Zack Snyder Talks BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN; Gives Thoughts on Seeing Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman Together for the First Time

Even though Zack Snyder currently can’t really say anything incredibly substantial about Batman vs. Superman (unofficial title), he can talk around it, and that’s close enough for most fanboys.  In a recent interview with Forbes, Snyder gave his thoughts on both characters and seeing them together on screen.  Personally, the most disconcerting part of the interview is when the interviewer says, “Superman is kind of the ideal of what we’d like to be, and Batman is kind of rooted in what we are. He reflects what we are, so to speak,” and Snyder replies, “Oh, 100%. And I think that’s at the heart of that, you know.”  I could not disagree more with that response.  I think an “idealist versus pragmatist” approach is understandable, but please don’t lump me in with a billionaire who treats a crime-ridden city like a playground so he can constantly work though his childhood trauma.

Hit the jump for more of what Snyder had to say about the Batman vs. Superman costumes, seeing Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman together on screen for the first time, when we might start seeing official images, and more.  The film stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, and Laurence FishburneBatman vs. Superman opens May 6, 2016.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: WAR Blu-ray Review

If you simply can’t wait to see DC’s most famous superheroes team up to do battle on the big screen, then you’ll want to check out Justice League: War, the latest effort from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment.  The animated feature adaptation of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s 2011 “Justice League: Origin” storyline finds the famous heroes battling crime separately before they officially team up.  When a powerful new threat invades the Earth, the heroes must put aside their differences in order to work together and save the world.  It’s a worthy addition to the series of animated features, and a great place-holder between live-action movies.

Featuring the voices of Alan Tudyk, Jason O’Mara, Michelle Monaghan, Christopher Gorham, Justin Kirk, Shemar Moore, and Sean Astin, Justice League: War is now available on Blu-ray.  Hit the jump for my review.

For the third year in a row I find myself looking through previous Top 5 installments on the last Saturday of the year, trying to whittle the hundreds of stories I’ve covered in the past 52 weeks down to the five that I find most interesting, important, popular, etc. At its most basic, this is just an exercise of further reducing a list that I’ve been trimming and prepping on a weekly basis all year long. That’s likely the most boring/tedious way of looking at it, but true nonetheless.

At its best, I see the “End of the Year Edition” as a Collider time capsule of sorts. A snapshot that is in no way comprehensive enough to properly acknowledge the amount of time, work, thought, travel, money, etc. that goes into making this site what it is. And yet, representative enough of our content as a whole that someone who stumbles upon it can see what we were trying to accomplish: to cover the things that we’re passionate about in the most interesting and sincere way possible and to completely and utterly dominate the Internet by way of Star Wars and superhero movie casting rumors. Keep reading for the five stories/pieces of content that in many ways defined our 2013.

Gal Gadot Comments on Playing Wonder Woman in BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

We’re over a year and a half away from seeing Batman vs. Superman on the big screen, but Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) is already fielding questions about her role of Wonder Woman in the superhero sequel.  In a recent interview with Israel’s entertainment show, Good Evening with Guy Pines, Gadot talked about learning she had won the part, fan criticism about her physicality, and the training regimen she’s about to take on.

Also starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Amy Adams, Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman is due out July 15, 2015.  Hit the jump to see what Gadot had to say.

Adrianne Palicki Looks Back at Starring in the Failed WONDER WOMAN Pilot; Will Return to Play Lady Jaye in G.I. JOE 3

A couple years ago, David E. Kelley (The Practice) attempted to launch a Wonder Woman series for NBC, and what we saw looked unimpressive to say the least, although two people who saw the pilot were mixed on the result.  All I can say is that the costume looked laughably cheap (NBC changed it after the negative reaction from fans), and it didn’t bode well for the series. However, Adrianne Palicki wasn’t a terrible choice for the role at least in terms of her physique and ability to do stunts.  In a recent interview, Palicki talked about the chance to play the famous superhero, and why she’s a little grateful the show didn’t get picked up.

This week in Blu-ray/DVD recommendations I confidently offer up writer/director Maggie Carey‘s The To Do List for your consideration. Starring Aubrey Plaza, Johnny Simmons, Bill Hader, and many more, The To Do List delivers consistent laughs and, at times, an all too realistic depiction of the awkwardness of “first times”. As an added bonus, I imagine viewers who grew up in the 90′s will appreciate the fashion and accessory induced nostalgia the film provides (the sound of a Trapper Keeper ripping open is music to my ears). Moreover, having a story like this told from a female perspective is refreshing to say the least. I don’t want to oversell it as being a comedic game-changer but The To Do List is a solid feature debut for Carey and Plaza is excellent as the overachieving lead who approaches sexual experience the only way she knows how: like it’s a class final that’s worth 75% of your overall grade.

