Simon Kinberg Talks X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Budget and Opening Scene; Says Opening Introduces Refugee Mutants

The superhero sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past is certainly one of the more ambitious undertakings of the past few years.  Not only does the film mix the original X-Men cast with the younger X-Men: First Class cast, but it also introduces the long-awaited Sentinels for the first time, takes place in two time periods, and essentially chronicles a mutant apocalypse.  As such, it wasn’t a huge shock when reports surfaced that Days of Future Past might have the largest budget of any Fox film except for Avatar.

When Steve recently sat down with Days of Future Past writer/producer Simon Kinberg, he addressed the film’s budget and also talked about the scope of the pic, specifically describing the opening scene of the movie.  The pic begins in the future as the mutants face extinction, and Kinberg talked about their approach to the cold open of the movie, which introduces a band of refugee mutants (watch the opening here).  Read on after the jump.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Writer/Producer Simon Kinberg Talks Deleted Scenes and Anna Paquin

At WonderCon this past weekend, Steve sat down with Simon Kinberg to talk about the writer/producer’s high-profile projects.  Among Kinberg’s slate of films is X-Men: Days of Future Past, which opens next month.  During their conversation, Kinberg talked about deleted scenes as well as what’s happening with Anna Paquin being in the film.  Four months ago, director Bryan Singer said her scenes had landed on the cutting room floor, but last week a representative for 20th Century Fox said she was still in the movie.  Attempting to clear up the confusion, Steve asked Kinberg about it point blank.  Kinberg replied, “She’s not in the big main sub-plot that we shot with her in it. That’s all I can say.”  When pressed to answer if she at least has a cameo, Kinberg laughed and replied, “I can’t.”

Hit the jump for my theory on how she could still be in the movie, and to learn about the X-Men: Days of Future Past deleted scenes including a subplot featuring the future Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen).  X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 2D and 3D on May 23rd.  For more from Kinberg, click here for what he had to say about The Fantastic Four.

At WonderCon 2014, 20th Century Fox presented select footage from their upcoming sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.  Of course there was the big white elephant in the room – which everyone chose to ignore/avoid (the panel was curiously the only one without any audience questions).  The focus was strictly on the film itself.  Writer/Producer Simon Kinberg was on hand to discuss adapting the beloved comic, getting time travel ‘right’ and making-up for X-Men: The Last Stand.  For the full recap of the footage shown and bullet point highlights of the Q&A, hit the jump.

Bryan Singer’s X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Will Feature Anna Paquin in a “Cameo” Role as Rogue

by     Posted One week ago

When director Bryan Singer was done editing X-Men: Days of Future Past, Anna Paquin had been left on the cutting-room floor.  According to a new report, it now seems as if the mutant known as Rogue has managed to find some screentime in the mutant mash-up after all.  Although the new X film unites the casts of two separate runs of X-Men films, Paquin’s role – which was small to begin with considering all that star power on screen – initially ended up as an editing casualty a few months back.  However, the film’s final trailer included her name in the credits, and now a Fox rep confirms that she’ll indeed have a small part to play.  Hit the jump for more.

Marvel Crossover Alert: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Will Feature X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Clip After the Credits [Updated]

An unexpected Marvel crossover is happening, though it’s not the kind everyone’s been hoping for.  It has been confirmed that a clip from X-Men: Days of Future Past will be play after the credits roll on The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  This is not only weird because previews of upcoming movies usually come before the film and not after, but because X-Men and Spider-Man are owned by separate studios.  Yes, they’re both Marvel comics properties, but Fox retains the rights to all X-Men characters while Sony is in control of all things Spidey.  This has been the principal hurdle preventing possible crossovers between the Spider-Man/X-Men/Avengers universes, since the practicality of any “team-up” film would necessitate a split of profits between major studios.

Hit the jump for more on this odd move, and what it could mean for the future. [Update: A full explanation regarding why Sony agreed to promote Fox's Days of Future Past for free has surfaced.  Details after the jump.]

Following yesterday’s final trailer, two new X-Men: Days of Future Past featurettes have been released.  These featurettes go into the making of two specific scenes.  One featurette focuses on a last-minute addition to the movie where director Bryan Singer felt there needed to be a scene where Magneto (Michael Fassbender) retrieves his helmet, and the other featurette looks at the task of outfitting extras with custom-made 1973 outfits.  They’re both interesting featurettes because they show aspects of filmmaking that some people might not think about.

20th Century Fox has released a final X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer for director Bryan Singer’s superhero “inbetweenquel,” and man does it have everything you could ask for in a mutant-mashup movie.  We get way more setup – along with a look at just how extensive and vital a role Wolverine plays in the plot – with plenty of superpowers on display, promising an action-packed payoff.  The follow-up finds Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) having his consciousness sent back to 1973 in order to help Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and the rest of the X-Men: First Class crew stop Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) and the rise of the Sentinels, giant robots programmed to exterminate mutants.  The trailer does a great job at summing up the premise, which highlights the caper aspect of the plot.  Its only downside is the poor choice of music; even Quicksilver looks good here!

