Remember that Doctor Strange casting rumor we shared last night?  Buried right in the middle of the original report was another interesting bit of news; Tom Hardy “has recently been courted” for the title role in X-Men: Apocalypse, En Sabah Nur, the guy manipulating the pyramid in the X-Men: Days of Future Past post-credit scene.

On top of that, Warner Bros. is also going after Hardy for a role in the Suicide Squad movie, and apparently he’s close to signing on for that one.  Hit the jump for more on what Hardy may be jumping into next.

Now available on VOD and playing in select theaters is director Jake Paltrow’s Young Ones.  The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where water has become scarce and the only hope for a family becomes an irrigation pipeline that can revitalize their land.  This conflict sets off a battle between the family’s patriarch Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) and a young man (Nicholas Hoult) looking to romance Ernest’s daughter Mary (Elle Fanning).  The film also stars Kodi Smit McPhee as Shanon’s son.  For more on the film, watch the trailer.

Last week in New York City I landed a fantastic interview with Nicholas Hoult.  During our wide ranging conversation we talked about what the past few years have been like, the process of making Young Ones, working with Michael Shannon, what it was like making Mad Max: Fury Road with George Miller, working on Drake DoremusEquals with Kristen Stewart, Comic-Con, X-Men: Apocalypse, Autobahn, Kill Your Friends, if he still has to audition, what he collects, what he’d like to do in the future, and so much more.  If you’re a fan of this very talented actor, I promise you will dig this interview.

Shawn Ashmore Talks THE FOLLOWING Season 3, Having a New Showrunner, X-MEN, and More at NYCC

With The Following showrunner Kevin Williamson leaving after last season to head up his new CBS series, Stalker, the show upped writers Brett Mahoney and Alexi Hawley to executive producers alongside director Marcos Siega, the series’ long-time on-set executive producer.  While some shows suffer when a new leader takes control, The Following wrapped up the long running storyline of the first two seasons in the recent finale, which makes season three able to start anew.  Of course the show will still be dealing with the ramifications of Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), but the new showrunners can take the keys knowing they can plot their own course.

Last weekend at New York Comic-Con, I was able to participate in a roundtable interview with Shawn Ashmore where he talked about The Following season 3.  He discussed how the first episode will reveal the mysterious character in the last scene of season 2, if he likes to know the full arc before the season, his experiences with a new showrunner, his twin brother (who is also an actor), wanting Iceman to be part of X-Men: Apocalypse, and more.  Hit the jump for what he said.

James Marsden Talks THE BEST OF ME, Playing a Romantic Lead Worth Rooting For, HBO’s WESTWORLD, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, and More

Based on the best-selling novel by author Nicholas Sparks, The Best of Me tells the story of two former high school sweethearts, Dawson (James Marsden) and Amanda (Michelle Monaghan), who find themselves reunited after 20 years apart.  In their hometown for the funeral of their beloved friend, they are suddenly forced to face the love that they’ve never forgotten, as well as the life that got in their way.  The film also stars Luke Bracey, Liana Liberato, Caroline Goodall, Sebastian Arcelus, Jon Tenney and Gerald McRaney.

At the film’s press day, actor James Marsden spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about playing the romantic lead that the audience is rooting for (unlike in his last Nicholas Sparks film), sharing the role with Luke Bracey, getting the first kiss right, and how much he enjoyed working with Michelle Monaghan.  He also talked about how he kept his appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past a secret, as well as what attracted him to the highly anticipated HBO sci-fi/Western series Westworld, how Jonah Nolan sold him on the project, the terrific cast (which includes Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Rodrigo Santoro and Miranda Otto), and how he hopes that it goes to series so that he’ll get to do more.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is now available on Blu-ray, and today we’re pleased to bring you an exclusive clip from the special features.  The clip points out fourteen years have passed between the original X-Men and the latest installment, and how that gulf has been bridged not only by the DOFP‘s plot, but by the actors in between.  In the clip, Hoult explains how walking through Cerebro alongside Hugh Jackman is his “childhood come to life”, and Jackman reminds us that the very first thing he ever shot for the X-Men franchise was a scene that took place inside Cerebro.

