Some days you just want to walk down the street in your bright-red wig and blue body paint without the whole world staring at you; if you’re Jennifer Lawrence, you can get away with the first part, at least.  Lawrence was recently seen on the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past in her rather revealing “costume” for her shape-shifting character, Mystique.  The body paint doesn’t leave much to the imagination, which you can see for yourself in this new batch of set photos.  Also appearing on set are director Bryan Singer and a mystery guest who some are theorizing to be the super-strong and bionically-enhanced Misty Knight.

Also starring Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy, Peter Dinklage and Evan Peters, not to mention returning franchise members Ian McKellan, Patrick StewartHugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Daniel Cudmore, and Halle Berry, X-Men: Days of Future Past opens July 18, 2014.  Hit the jump to see the new set images.

TOP 5: THE INTERNSHIP, INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2, Set Images Galore from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, THE PURGE, 101 Best Written TV Series of All Time

For all of the uneasiness I felt watching The Internship play as a not so subtle promo for Google’s portfolio of services (what in the hell is Google Wallet?), the movie painted a dichotomy that I found interesting. While far from perfect, I thought the film did a nice job of contrasting the eternal optimism of a couple Gen X’ers with the often harsh practicality and cynicism I see embedded in myself and many of my fellow Millennials. Although this is hardly the platform from which to dive into a generational debate, The Internship at least introduced the idea that belonging to a generation that has had the wealth of the world’s knowledge at their fingertips for a good portion of their lives (not to mention video games and the lack of a military draft) faces a whole new set of unique challenges and insecurities. At the same time, it also sent an oft-overlooked truth that we (Millennials) don’t know it all, haven’t seen it all, and the “Culture of Meh” that we often embrace is cynical bullshit that I can only hope life experience will help pull us out of.

In addition to my “meh” soapbox, this week’s Top 5 offers The Internship interviews with Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, and Rose Byrne, the first trailer and a set visit recap for director James Wan‘s Insidious: Chapter 2, a truckload of set images from X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Purge interviews with Ethan Hawke and more, and a look at the WGA’s list of the “101 Best Written TV Series of All Time”. Check out a brief recap and link to each after the jump.

New Images from the Set of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Reveal Nicholas Hoult’s Redesigned Beast Makeup

by     Posted 13 days ago

One of the earliest official set images that director Bryan Singer revealed over the course of production on X-Men: Days of Future Past was a peek at some concept art for the character of Beast, played by Nicholas Hoult.  While we saw Hoult go full beast-mode in X-Men: First Class, the concept art hinted at a bit of a redesign for the character in Days of Future Past.  Sure enough, a batch of unofficial set photos for DOFP reveal that the character does indeed look fairly different from what we saw in the first film, as we get a look at Hoult in his brand new Beast makeup.  Moreover, the images reveal a pretty intense-looking throwdown between Beast and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto.

Bryan Singer Unveils First Official Look at Michael Fassbender on the Set of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

by     Posted 14 days ago

Another day, another X-Men set photo.  Director Bryan Singer’s latest image from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past marks our first official look at Michael Fassbender reprising his role as Magneto, following a batch of amateur set photos that were snapped a week ago.  It appears that Fassbender’s Magneto has developed his mutant powers quite significantly in the time since the events of First Classas the character looks to be levitating in this most recent set image.

New Image from the Set of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Reveals President Nixon [Updated with another Image]

by     Posted 16 days ago

Director Bryan Singer has unveiled a new image from the set of the superhero sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.  While we don’t get a look at any of the many, many mutant characters from the film, this image does give us our first look at President Nixon in the Oval Office, surrounded by his advisors.  Singer told us earlier this year that Nixon would be a character in the 1970s-set pic, adding that it would be “an interesting casting choice.”  It’s tough to make out the actor playing Nixon in this image, but it’s definitely clear that something occurs during the 70s portion of Days of Future Past that catches the attention of the Commander in Chief.

