a hint of social commentary wrapped in a melodramatic love story and intense action.  For the film adaptation, director Gary Ross has created an effective and memorable experience that’s deadly serious and seriously entertaining.  Rather than playing into the blockbuster elements of the novel, he takes a subdued approach where less is more and “more” is darkly and comically grotesque.  The movie remains tied to the weaker aspects of the book, especially the anti-climactic finish and lightweight social commentary, but terrific performances from the cast and Ross’ superb direction paint a potent and compelling picture.