While Sony Pictures and Marvel might be able to work out a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the bitter rivalry between Marvel and 20th Century Fox continues.  Fox owns the screen rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four, and Marvel has retaliated by undermining those properties.  According to Marvel Comics writer Chris Claremont [via Bleeding Cool], the company has forbidden the creation of new X-Men characters because those characters could then be used by Fox.

Hit the jump for more on how Marvel is trying to hurt Fox’s profits even if it means canceling comics.

Rumor: Fox May Be Developing a Live-Action X-MEN TV Show

x-men-tv-show-live-action

One of my favorite TV shows growing up was X-Men: The Animated Series.  It had all the hallmarks of a great kids cartoon, and the massive lineup of the X-Men themselves seemed like the perfect fit for a long-running television series.  As Marvel Studios has now started dipping its toe into the television waters (on network TV with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter and on Netflix with Daredevil), it appears that Fox may be wanting to bring its own Marvel property to the small screen as well.  If a new rumor is to be believed, 20th Century Fox is looking to bring the mutants back to television by way of a new live-action X-Men TV show.  More after the jump.

Upcoming DEADPOOL Film Will Be Part of the X-MEN Movie Universe

by     Posted 16 days ago

Deadpool may be able to break the fourth wall, but he can’t break free of studios’ needs to cross over their superheroes.  According to writer-producer Simon Kinberg, who is basically the overseer of Fox’s superhero properties—X-Men and The Fantastic FourTim Miller‘s upcoming Deadpool will be part of the X-Men universe.  On the one hand, that’s not completely shocking.  Remember, Deadpool is a spinoff.  It’s actually a spinoff of a spinoff even though it won’t be tied to the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and might even poke fun at that film.  But Deadpool’s power to break the fourth wall makes him an odd choice for a future X-Men movie.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Digital HD Edition Is a Worthy Addition to Your Digital Catalog

In the near future, our world will undergo two drastic changes: firstly, mutants will be hunted to near extinction, and secondly, everyone will download movies to watch in Digital HD.  The heroes of Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past do their best to prevent that first change from happening, but the excellent audio/visual quality of the film’s digital edition will help to ensure that second change still takes place.  Let’s be honest, it’s for the best.  Boasting a clear, crisp picture that is indistinguishable from watching a Blu-ray, along with instant access to special features and behind-the-scenes bonuses, it’s quite apparent that Digital HD downloads are the way of the future.  Hit the jump for my X-Men: Days of Future Past review in this particularly convenient format.

Simon Kinberg Talks X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Blu-ray, the Response to Quicksilver, APOCALYPSE, and George Lucas’ Reaction to STAR WARS REBELS

by     Posted 17 days ago

Arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on October 14th is X-Men: Days of Future Past.  The film was a massive success at the box office, becoming the highest grossing X-Men entry thus far by a wide margin.  Indeed, the production itself was so big that an entire subplot featuring the character of Rogue was removed, with an extended cut of the film—dubbed the “Rogue Cut”—set to be released on home video next summer.  In promotion of this current Blu-ray release, though, I recently got the chance to speak with writer and producer Simon Kinberg about the extras included on the Blu-ray, the Rogue Cut itself, the production of the film, and much more.

During the course of our conversation, Kinberg discussed why he’ll never make a time travel movie again, the audience response to Quicksilver, how the deleted scenes offer fans a glimpse at how different some of the story and characters could have been, what fans can expect from X-Men: Apocalypse, the future of the X-Men franchise, and how input from the actors themselves has been invaluable to plotting out the characters’ upcoming journeys.  Additionally, with Kinberg also writing and producing the animated series Star Wars Rebels, he told me George Lucas’ reaction to seeing the pilot and talked about the season two order from Disney.  Read the full interview after the jump.

Simon Kinberg Says X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Explores More of the Beast and Mystique Relationship; Talks Having Fun with the 80s Setting

X-Men: Days of Future Past was a pretty massive success.  Not only was it the highest grossing X-Men film yet, but at a worldwide total of $746 million, it bested the previous record-holder, X-Men: The Last Stand, by a margin of nearly $300 million.  Needless to say, 20th Century Fox was quick to move on a follow-up, and now we have X-Men: Apocalypse poised to open in theaters on May 27, 2016.  Bryan Singer returns to direct, and as the title suggests the story will revolve around the titular villain wreaking havoc on the X-Men team.  We know that this film will focus on the First Class cast with the addition of Wolverine, and we also know that there’s yet another time jump as this story takes place in the 1980s.