Hit the jump to check out the image.  The film also stars James McAvoyMichael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Peter Dinklage, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Omar SyDaniel Cudmore, Booboo Stewart, Fan Bingbing, and Halle Berry.  X-Men: Days of Future Past opens July 18, 2014. [Update: Singer tweeted another set photo today with the note "GOOD MORNING VIETNAM!!!"  You can check it out after the jump]

Before reporting on what Patrick Stewart told attendees at Comicpalooza about X-Men: Days of Future Past, you should really watch this moving and personal response he gave to fan regarding his childhood and dealing with domestic abuse.  Moving on to lighter material, Stewart talked about Bryan Singer‘s upcoming X-Men sequel.  He told fans, “I think it is going to certainly be the X-Men of all X-Men pictures, and one doesn’t want to tempt fate, but perhaps also the blockbuster of 2014.”  While he’s obviously doing to talk up his movie, it does fall in line with Hugh Jackman‘s recent comments that Days of Future Past will be like The Avengers of X-Men movies.  That’s not too much of a surprise since Days of Future Past will mash up characters from the first three movies with X-Men: First Class and then add even more mutants.

Hit the jump for what Stewart had to say about Professor Xavier’s return and more.  The film also stars James McAvoyMichael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Ian McKellanHugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Omar SyDaniel Cudmore, Booboo Stewart, Fan Bingbing, and Peter Dinklage. X-Men: Days of Future Past opens July 18, 2014. [Warning: possible spoilers after the jump.]

Opening this weekend, in limited release, is director/co-writer Zal Batmanglij’s (Sound of My Voice) eco-terrorist thriller The EastBrit Marling co-wrote the script with Batmanglij and stars as an undercover operative for an elite private intelligence firm who infiltrates a domestic terrorist organization in order to protect her corporate clientele.  Once she starts living as part of the anarchist collective, though, she finds that her loyalties aren’t as solid as she believed them to be and becomes conflicted when she starts falling for the charismatic leader (Alexander Skarsgard).  The impressive ensemble cast also includes Ellen Page, Patricia Clarkson, and Julia Ormond, and you can click here to watch the trailer and here is Matt’s review.

Last week I landed an extended video interview with Ellen Page.  She talked about  wanting to work with Marling and Batmanglij, the parallels of the film to real world issues, whether or not the script changed during production, the process of shooting the film in only four weeks, premiering at Sundance, and much more.  In addition, Page talked about the popularity of Inception and if she’s still asked about it, does she censor herself on Twitter, X-Men: Days of Future Past and having Bryan Singer tweet out a picture of her on set, upcoming projects like Freeheld and the video game Beyond: Two Souls, doing a voice on Family Guy, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Groovy New Set Photos from 1970s Setting of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Peter Dinklage

Director Bryan Singer has been happy to release plenty of set photos from X-Men: Days of Future Past, but that doesn’t mean they won’t come from other sources.  Today, set photos have leaked of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender walking to set in their 1970s threads.  We can also Peter Dinklage in a business suit, which, coupled with Tuesday’s set photo from Singer, almost confirms that he’s playing Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels.  It’s also worth noting that Fassbender’s costumes shows he won’t be in full Magneto regalia throughout the movie.  He can wear a scarf and sideburns with the best of ‘em.

Latest Image from the Set of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Reveals the Presence of Trask Industries

by     Posted 22 days ago

Director Bryan Singer has shared another image from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but this time it’s not a first look at a cast member in costume or even a piece of the set.  Instead, Singer has unveiled a rather curious logo on the back of one of the extras’ costumes: that of Trask Industries.  While we know that there are a bevy of returning characters from the previous four X-Men films, word has been mum regarding the villainous role that Peter Dinklage is taking on.  While initial speculation had Dinklage pegged for the character of Puck, it’s looking more and more likely that Dinklage might actually be playing the nefarious Bolivar Trask.  Hit the jump for more, including the new set photo.

Evan Peters to Play Quicksilver in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST; What Does This Mean for THE AVENGERS 2?

