In today’s opening paragraph I feel compelled to share this bit of wisdom with all of our readers: don’t ever attempt to renovate a house without ample professional help. Never. Just don’t do it. For the past three weeks I, the least handy person you may never meet, have been tasked with doing things that only Bob Vila and a few select others could be reasonably prepared for. It’s an all-consuming, seemingly neverending process that leaves you as the only movie blogger in the history of the civilized world who hasn’t yet seen The Avengers. Trust me, it’s a lonely place…

All warnings aside, in store for you in this week’s Top 5 is the first poster for the Anchorman sequel, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, pleasant news regarding the Blade Runner sequel, interviews with Cameron Diaz, Anna Kendrick and more for the rom-com What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the first trailer for producer Sam Raimi‘s The Possession, and a 4-minute “super preview” of The Amazing Spider-Man. Per usual, a brief recap and link to each falls after the jump.

Friday Box Office – THE AVENGERS Continue to Soar as BATTLESHIP Founders

For the first time this month audiences had more than one new release to tempt them into theatres. Trouble is, no one seemed particularly tempted by the three titles that lined up to take down The Avengers. With an estimated $15.3 million on Friday, the Marvel superheroes are now assured their third weekend title with a projected $55 million. That won’t be a record, but who cares? At $1.048 billion worldwide, the film is already Disney’s highest-grossing release of all time. In second place, Universal’s Battleship took in an estimated $9 million from its 3,690 locations for a projected $26 million first weekend. Not only is that well below expectations for the pricey live-action boardgame, it’s also less than John Carter earned for its debut back in March. Draw your own conclusions. After opening to $4.1 million on Wednesday, Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator took in an estimated $5.7 million on Friday towards what should be a $16 million first weekend. Finally, What to Expect When You’re Expecting saw an estimated $3.9 million from 3,021 locations on Friday. Not exactly what Lionsgate was, um, expecting from their ensemble comedy.  Full details tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 The Avengers $15,300,000 $417.3
2 Battleship $9,000,000 $9
3 The Dictator $5,700,000 $12.7
4 What to Expect When You’re Expecting $3,900,000 $3.9
5 Dark Shadows $3,800,000 $41.9

New Trailer for WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING

by     Posted 2 years, 146 days ago

what-to-expect-when-youre-expecting-trailer-slice

A new trailer for the star-filled feature version of What to Expect When You’re Expecting has arrived. When a trailer begins with the voiceover, “Having a baby can be a real mother,” it can only go uphill. The movie is essentially Valentine’s Day with babies, as we see a bunch of famous people deal with the ups and downs of pregnancy. Chris Rock and Rob Heubel continue to be the highlights of the footage, and this trailer inexplicably gets rid of all the female characters halfway through. I’m no expert, but I’m fairly certain that ladies are a vital necessity for the production of little humans.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The cast also includes Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jennifer Lopez, Rodrigo Santoro, Joe Manganiello, Chace Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Brooklyn Decker, Thomas Lennon, and Wendy McLendon-Covey. What to Expect When You’re Expecting opens on May 12th.

Lionsgate has released five new character posters for What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the ensemble comedy about “five couples whose intertwined lives are turned upside down by the challenges of impending parenthood.”  It’s a great way to see pregnant versions of Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Cameron Diaz, Brooklyn Decker, and Anna Kendrick next to sassy taglines like, “If I knew I’d have a rack like this, I would’ve gotten knocked up years ago.”  I kid, but I think there’s a chance this could be good.  Chace Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock, Rodrigo Santoro, Ben Falcone, Joe Manganiello, and Rob Huebel also star. What to Expect When You’re Expecting opens on May 12, 2011.  The posters are after the break.

First Trailer for WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING Starring Elizabeth Banks and Cameron Diaz

by     Posted 2 years, 236 days ago

The first trailer for What to Expect When You’re Expecting has debuted and it’s actually not bad at all. Given the film’s large ensemble and multiple storyline style, I figured we were in for the Valentine’s Day of baby movies, but What to Expect actually looks like a solid comedy. The standouts here are Elizabeth Banks and Rob Heubel, with the latter playing a man who really, really shouldn’t be a father. Unlike Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve, this movie appears to be actually telling real stories with interesting characters, with some solid laughs thrown in for good measure.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The cast also includes Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Rock, Chace Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Brooklyn Decker, Thomas Lennon, and Wendy McLendon-Covey. [Update: We've been sent a high resolution image from the film, which is now included after the jump].

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this evening. First up, THR reports that Gerard Butler is set to star in Millennium Films’ adaptation of Noah Boyd’s The Bricklayer. The thriller tells the story of a former FBI agent who is brought in by the bureau to help track down a criminal gang that’s demanding escalating ransom payments. Hanna Weg (Enigma) is writing the script, and Butler will also be producing the film alongside Alan Siegel and Danielle Robinson.

Additionally, Facts of Life star Kim Fields will make her feature film debut in Kirk Jones’ What to Expect When You’re Expecting. The film is the latest in the new genre of “lots of celebrities have minimal screentime in a movie that has interconnected stories,” and follows four different couples through the ups and downs of pregnancy. THR reports that the actress will play a social worker who helps a couple adopt. Fields joins Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Dennis Quaid, Anna Kendrick, Chace Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Brooklyn Decker, Wendy McLendon-Covey and Rob Huebel. The film opens May 11th, 2012. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel The Bricklayer.