Home entertainment recommendations aside, this week’s Top 5 highlights the first trailer for director Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Out of the Furnace interviews with Christian Bale and more, Gal Gadot landing the role of Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman, Sundance 2014 announcing its competition lineup along with a slew of first/new images from many of the entries, and the possibility of X-Men: Apocalypse hitting theaters in May 2016. Ladies and gentlemen, we have our Wonder Woman.  It’s been clear that Warner Bros. is ramping up its DC presence in the upcoming Man of Steel follow-up Batman vs. Superman, and rumors have swirled that Wonder Woman would be introduced in the film along with Ben Affleck’s Batman and a few other comics characters.  A report surfaced last month that Olga Kurylenko (Oblivion), Elodie Yung (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), and Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) were auditioning for the female lead in director Zack Snyder’s upcoming film, but the nature of the role was being kept under wraps.  Well now not only do we know which actress won the role, but also that the identity of the character is indeed Wonder Woman.  Hit the jump for more.

Earlier today, we reported that Olga Kurylenko (Oblivion) was rumored to have screen-tested for the role of Wonder Woman.  Now, we’re getting some additional reports that say the same, but also include Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) and Elodie Yung (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) in the mix.  It’s important to note that this trio has or will test for the female lead in Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman.  While some are quick to jump to the conclusion that the role is that of Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, it’s equally possible that it will end up being the love interest for Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck), not that those two characters must be mutually exclusive.  Hit the jump for more.

When Batman vs. Superman was announced at Comic-Con this past summer, the crowd went absolutely nuts.  For the first time, DC Comic’s most popular superheroes would share the screen in a blockbuster picture.  That is legitimate cause to be excited.  But in the months since then, such a pairing is no longer good enough.  A couple weeks ago, Warner Bros.’ Greg Silverman gave the slightest of indications that Wonder Woman could be in the movie.  And apparently, that’s still not enough for sites that are so desperate for scoops they’ll take whatever information they can regardless of its proximity to the truth.

Hit the jump for rumor-bait regarding Dick Grayson being in the movie, and Olga Kurylenko screen-testing for Wonder Woman.  Batman vs. Superman opens July 17, 2015.

Warner Bros. has been one of the braver studios when it comes to taking chances on risky projects.  It’s paid off in a big way lately with Gravity, and they also distributed Pacific Rim as well as last year’s Cloud Atlas.  The studio can afford to take these risks because they’ve got some heavy hitters in the franchise department, most notably their DC superheroes.  Superman got back on his feet and in the sky with Man of Steel, and Batman will be returning for 2015′s Batman vs. Superman.  In addition to bringing back the Dark Knight, the studio has also managed to revive Harry Potter with the spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. reiterated its pledge to make a Wonder Woman movie.  Arguably the most famous female superhero, the Amazonian princess still hasn’t gotten a feature film, and I doubt it will happen any time soon if Warners is still waffling between telling her story in movies or on TV.  But they have fielded pitches from creative folk, and last night at an event for the Blu-ray/DVD release of The Heat, director Paul Feig revealed he recently gave the studio his idea for what a Wonder Woman movie should be.

Read Leaked Script for George Miller’s JUSTICE LEAGUE; WB Reiterates Intention to Create WONDER WOMAN Movie or TV Series

This past summer’s Man of Steel marked a big step forward for Warner Bros. with regards to its DC Comics properties.  Following Marvel’s massive success with interconnected superhero movies, WB has been trying to find a way to take a similar approach to its DC characters.  Green Lantern was a swing and a miss, and Christopher Nolan made it very clear that his Dark Knight Trilogy was a standalone set of films not set within a larger universe.  But with Man of Steel, WB finally has a hit with a rebooted DC character, and the studio is moving forward with a follow-up that brings Batman into the fold.

Obviously the endgame is a Justice League movie, but WB has been toying with that idea for years.  Director George Miller came extremely close to getting his iteration of Justice League in front of cameras in 2007, but the plug was prematurely pulled.  However, a leaked version of the script for Miller’s film has now landed online.  Hit the jump for much more.

Having missed Sofia Coppola‘s The Bling Ring during its theatrical run, I made sure to pick it up on Blu-ray when it hit shelves this past week. As much as I was looking forward to it, though, I have to say I was let down. Aside from a spot-on soundtrack and some solid performances from its young cast (Taissa Farmiga‘s turn stands out to me as particularly strong), the pic often feels as vapid and generally aimless as the events it depicts. The film is ripe for commentary on our societal fascination with all things celebrity. There are also occasional nods, especially during the film’s night club scenes, to the idea that social media is both a means and an end to human connection. That said, Coppola never truly explores either of these ideas and instead elects to present the story in a vérité style that feels content to simply observe. For me, the end result is a picture that has so much to talk about and yet ultimately says very little.

My “Blu-ray Disappointment of the Week” discussion aside, this week’s Top 5 highlights the latest Star Wars: Episode VII rumors that put Saoirse Ronan up for a lead role, a look at some of our favorite options for female driven superhero movies, the first trailer for Alexander Payne‘s Nebraska, Grand Theft Auto V‘s unprecedented opening day, and a new Cinemath installment that takes a look at the Emmys by the numbers. As you might expect, a brief recap and link to each of the above resides after the jump.

The movie-going audience has spoken.  Movies with female protagonists are becoming more popular in this day and age.  With recent financial successes, such as Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy’s The Heat, turning studios’ heads, its time to take the plunge and start giving more superheroines a time to shine.  While female comic book protagonists starring in their own movies is hardly new (see Catwoman, Elektra, Supergirl), there’s a wealth of heroines still out there that can hold up a movie just as well as their male counterparts.