Though production is already well underway on director Bryan Singer’s sequel X-Men: Future Past in Canada, a late addition to the cast has been made.  Singer announced today on Twitter that American Horror Story star Evan Peters will play Quicksilver in the star-studded superhero pic, though this may make things quite complicated for Marvel’s The Avengers 2.  In comics lore, Quicksilver is a mutant capable of moving and thinking at superhuman speeds.  He also happens to be the son of Magneto, along with his twin sister Scarlet Witch.  While this is certainly a fascinating cast addition to the time-bending X-Men: Days of Future Past, it could very well affect Marvel’s Avengers sequel as Joss Whedon only recently revealed that he’s written both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into his script.  Hit the jump for more.

First Image of Jennifer Lawrence in Full Mystique Makeup in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Bryan Singer is at it again.  The X-Men: Days of Future Past director has revealed yet another behind-the-scenes peek at a character from the upcoming sequel, this time giving us a look at Jennifer Lawrence in her full body makeup as Mystique.  The filmmaker describes the character as “vengeful” in the tweet, suggesting that the complicated relationship between Lawrence’s Mystique and James McAvoy’s Professor X from First Class will continue in this follow-up.  We just recently shared what Ellen Page had to say about returning for DOFP and having her picture Tweeted by Singer, so if you missed that story click here to catch up.

Ellen Page Talks Returning for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, Working with 3D Cameras, and More

by     Posted 30 days ago

As you’re probably well aware if you follow director Bryan Singer on Twitter, production is currently underway on the highly ambitious sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.  While the film is very much a sequel to 2011’s X-Men: First Class, it also bridges the gap between the younger versions of the X-Men characters and their grown-up counterparts that were seen in the previous three X-Men films.  The story of Days of Future Past involves time travel and alternate realities, and Singer has amassed an all-star ensemble of actors that includes a large amount of the original trilogy cast in addition to the First Class stars.

One of the returning characters in DOFP is Ellen Page’s mutant Kitty Pryde, who was last seen in X-Men: The Last Stand.  Pryde plays a pretty substantial role in the comics storyline for DOFP, and so Pryde is expected to be a crucial character in Singer’s film.  Steve recently spoke with Page in anticipation of the upcoming thriller The East, and the actress talked a bit about returning for Days of Future Past, Singer’s propensity for sharing character first-looks on Twitter, shooting in 3D, and more.  Hit the jump to see what she had to say.

Bryan Singer Shooting X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST in 3D and Simul-Cam

by     Posted 43 days ago

Back in December, we learned that X-Men: Days of Future Past would (sadly) be in 3D.  It’s not too surprising since 3D is currently paying huge dividends from international box office.  It’s still a boost in the U.S. but the novelty has cooled as audiences have discovered that most movies aren’t exactly Avatar when it comes to 3D.  Hopefully, international audiences will make this discovery soon, and we’ll be done with this broken technology that rarely adds anything and is undermined by cheap chain theaters who don’t want to spring for bulbs that would show 3D at its proper brightness.

Thankfully, Bryan Singer is at least shooting X-Men: Days of Future Past in 3D rather than post-converting it.  He also tweeted that he’ll be using Simul-Cam.  For those who don’t know, Simul-Cam allows the director to see a rough digital version of the motion-capture figures.  Could this be for the Sentinels?  Hit the jump to see an image of Singer’s “friggin mission control”.  X-Men: Days of Future Past opens July 18, 2014.

Director Bryan Singer has revealed yet another image from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past.  While Singer previously gave us early looks at Halle Berry as Storm, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and Shawn Ashmore as Iceman, today he’s offering up a tantalizing image of Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine in the X-Men sequel.  We don’t really get a good look at the character (we’ll get plenty of that with this summer’s The Wolverine), as Singer just provides an image of Jackman’s back while the actor gets fitted for his X-Men costume.  The storyline of Days of Future Past involves alternate timelines and dystopian futures, which is how we get the melding of Singer’s X-Men cast with the characters from X-Men: First Class.  Presumably he hasn’t begun shooting the past-set sequences yet, since we’ve only seen images of characters from the first three X-Men films.
