The superhero arms race continues.  Warner Bros. announced its slate of DC Comics adaptations through the year 2020 recently, and then earlier this week Marvel Studios responded by announcing its own slate through the year 2019.  As WB has now started moving forward with a number of upcoming films, rumors have begun to swirl about the third DC movie in line after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, the Wonder Woman movie set for release in 2017.  Specifically, these new rumors claim that the first Wonder Woman will be a prequel set in the 1920s and will kick off a trilogy of Wonder Woman films.  More after the jump, including the film that Gal Gadot recently had to pass on due to her DC obligations.

Superhero Movie Release Dates: From 2015 to 2020

superhero-movie-release-dates

There’s no denying that the most popular genre around these days is that of the superhero movie.  Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy proved that comic book adaptations could be just as dramatic and heavy as non-genre films, Marvel Studios jumpstarted a massive interconnected series of superhero movies that were significantly more colorful and humorous, and audiences have been turning out to both kinds of superhero movies in droves.  With every major studio now working to turn its own comic book properties into the next big thing, it’s sometimes tough to keep track of what’s coming out when, who’s in it, and how it fits into the overall picture.  Not to worry, though, because we here at Collider have you covered.

After the jump, you’ll find a comprehensive guide of superhero movie release dates for every major comic book adaptation on the calendar, going all the way up to the year 2020.  Moreover, we’ll be updating this guide regularly with the most current information, so if you’re ever looking for the latest news on a specific film, you can come right back here for a quick overview.

Warner Bros. Looking for Female Director to Helm WONDER WOMAN

by     Posted One week ago

wonder-woman-movie

The superhero movie boom has been happening for years now and only one superhero film has had a female director: Lexi Alexander‘s Punisher: War Zone.  And the budget for that film was drastically lower than the majority of superhero pictures.  Patty Jenkins (Monster) came close to directing Thor: The Dark World, but she and Marvel couldn’t come to terms, so they went with Alan Taylor instead.

It’s absurd and sad that, even beyond superhero films, female directors almost never get to take on a blockbuster property.  There are legions of incompetent male directors who are given hundreds of millions of dollars to blow on a waste of time, but incredibly talented female directors are relegated to indies, rom-coms, and TV shows.  It’s time to break through that glass ceiling, especially with superhero movies since we’re going to be getting so many of them.  Fittingly, that time may have finally come with Wonder Woman.  Hit the jump for more.

Wonder Woman’s BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Origin Revealed; Ben Affleck Is “Team Batfleck”

by     Posted 18 days ago

batman-v-superman-wonder-woman

Wonder Woman is a popular character by name but not by history.  If you were to ask someone about Batman’s origin story, they would probably know his parents were murdered so he learned crime was bad.  If you were to ask someone about Superman’s origin story, they would probably know that his planet blew up and he was raised by good-hearted Midwesterners.  But ask people about Wonder Woman’s origin, and you’ll probably get confused looks.  It’s the result of Wonder Woman lacking the ubiquity of her male counterparts, and to be fair, plenty of non-geeks are probably just as ignorant of many superheroes’ origins.  However, those superheroes are rarely set next to two of the most famous superheroes of all-time.

Because Wonder Woman’s origin is mostly unknown, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has room to play with it as opposed Superman or Batman where the confines are strictly mandated by geek culture.  Geeks don’t care as much about Wonder Woman, and so her original origin is being tossed out for something more “modern” and “realistic”.  Hit the jump for more.

