Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Christopher Nolan’s new film Interstellar.  The sci-fi pic stars Matthew McConaughey and revolves around a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole “to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”  Though this teaser trailer features very, very little footage from the still in-production film, it’s a surprisingly moving piece that draws on the human spirit’s drive to keep moving forward.  I’ll say no more and let you experience the teaser for yourself, but the prospect of seeing Nolan further explore these themes in the full film is definitely exciting.

Hit the jump to watch the teaser trailer.  The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Michael Caine, David Oyelowo, Wes Bentley, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, Topher Grace, David Gyasi, Mackenzie Foy, Bill Irwin, Timothée Chalamet, and Matt DamonInterstellar opens November 7, 2014.

Marvel Considering Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY? Wes Bentley and More Reportedly Added to Star-Lord Shortlist

The casting process on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy continues to move right along, and even though the studio has yet to announce any actors joining the project, they are reportedly looking at some rather interesting names to fill out the cast.  We’ve previously reported on a number of shortlists of actors that Marvel and director James Gunn have been considering for the lead role of Star-Lord, a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship.  Everyone from John Krasinski to Jim Sturgess has been linked to the role, and now a couple more young male actor names have been added to the list of contenders.

More interestingly, though, is the fact that Marvel is apparently looking into nabbing a couple of high profile comedic actors to bring some levity to the film: Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler.

Though Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated look into the life of President Abraham Lincoln hits theaters later this year, another Lincoln-centric film is already in the works.  Elusive filmmaker Terrence Malick agreed to produce the directorial debut of AJ Edwards, The Green Blade Rises, and now Brit Marling and Wes Bentley have joined the cast in two crucial roles.  Bentley will play the President’s first teacher, while Marling will play Lincoln’s biological mother Nancy, who withstood the challenges of pioneer life.

Diane Kruger and Jason Clarke are already onboard as Lincoln’s step-mother and father, but the role of Lincoln has still yet to be cast.  Edwards worked with Malick as an editor on The New World, The Tree of Life, and To the Wonder, so it’ll be interesting to see how he applies what he learned from Malick on The Green Blade Rises.  Hit the jump to read the press release.

Freida Pinto and Wes Bentley Spotted in New Set Photos from Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS

Filming is currently underway on Terrence Malick‘s Knight of Cups, although the set photos we’ve seen indicate that a better title might be Everybody Loves Christian Bale.  We’ve seen the actor frolicking on the beach with Natalie Portman, giving piggyback rides to Imogen Poots, and now he back to beach-frolicking, but this time it’s with Freida Pinto.  Plot details are being kept under wraps, although the title refers to a tarot card that, when placed upright, represents [per Wikipedia], “change and new excitements, particularly of a romantic nature. It can mean invitations, opportunities, and offers.”  But if the card is reversed, it means “unreliability and recklessness. It indicates fraud, false promises and trickery. It represents a person who has trouble discerning when and where the truth ends and lies begin.”  Sounds like a good premise for a character drama.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos, some of which feature Bale and Wes Bentley, but no frolicking.  The film also stars Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas.

Amanda Seyfried Strips Down for LOVELACE Poster

It’s been a little while since we had a porn star update, so here’s a new poster featuring Linda Lovelace.  Technically, it’s Amanda Seyfried portraying Linda Lovelace in this new poster for the indie biopic, Lovelace.  Splitting hairs.  It’s not as provocative as you might expect, but I’m reserving some hope that, as the movie gets closer to release (unexpected pun!), the material gets more and more risque.  If that wasn’t the plan, it’s something the Lovelace marketing team might want to consider.

Then again, it’s not all about the sex appeal, since a good portion of Lovelace deals with the abusive relationship between the porn star and her husband, Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard).  You can take a look at previously released images, set photos and posters here.  Lovelace also stars Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, Chloe Sevigny, Juno Temple, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and James Franco.  Hit the jump to see the new poster.

THE HUNGER GAMES Review

by     Posted 2 years, 29 days ago

Suzanne Collins‘ young adult novel The Hunger Games isn’t particularly well-written, but it’s undeniably cinematic.  Collins’ paints a strange, brutal world with a hint of social commentary wrapped in a melodramatic love story and intense action.  For the film adaptation, director Gary Ross has created an effective and memorable experience that’s deadly serious and seriously entertaining.  Rather than playing into the blockbuster elements of the novel, he takes a subdued approach where less is more and “more” is darkly and comically grotesque.  The movie remains tied to the weaker aspects of the book, especially the anti-climactic finish and lightweight social commentary, but terrific performances from the cast and Ross’ superb direction paint a potent and compelling picture.

Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz and Wes Bentley THE HUNGER GAMES Interview

In The Hunger Games, adapted for the big screen from the best-selling novel by Suzanne Collins, actress Elizabeth Banks plays Effie, the elaborately dressed escort and PR handler for the Games, rock star Lenny Kravitz plays Cinna, the personal Stylist for the Games who becomes a confidante and supporter of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) from District 12, and actor Wes Bentley plays head Gamemaker, Seneca Crane. The trio definitely provide much of the color and many of the moments of humor in the film.

At the film’s press day, the co-stars talked about what attracted them to the project (neither Kravitz nor Bentley had read the book before), the process of deciding on the look for each of their characters, and what each of them personally took from the experience of making the movie. New Character Images and IMAX Banner for THE HUNGER GAMES; Advanced Tickets On Sale Tomorrow and Mall Tour Announced

Calling all Hunger Games fans: we’ve got a good deal of Panem-related material to wade through today. A batch of new images and an IMAX banner from the film have been released, and Lionsgate announced that advanced tickets for the film go on sale tomorrow. Additionally, the studio is planning a national mall tour to give fans a chance to meet the actors from the film at their local shopping mecca. Director Gary Ross, stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and more will be popping up at malls across the country to participate in fan Q&A’s. I’m not exactly sure The Hunger Games needs a mall tour in order to drum up awareness (it feels very 80s pop star), but I guess it gives superfans a chance to interact with the cast.

Hit the jump to check out the images and banner, as well as the full list of participating mall tour cities which includes information on which actors will be at which events. The Hunger Games opens March 23rd.

New HUNGER GAMES Motion Captiol Ads Featuring Stanley Tucci, Lenny Kravitz, and Wes Bentley

The marketing for Gary Ross’ upcoming adaptation of The Hunger Games has been kind of non-stop, with various types of advertising and viral campaigns raising awareness of the highly anticipated pic. Today three motion ads from the Captiol have popped up, giving us new looks at Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickman, Lenny Kravitz as Cinna, and Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane. They’re actually pretty ingenious, as they advertise products that would be found in the image-conscious world of the Capitol such as liquid skyliner and evil-beard trimmers.

For those unfamiliar, The Hunger Games takes place in the post-apocalyptic country of Panem. As a means of reminding Panem’s 12 districts that the country’s government holds all the power, one teenage boy and one teenage girl are randomly selected from each district to participate in a televised fight to the death called “The Hunger Games.” Hit the jump to check out the motion posters. The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, and Elizabeth Banks. The Hunger Games opens March 23rd.

Based on titles alone, Robot & Frank was the most intriguing film out of Sundance.  I was thrilled to hear the movie is great, and star Frank Langella unsurprisingly kills it.  Coming out of the festival buzz, Deadline reports Langella has signed on to his next project, The Time BeingWes Bentley co-stars as Daniel, a struggling artist who accepts a series of bizarre commissions from a dying, eccentric millionaire (Langella): “Daniel can’t quite ascertain whether his new ‘mentor’ is a monster who is intent on destroying Daniel’s life and marriage, or a savior who will teach him the true meaning of art.”  The Time Being will be the directorial debut of Nenad Cicin-Sain.  Cicin-Sain co-wrote the script with Richard Gladstein (Paper Man), who is also producing.

THREE NIGHTS IN THE DESERT Set Visit Preview

I recently visited the set of Three Nights in The Desert, a small film co-produced by New Artists Alliance and Caliber Media, directed by Gabe Cowan and starring Wes Bentley (American Beauty), Amber Tamblyn (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire). The three friends and former band-mates reunite for a weekend in the desert, pushing each other to reflect on the different directions their lives have taken them in.

Look for full interviews as the film develops, but hit the jump for more info on the director’s rational approach to indie-film financing, and more details about how the project came together.

Juno Temple, Wes Bentley, and Sharon Stone Join LOVELACE

by     Posted 2 years, 136 days ago

Juno Temple, Wes Bentley, and Sharon Stone are set to join the cast of Lovelace.  Amanda Seyfried stars as Linda Boreman, aka porn star Linda Lovelace.  The biopic follows Lovelace “through the production of Deep Throat, her abusive relationship with Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard) and eventual spearheading of the feminist anti-pornography movement.”  According to Variety, Temple, Stone, and Bentley will play Lovelace’s best friend, mother, and second husband, respectively.

Andy Bellin (Trust) adapted the screenplay from The Complete Linda Lovelace, a biography by Eric Danville.  Hit the jump for more background on the story.

Adaptable: THE HUNGER GAMES

The process of adaptation is a difficult one.  Yes, the story framework is in place and there’s usually a built-in fanbase as well, but screenwriters must wrestle with what they can include, what they can excise, and what they can change.  A popular adaptation can’t alienate the fans but it also can’t exclude those unfamiliar with the source material.

Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy of young adult novels.  Lionsgate hopes they have the next Twilight on their hands even though the plots of the two books couldn’t be more different.  I’ll break down what works in the book, what will succeed in the movie, and where director Gary Ross will have difficulty in his adaptation.