Channing Tatum Says He’s Met about Playing Gambit; Reveals “Everyone” Will Likely Be Back for MAGIC MIKE 2

Though few can rival Matthew McConaughey in the realm of “career renaissance” at the moment, Channing Tatum has undergone a fascinating transformation over the past few years.  He first broke out as a model-slash-actor in the first Step Up, but he began branching out with Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 film Haywire.  He subsequently collaborated with Soderbergh on two more films to excellent results—Magic Mike and Side Effects—and proved himself a very skilled comedic actor with turns in 21 Jump Street and This Is the End.  His upcoming films range from dark drama (Foxcatchter) to hard sci-fi/fantasy (Jupiter Ascending), and there are also a few more exciting prospects on the horizon.

During a recent interview with MTV, Tatum revealed that he has indeed met about playing Gambit in a potential X-Men spinoff film, expressing his love for the character and willingness to tackle the role.  He also provided an update on Magic Mike 2, saying the sequel won’t be as darkly dramatic as Soderbergh’s first film and that he expects the entire cast to return.  Hit the jump for much more.  Magic Mike 2 opens July 3, 2015.

20th Century Fox released a new clip from X-Men: Days of Future Past during tonight’s MTV Movie Awards. This clip gives us a look at the advanced sentinels, but what’s really striking is how director Bryan Singer is using the mutant powers to create some exciting new set pieces.  It’s particularly cool to see Blink’s portal ability and watch Iceman finally ride an ice trail.

Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg Talk X-MEN: APOCALYPSE; Will DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Alter the Timeline?

X-Men: Days of Future Past is still over a month away, but there’s no time to waste!  We already have to start talking about the sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, even though it doesn’t come out for over two years!  Director Bryan Singer and co-producer/co-writer Simon Kinberg spoke to EW about their plans for the film, and revealed that they will be taking elements from the 90s comic book series, Age of Apocalypse, but won’t strictly adhere to the alternate universe aspect of the story.  Kinberg explains that Apocalypse “won’t necessarily create an alternate universe, but there may be some swapping things that I’m playing with.”  Does that mean the time-travel in Days of Future Past might alter our reality to suit the needs of the new story, but not so drastically as to make the world unrecognizable?  Kinberg also goes on to say that “From a visual standpoint it actually may be a bigger movie than Days of Future Past because there’ll be disaster movie imagery, like the title would imply.”  Disaster imagery?  In a superhero movie?  Ridiculous.  People would never go for that.

Quicksilver Runs on Walls in New X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Image; Simon Kinberg Reveals How the Character Fits into the Film

x-men-days-of-future-past-quicksilver

A final trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past is due to arrive next week, but to hold us over, 20th Century Fox has released a new image that focuses on what has become the most talked-about character from the film: Quicksilver.  Evan Peters plays the fast-moving mutant in what amounts to a small supporting role, but reaction to the character’s look has thus far been less than enthusiastic—it doesn’t help that the first footage of Quicksilver in action came in a Carl’s Jr. commercial.  In this new X-Men: Days of Future Past image, we get a peek at Quicksilver’s abilities as he runs alongside a wall, sporting a Pink Floyd t-shirt and a pair of wind-resistant goggles.

Additionally, screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg recently spoke a bit about how Quicksilver fits into the overall story, teasing whether they will address the character’s true parentage in the film and talking about the dual usage of the character in Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Hit the jump to check out the X-Men: Days of Future Past image and quotes from Kinberg.  The film opens May 23rd.

X-MEN Producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg Considering Mystique Spin-Off

Jennifer Lawrence is super-popular and will likely continue to get great roles, but her marquee franchise, The Hunger Games, will wrap up in November 2015 with the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.  If she’s looking for another blockbuster series, she may need to get a little blue.  In a recent interview with EW, X-Men: Days of Future Past producers Lauren Shuler Donner and talked about X-Men spin-offs.  Donner once again talked about her desire to do Gambit and Deadpool movies, and Kinberg added “I love what Jen Lawrence has done with [Mystique], and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”  I agree that Mystique is an interesting character, and Lawrence could potentially do a lot more with the role.  Then again, that was the opinion going into X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and that turned out to be abysmal.  A good concept isn’t close to enough.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is starting to reach The Amazing Spider-Man 2 levels of over-promotion.  The movie is still six weeks away, but Fox is still doing their teasers-for-teasers thing by releasing a sneak peek of a clip that will air during the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday.  Unsurprisingly, the clip features Jennifer Lawrence being badass, and while I have no complaints about that, this is a 10-second preview of a clip that will be 60 seconds at most.  Additionally, Entertainment Weekly has given Days of Future Past the cover to the magazine’s “Summer Movie Preview” issue because up until this point, EW had not covered any movie that’s coming out this summer.

Hit the jump to check out the sneak peek for the clip and the EW cover. Watch: First Look at Evan Peters’ Quicksilver in Action in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Carl’s Jr. Commercial

by     Posted 16 days ago

Studios go to great lengths to ensure that the first time audiences get a glimpse of highly anticipated characters, it’s presented in the best way possible. With the increasing frequency of set photos and videos, it’s becoming nearly impossible to keep things under wraps for long, and studios now have to unveil characters in full costume earlier in order to avoid having the character’s first introduction be without proper lighting or effects.  Much has been made of the flashy Quicksilver costume in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past gleaned in the debut images, but many have been trying to hold judgment until seeing the character in the context of the film.  Well, that’s now been tainted by a Carl’s Jr. commercial.

Yes, our first introduction to Quicksilver (played by Evan Peters) in action is in a commercial for a bacon egg and cheese biscuit, in which the character uses his mutant quickness to gulp down Minute Maid and catch falling bacon.  The results are hilariously terrible, and a little sad.  Hit the jump to take a look.
