First KNIGHT OF CUPS Trailer Reveals Terrence Malick’s Hollywood-Set Drama Starring Christian Bale

If you’re a fan of Terrence Malick, today is a very good day.  Earlier we learned that one of Malick’s films that he shot in 2012, Knight of Cups, is poised to debut at the Berlin Film Festival in February followed by a theatrical release later in 2015, and now the first Knight of Cups trailer has landed online.  The poetic, lyrical nature of Malick is on full display here, but this looks to be a much more hypnotic and chaotic film than his subdued, Oklahoma-set To the WonderChristian Bale leads a stellar cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Antonio Banderas, and Brian Dennehy, and the Hollywood-set story marks a pretty major change of location for Malick, whose past two features have followed the lives of people living in the south/Midwest.  And it goes without saying that Emmanuel Lubezki’s cinematography is simply spectacular.  The slot for my most anticipated film of 2015 has now been filled.

Check out the first Knight of Cups trailer after the jump.  The film also stars Isabel Lucas, Imogen Poots, Wes Bentley, Freida Pinto, Teresa Palmer, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and the voice of Ben Kingsley and will be released in theaters sometime next year.

Zac Efron’s drama set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife has found a home.  Warner Bros. announced today that it has acquired domestic distribution rights to We Are Your Friends, which stars Efron as an aspiring DJ who meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Wes Bentley) who takes him under his wing.  Matters become complicated, however, when Efron’s character falls for James’ girlfriend.  Max Joseph (Catfish: The TV Show) makes his directorial debut on the project, which wrapped production in September.  StudioCanal financed the picture, which also stars Gone Girl actress Emily Ratajkowski as the woman at the center of the dangerous love triangle.  Joseph penned the script alongside Meaghan Oppenheimer.

INTERSTELLAR Review

“Except Christopher Nolan“.  That’s the cinephile’s refrain for a blockbuster marketplace that won’t accept any bold, original ideas.  No one gets to make a blockbuster film unless it’s based on a pre-existing material…Except Christopher Nolan.  Inception embodied this ideal, and following the conclusion of The Dark Knight Trilogy, Nolan was free to travel to anywhere he wanted to go.

His latest destination is Interstellar, a film that certainly breaks away from the traditional blockbuster in the sense of its visuals and turning scientific concepts like relativity, gravity, and time distortion into understandable dramatic plot points.  Unfortunately, for all of the movie’s grandeur, the voyage is constantly beset with clunky exposition, stilted dialogue, maudlin sentiment, and thinly-drawn characters.  Nolan has the power to go wherever he wants, but he leaves the most valuable parts of his story in the dust.

Ryan Murphy Says All Seasons of AMERICAN HORROR STORY Are Connected; Season 5 Clue Featured in Episode 4 of FREAK SHOW

american-horror-story-series-slice

Prior to American Horror Story: Freak Show, I was under the impression that all seasons of American Horror Story were standalone entities, but then news surfaced that Naomi Grossman was set to portray her Asylum character, Pepper, in Freak Show as well.  But even then, it just could have been fun stunt casting.  It certainly made for a good story.  However, Lily Rabe’s casting last week was a game changer.  Rabe is also going to portray her Asylum character, Sister Mary Eunice, in Freak Show for a storyline chronicling how Pepper winds up making the move from Elsa’ Cabinet of Curiosities to Briarcliff.

And the season crossovers don’t stop there.  According to Ryan Murphy, Murder House, Asylum, Coven and Freak Show are all connected.  Hit the jump for more.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW Recap: “Edward Mordrake (Part 2)”

american-horror-story-freak-show-logo-slice

Edward Mordrake may have two episodes of American Horror Story: Freak Show named after him, but all he really does is pump the episodes, and especially “Edward Mordrake (Part 2),” full of exposition.  It’s a noticeably heavy-handed manner of delivering backstory and a bit of a waste of what could have been a creepy, threatening character, but it works well enough because most of that backstory is necessary, highly engaging and also gives some supporting characters the screen time they deserve.  Hit the jump to find out who were Edward Mordrake’s hits and misses in my American Horror Story: Freak Show recap.

THE BETTER ANGELS Trailer Offers a Look at the Early Life of Abraham Lincoln Through a Terrence Malick-esque Lens

the-better-angels-trailer

Amplify has released the first The Better Angels trailer for writer/director A.J. Edwards’ poetic drama about the early life of Abraham Lincoln.  From the opening seconds of this trailer, the film gives off a very strong Terrence Malick vibe, and indeed Malick produced the feature, as Edwards previously worked as an editor and second-unit director on some of Malick’s films.  Beyond the obvious comparisons, the black-and-white film looks to be a rather haunting and lyrical drama about the early life of one of the most influential U.S. Presidents in history, and as a fan of the Malick style myself, I’m looking forward to seeing what the full feature has in store.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW Recap: “Edward Mordrake (Part 1)”

by     Posted 55 days ago

american-horror-story-freak-show-logo-slice

This episode of American Horror Story: Freak Show could have been better.  “Edward Mordrake (Part 1)” is clearly being used as a build-up to next week’s “Edward Mordrake (Part 2).”  We’ve got characters doing things that are in stark contrast to what previous episodes have established, there are loads of great scenes but few have satisfying payoffs and, overall, the first part of the coveted Halloween episode just isn’t all that scary.  But does that mean I didn’t enjoy it?  Absolutely not.  The entertainment value of American Horror Story: Freak Show is through the roof.  At this point, no logic or structural issue stands a chance against the outlandish fun that’s to be had with these characters in this setting.  Hit the jump for more in my American Horror Story: Freak Show recap.

New INTERSTELLAR Trailer Says Goodbye to Our Solar System

We’ve been loading up on Interstellar promotional material lately and Paramount just topped it all off with an especially riveting new trailer.  Matthew McConaughey recently described the film as “the grandest adventure I think any of us will ever see on film,” and based on what we get in this promo, I’m inclined to agree.  We’ve been trying to put the pieces of the narrative together since day one and even though this trailer answers more questions and reveals more story information than ever, it winds up sparking so much more curiosity and intrigue in the process.  We caught a glimpse of it in one of those new TV spots, but the detail that still catches my eye is that robot walking around the planet with McConaughey’s character and his team.

Hit the jump to check it out for yourself in the brand new Interstellar trailer.  The film arrives in theaters in 35mm and 70mm IMAX on November 5th (click here to find out your closest film projection location) and everywhere else on November 7th, and also stars Anne HathawayJessica ChastainCasey AffleckMichael Caine, David OyelowoWes BentleyJohn LithgowEllen BurstynTopher GraceDavid GyasiMackenzie FoyBill IrwinTimothée Chalamet and Matt Damon.