I recently got the chance to speak with Days of Future Past writer and producer Simon Kinberg in anticipation of the film’s release on Blu-ray and DVD on October 14th, and since Kinberg is also returning as co-writer and producer on Apocalypse, he took the time to speak a bit about what fans can expect from the next X-Men film.  In addition to discussing the 80s setting and the large scale of the pic, Kinberg also revealed that the film will get deeper into the relationship between Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and will explore the impact that Charles and Erik, separately, have had on Mystique.  Read on after the jump.

Uncover the Details of RFK’s Secret Mutation Prior to the X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST DVD Release

Thanks to X-Men: Days of Future Past we know that President John F. Kennedy was a mutant.  Magneto (Michael Fassbender) tried to save him, but he was apprehended before he could stop Lee Harvey Oswald’s bullet.  When Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Professor X (James McAvoy), Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Quicksilver (Evan Peters) broke him out of a Pentagon prison, Magneto insisted that he tried to save JFK because he was “one of us.”

What if Robert F. Kennedy was a mutant as well?  According to the X-Men viral campaign, “Kennedy Curse,” he was and he was assassinated because of it.  Hit the jump to see more from RFK’s “Mutants Are Among Us” file.  X-Men: Days of Future Past is currently available digitally and will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray on October 14th.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Will Complete the FIRST CLASS Trilogy; Simon Kinberg Talks Recasting Younger Versions of the Original Characters

It’s hard to imagine an X-Men movie bigger than X-Men: Days of Future Past, what with its multiple timelines, ginormous cast, and time travel shenanigans, but those involved with X-Men: Apocalypse continue to reiterate that it will be the biggest X-Men movie yet.  20th Century Fox recently confirmed that Bryan Singer will indeed be returning to direct, and he’s been hard at work developing the script with DOFP scribe Simon Kinberg and X2 screenwriters Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty.

Filming is scheduled to get underway next spring in anticipation of the film’s May 27, 2016 release date, and to promote the upcoming Blu-ray release of DOFP, Kinberg recently answered a number of fan questions about the franchise.  Chiefly, Kinberg revealed that the thrust of Apocalypse is to “complete the trilogy” that was initially set up in X-Men: First Class.  Hit the jump for much more, including the possibility of seeing younger versions of the original X-Men.

Fox Plans to Release Extended X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST “Rogue Cut” with 10 Extra Minutes Including More Anna Paquin in 2015

X-Men: Days of Future Past is available on Blu-ray and DVD October 14, but 20th Century Fox already has its eyes toward an extended cut next year.  Anna Paquin‘s scenes as Rogue were notably cut from the theatrical release.  Variety reports the “Rogue Cut” will add 10 minutes of extra footage including Paquin’s scenes and additional sequences.  Producer Simon Kinberg remarked on the importance of Paquin’s storyline:

“It’s a big chunk, a substantial part of the movie.  We want to give (fans) the fullest picture of the film—behind the camera, and in front of it… Every movie has scenes that are cut out, but not every movie has scenes cut out with such a beloved character.”

The tentative plan is to release the X-Men: Days of Future Past “Rogue Cut” in the first half of next year, likely Summer 2015.  More after the jump.

Quicksilver Runs to Social Media for the X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Blu-ray

I think many of us can agree that Quicksilver (Evan Peters) was one of the best and surprising aspects of X-Men: Days of Future Past.  20th Century Fox is now seizing on the character’s popularity by sending him on to social media.  Please don’t ask me why a character from the 1970s is on Instagram and Vine.  They don’t show his face in this “post” so I guess you could say it’s an adult Peter Maximoff making sure to Instagram and Vine his movements?  I will say Vine is probably the best medium for someone who does a lot with not much time.  Look for more updates from Evan Peters over the next week.

Hit the jump to check out the video.  X-Men: Days of Future Past will be available on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD on October 14th.  Click here to pre-order.  The film is currently available to own on Digital HD.
