I’ve decided to use this weekend’s release of Darren Aronofsky‘s Noah as an opportunity to reflect on the director’s most soul crushing work to date: his adaptation of the Hubert Selby Jr. novel of the same name, Requiem for a Dream. While I’d list Black Swan as my favorite Aronofsky film, Requiem stands alone as a devastating look at the nature of addiction that, by its end credits, will assure you that nothing decent will ever happen to you again. The film netted the great Ellen Burstyn her sixth Academy Award nod while Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Marlon Wayans provided equally powerful performances as heroin addicts whose trajectories only bend downwards. While its story and characters offer little to be optimistic about, Requiem all but cemented Aronofsky’s place among the most skilled and uncompromising filmmakers of his generation. If you haven’t already, check out the film on Amazon Instant Video where it’s available to stream. Just be sure you’re not already in an emotionally fragile state or else you’re in for a long night.

Aronofsky reflections aside, this week’s Top 5 highlights the first teaser trailer for director Jonathan Liebesman‘s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, interviews for and Matt’s review of Noah, the new trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Sabotage interviews and Matt’s review, and Steve’s coverage of CinemaCon from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

Paramount Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for director Jonathan Liebesman’s (Battle: LA) reboot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  There’s not a lot of footage here, so it’s tough to make a judgment call beyond being unsure who this movie is for.  It looks like they’re trying to make it in the vein of Transformers, but robots are easy compared to something organic.  Is this meant to appeal to the nostalgia of older viewers?  Are the turtles too creepy for kids?  I don’t know what Liebesman is going for, and overall this feels like an announcement trailer.  Most people don’t know a new Ninja Turtles movie is coming.  Now it’s a matter of evaluating the response.  What’s yours?  Sound off in the comments.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, click here for 15 screengrabs, check out what screenwriter André Nemec had to say about the film, and if you missed Steve’s CinemaCon coverage, check out his video blog recap of the footage and interview with Will Arnett.  The film also stars Megan Fox, Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, Noel Fisher, Danny Woodburn, and William FichtnerTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens on August 8th.

Shortly before introducing the world premiere of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles teaser trailer at CinemaCon yesterday in Las Vegas, I managed to speak with Will Arnett on the red carpet for a few minutes.  In the film, Arnett plays Vernon Fenwick, who works alongside Megan Fox (April O’Neil).  During the brief interview, Arnett talked about how he got involved in the film, what it was like working for director Jonathan Liebesman, the first image released from the movie, and if there is any chance Batman could be the lead in The LEGO Movie sequel (he did the voice).  Hit the jump to watch.

While Steve’s at CinemaCon in Vegas, checking out all the latest movie posters and such, he came across this first-look image from Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  It doesn’t feature any of the title characters, but we do get a close-up of Megan Fox’s reporter character, April O’Neil, and her cameraman, Vernon Fenwick (Will Arnett).  It’s likely a screengrab from the film’s first trailer, which Paramount is debuting during their presentation at the Con, and should be hitting the web anytime now.

Alan RitchsonPete PloszekJeremy Howard, and Noel Fisher are assuming the physical roles of the mo-capped heroes and the cast also includes William Fichtner as Shredder, and Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld) as Splinter.  Produced by Michael BayTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th.  Hit the jump to check out the image.

Watch: THE LEGO MOVIE Blooper Reel

Outtakes or blooper reels from animated films most often feel a bit contrived given that the “flubs” have to be planned out and created by animators, but that doesn’t make them less entertaining.  In the case of The LEGO Movie, a “blooper reel” has been released online that appears to be a mix of crafted flubs and genuine outtakes from the voice actors that were subsequently animated.  If you’re looking for a little more from Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s excellent and delightful film before you catch a second (or third, or fourth) viewing, this blooper reel should sufficiently tide you over.

Hit the jump to watch the outtake video.  The LEGO Movie is currently playing in awesome theaters everywhere.

With directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller helming The Lego Movie, I was confident the animated film was going to be something special.  But I will fully admit, the film exceeded my lofty expectations.  Loaded with great animation, a fun story, humor for both kids and adults, and an insanely addictive song (Everything is Awesome) that you’ll be singing again and again, The Lego Movie is truly something special and I’m beyond confident both audiences and critics are going to fall in love with the film.  If you’re not familiar with the movie, it’s been made using a mix of stop-motion and CG animation, and the pic revolves around Emmett (voiced by Chris Pratt), an ordinary construction worker who finds himself anointed “The Special”, a master builder who will lead a band of rebels to save the world from the evil President Business (Will Ferrell).  The film also features the voices of Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Charlie Day, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Alison Brie, and many others.

With the film hitting theaters on February 7th, Warner Bros. has provided us with nine clips.  Hit the jump to check them out.  You can also click here for all our previous Lego Movie coverage which includes posters, images, trailers, and more.

Morgan Freeman Literally Reads the Phonebook in Featurette for THE LEGO MOVIE; Listen to Tegan & Sara’s “Everything Is Awesome”

by     Posted 87 days ago

the-lego-movie

Those unfamiliar with anything but the title may be automatically wary of The LEGO Movie, but this latest featurette for the film does its darndest to get across the very specific—and fantastic—sense of humor of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.  Instead of having the actors sit and talk about voicing their characters, this nearly four-minute featurette is entirely animated and features each character talking a bit about the film and which “actors” are portraying them.  It’s wonderfully goofy, and if you’ve ever wanted to test out the hypothesis that Morgan Freeman could make even the phonebook sound interesting, this is your chance.  We also get a look at some of the colorful new LEGO worlds that the film explores, so it’s definitely worth a watch.  Additionally, the original song “Everything Is Awesome” by Tegan & Sara and The Lonely Island has been released in its entirety, and it makes a swell earworm for the day.

Hit the jump to watch the featurette and to listen to “Everything Is Awesome”.  The film also features the voices of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Charlie Day, and Alison Brie.  The LEGO Movie opens in 2D and 3D on February 7th.

Director Peter Lepeniotis’ animated 3D comedy caper, The Nut Job, follows the adventures of Surly (voiced by Will Arnett), an enterprising but mischievous squirrel who’s banished from his park by a villainous raccoon (voiced by Liam Neeson) for destroying the winter food supply.  To help his pals in the park survive the winter, he plans a heist of his town’s biggest nut shop and takes the ragtag crew he’s assembled on an action-packed adventure they’ll never forget.  Opening January 17th, the film also features the voices of Katherine Heigl, Brendan Fraser, and Maya Rudolph.

At a recent press conference in Los Angeles, Arnett and Heigl talked about creating the voice for their animated characters, the recording process, collaborating with Lepeniotis and the animators, their favorite character in the movie, doing a small independent film compared to a big studio production, their children’s reaction to seeing their work on screen, when they first knew they wanted to become actors, their advice for parents whose children want to act, and the importance of teamwork, redemption and family.  Heigl also revealed her upcoming feature comedy, Jenny’s Wedding.  Hit the jump to read the interview.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for writers/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s new film The LEGO Movie.  The story centers on Emmet (Chris Pratt), an average LEGO minifigure who is mistaken for the most extraordinary person in the LEGO world and is looked upon to save his people from an evil tyrant named President Business (Will Ferrell).  This trailer had me laughing out loud multiple times, which is no surprise when you consider that it comes from the hilariously twisted minds of Lord and Miller, the duo behind 21 Jump Street and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.  Pratt feels like pitch perfect casting as the film’s optimistic hero, and this trailer highlights some excellent use of LEGO’s more recognizable IP’s like Batman and Wonder Woman.  Is it February yet?