Four DC Comics Movies URL Registrations Hint at Warner Bros.’ Upcoming Plans

It’s no secret that Warner Bros. is in the midst of building its own DC Comics Movies slate, crafting its answer to the highly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe.  They’ve already staked out release dates for nine upcoming DC Comics movies, and the in-production Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is looking like one massive Justice League prequel with appearances scheduled for Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and more.  The question on everyone’s minds, though, is in what order will Warner Bros. be introducing more standalone DC comics movies?  Well an answer may have surfaced by way of four URLs that Warner Bros. just registered, which just so happen to match up to four very specific DC comics properties.  More after the jump.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Release Date Moved Up to March 25, 2016; WB Dates 9 Untitled DC Films and 2 Event Movies

The Marvel/DC release date showdown has come to an end, and it appears that Marvel has come away the victor.  Marvel Studios staked out the May 6, 2016 weekend a while ago for an “Untitled Marvel Movie,” but when Warner Bros. went looking for a new release date for its Man of Steel follow-up, it decided to plant its flag on May 6, 2016 as well with the thinking that Marvel would subsequently move.  Except Marvel didn’t move, it doubled down by announcing that Captain America 3 would be its May 2016 movie, which was certainly a big deal coming off the stellar opening weekend for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

And so now Warner Bros. has flinched, but instead of delving deeper into the summer, the studio will be trying to kickstart the blockbuster season incredibly early by setting the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice release date on March 25, 2016.  If that wasn’t enough, Warner Bros. has announced release dates for 9 untitled DC films and 2 “event films”.  More after the jump.

During Warner Bros.’ Comic-Con presentation in the convention center’s famed Hall H today, a crowd-pleasing presentation kicked things off with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  While we’ve previously seen Henry Cavill in costume as Superman, along with Ben Affleck in costume as Batman, this presentation was the first glimpse of Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman armor.  Needless to say, it looks like the Internet’s knee-jerk reaction to Gadot’s casting was premature; no surprise there.  They also screened some footage that apparently wowed the crowd, which Matt covers in his panel recap.

Also starring Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Tao Okamoto, and Laurence Fishburne.  Batman vs. Superman opens May 6, 2016.  Hit the jump to check out the new Wonder Woman image.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN Rumors: Wonder Woman’s Costume, Lex Luthor’s Motives, Batman’s Lake Cottage, and More

Last week, we had some Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice rumors regarding Lex Luthor’s hairline and attitude.  Today, more Batman v Superman rumors have gone online covering not only Luthor but also more details about Wonder Woman, her costume, weapons, how she’ll be integrated into the story, plus a little bit of  background on this latest big-screen interpretation of Batman.  Leading off with Luthor, JoBlo reports that this is a familiar Lex Luthor: an egomaniac who can’t stand the notion that there’s someone out there more powerful than him.  He then tries to persuade people to dislike Superman, and is moderately successful.  Some people see Superman as a savior, and others see him as “the ultimate threat”.  And if you’re wondering about the hair, JoBlo says Lex Luthor starts out with long, red hair.

Hit the jump for more Batman v Superman rumors including Wonder Woman’s costume, her weapons, how she factors into the plot, and miscellaneous Batman details.  The film stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Tao Okamoto, and Laurence FishburneBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens May 6, 2016. Warner Bros.’ DC Film Slate May Include JUSTICE LEAGUE, WONDER WOMAN and THE FLASH/GREEN LANTERN Movies in 2017

In relation to Marvel Studios’ well-oiled machine, much has been made of the fact that Warner Bros. has yet to roll out a cohesive superhero universe making use of its extensive DC Comics archives.  After last year’s Man of Steel though, the studio appears to have gotten themselves together.  Instead of another Superman sequel, Zack Snyder is gearing up to direct Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for a July 2016 release, which he will shoot back-to-back with a full-blown Justice League movie.  However, a new report claims to reveal the studio’s tentative schedule for its DC properties, including a 2017 release date for Justice League, a Wonder Woman movie, and a The Flash/Green Lantern team-up film.  More after the jump.

First Look at Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet from BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

by     Posted 169 days ago

invisible-jet

Earlier this week, director Zack Snyder revealed a peek at the Batmobile for Batman vs. Superman (unofficial title) before unveiling Ben Affleck as Batman standing next to the front of his famous vehicle.  Today, we’re getting a look at Wonder Woman’s invisible jet.  I know Snyder has his fans, but I am so sick and tired of his empty visuals.  Yet again, it’s style over substance.  And I’m not even a die-hard Wonder Woman fan, so I can only imagine how those people must feel.  It’s bullshit that that the design isn’t even close to what it looks like in the comics.  Maybe it would have been better if they had her fly under her own power so we don’t have to look at this ugly thing.

Hit the jump to get a better look at Wonder Woman’s invisible jet.  The film also stars Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Tao Okamoto, and Laurence FishburneBatman vs. Superman opens May 6, 2016.

Zack Snyder Talks BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN; Gives Thoughts on Seeing Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman Together for the First Time

by     Posted 197 days ago

batman-vs-superman-zack-snyder

Even though Zack Snyder currently can’t really say anything incredibly substantial about Batman vs. Superman (unofficial title), he can talk around it, and that’s close enough for most fanboys.  In a recent interview with Forbes, Snyder gave his thoughts on both characters and seeing them together on screen.  Personally, the most disconcerting part of the interview is when the interviewer says, “Superman is kind of the ideal of what we’d like to be, and Batman is kind of rooted in what we are. He reflects what we are, so to speak,” and Snyder replies, “Oh, 100%. And I think that’s at the heart of that, you know.”  I could not disagree more with that response.  I think an “idealist versus pragmatist” approach is understandable, but please don’t lump me in with a billionaire who treats a crime-ridden city like a playground so he can constantly work though his childhood trauma.

Hit the jump for more of what Snyder had to say about the Batman vs. Superman costumes, seeing Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman together on screen for the first time, when we might start seeing official images, and more.  The film stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, and Laurence FishburneBatman vs. Superman opens May 6, 2016.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: WAR Blu-ray Review

If you simply can’t wait to see DC’s most famous superheroes team up to do battle on the big screen, then you’ll want to check out Justice League: War, the latest effort from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment.  The animated feature adaptation of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s 2011 “Justice League: Origin” storyline finds the famous heroes battling crime separately before they officially team up.  When a powerful new threat invades the Earth, the heroes must put aside their differences in order to work together and save the world.  It’s a worthy addition to the series of animated features, and a great place-holder between live-action movies.

Featuring the voices of Alan Tudyk, Jason O’Mara, Michelle Monaghan, Christopher Gorham, Justin Kirk, Shemar Moore, and Sean Astin, Justice League: War is now available on Blu-ray.  Hit the jump for my review.

collider-top-5-slice

For the third year in a row I find myself looking through previous Top 5 installments on the last Saturday of the year, trying to whittle the hundreds of stories I’ve covered in the past 52 weeks down to the five that I find most interesting, important, popular, etc. At its most basic, this is just an exercise of further reducing a list that I’ve been trimming and prepping on a weekly basis all year long. That’s likely the most boring/tedious way of looking at it, but true nonetheless.

At its best, I see the “End of the Year Edition” as a Collider time capsule of sorts. A snapshot that is in no way comprehensive enough to properly acknowledge the amount of time, work, thought, travel, money, etc. that goes into making this site what it is. And yet, representative enough of our content as a whole that someone who stumbles upon it can see what we were trying to accomplish: to cover the things that we’re passionate about in the most interesting and sincere way possible and to completely and utterly dominate the Internet by way of Star Wars and superhero movie casting rumors. Keep reading for the five stories/pieces of content that in many ways defined our 2013.

Gal Gadot Comments on Playing Wonder Woman in BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

We’re over a year and a half away from seeing Batman vs. Superman on the big screen, but Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) is already fielding questions about her role of Wonder Woman in the superhero sequel.  In a recent interview with Israel’s entertainment show, Good Evening with Guy Pines, Gadot talked about learning she had won the part, fan criticism about her physicality, and the training regimen she’s about to take on.

Also starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Amy Adams, Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman is due out July 15, 2015.  Hit the jump to see what Gadot had to say.
