Yvette Nicole Brown Leaving COMMUNITY

Though Community was brought back from the dead this summer after Yahoo Screen picked up the comedy following NBC’s cancellation, it will return with one less original cast member.  TV Guide reports that Yvette Nicole Brown will be departing the show before its upcoming sixth season due to family reasons, as the actress explains that she needs to care for her ailing father.  The split from the show was amicable as executive producers Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna said in a joint statement, “Yvette was an integral part of Community and is irreplaceable. We are sad to see her go and wish her the very best.”  More after the jump.

COMMUNITY Season 6 Will Return on Yahoo Screen

Never underestimate Community’s power of resurrection.  After years facing cancellation on NBC, not to mention a showrunner change that drained the show’s creativity followed by the return of Dan Harmon the following season, the network finally brought the ax down this May, just as the series was on the cusp of fulfilling its unlikely “Six Seasons and a Movie” prophecy.  Talk then turned to a potential season six continuation on Hulu, but that prospect never came to fruition.  Sony TV had a contractual hold on the cast through June 30th, and as the days wound down, it looked like the show might finally be dead.  And then, almost as if on cue, Sony TV announced today that Community season 6 will continue on the interwebs via Yahoo Screen.  Hit the jump for more.

NBC Cancels COMMUNITY after 5 Seasons

community-season-6-cancelled

Alas, it appears that Community will fall short of its “Six Seasons and a Movie” battle cry.  TV Line confirms that NBC has finally cancelled the ratings-challenged sitcom, which went through its fair share of behind-the-scenes drama as well; it’s really almost a miracle it lasted this long.  Though the life of the series was cut short, we can be thankful for five four seasons worth of weirdness that ranged from broad comedy to dark drama.  The show at times verged on being too strange, even for Community, but it was never dull under the guidance of creator/showrunner/mad genius Dan Harmon.  He’s truly one of a kind. COMMUNITY Season 6 Renewal Looking More Likely as Movie Talk Heats Up; Justin Lin Could Direct

The unofficial “Six Seasons and a Movie” slogan for NBC’s beloved if underseen comedy Community began as an offhanded joke by Danny Pudi’s Abed, but it’s now looking like a serious harbinger for things to come.  Though creator Dan Harmon returned as showrunner for the fifth season and things have been on a creative upswing, ratings remain very low.  However, every comedy on NBC’s Thursday night lineup has low ratings.  In fact, after canceling all of its comedy shows besides Community and Parks and Recreation last year, these two remain the only comedies still chugging along on Thursday night as new bets like Sean Saves the World and The Michael J Fox Show have already fallen by the wayside.

As Community continues its low yet consistent ratings course, a sixth season renewal is looking more likely, and given the “Six Seasons and a Movie” moniker, talk of a movie is apparently heating up.  Hit the jump for more.

New Featurette for PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Brings the Myths to Our World

20th Century Fox has released a new featurette for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.  The follow-up finds Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home and other demigods.  This is the first bit of marketing that has me interested in the film since it shows how this time around the mythological aspects carry over into our world rather than mythological creatures simply coming to Percy like in the first movie.  There’s still plenty of emphasis on those creatures, but I like that the sequel looks like it’s willing to have more fun with the myths such as Hermes (Nathan Fillion) running UPS-like delivery service.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette.  The film also stars Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Stanley Tucci, Douglas Smith, Anthony Head, Leven Rambin, Missi PyleYvette Nicole Brown, and Mary BirdsongPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opens in 3D on August 7th.

International Trailer for PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Goes Heavy on Action and Shows Most of the Movie

An international trailer has been released for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.  The follow-up finds Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home and other demigods.  The trailer shows the giant action on display to the point where I’m wondering where a sequel could possibly go.  The villain is the father of the gods, Kronos, with an assist from the previous film’s villain, Luke (Jake Abel).  How do you top the father of the gods?  In any event, like the first movie, there’s a hodgepodge of Greek mythology that brings in the Cyclops, the Golden Fleece, and other icons.  I’m still not sold on the picture even though this trailer basically gives everything away.  But with new director Thor Freudenthal at the helm and no need to go through the origin story, perhaps the sequel will be far superior to the first film.

Watch the Cast of COMMUNITY (and Will Forte) “Audition” for THE WAY, WAY BACK

The upcoming drama/comedy The Way, Way Back marks the directorial debut of screenwriters Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who won the Oscar for writing The Descendants.  However, you might also recognize Faxon and Rash for their acting work, especially the latter as he plays Dean Pelton on Community.  In anticipation of the release of The Way, Way Back, which stars Sam Rockwell, Toni Collette, and Steve Carell and centers on the goings-on at a waterpark, Rash has enlisted a few of his Community cohorts and Will Forte to participate in a humorous “featurette” for the film.  In the featurette, we see the actors auditioning for roles in The Way, Way Back.  While they’re all pretty funny, Forte flat-out steals the show here.

New Trailer for PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Starring Logan Lerman and Nathan Fillion

A new trailer Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters has been released.  The follow-up finds the titular Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home.  Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) takes over directing duties from Chris Columbus this time around, and this trailer actually looks pretty fun.  The creature designs are neat and the action sequences look to be visually exciting, and we also get an extended look at Nathan Fillion as Hermes.  Lerman really impressed with his performance in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and he already looks more in command in Sea of Monsters than he did in the first film.

The first trailer Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters has been released.  The first Percy Jackson received mixed critical response and lukewarm box office, but the sequel seems to be retaining the same tone even though Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) has replaced Chris Columbus at the helm.  Hopefully, the sequel will have a better plot, but since this trailer appears to give away a lot of the movie, it already looks overcrowded with the best moment belonging to Nathan Fillion, who plays Hermes.

COMMUNITY Gets Thursday, February 7 Premiere Date as NBC Announces Full Midseason Schedule

At long last, Community has a premiere date.  The Dan Harmon-less fourth season of the whip smart comedy series was initially set to premiere this month on Fridays, then NBC announced that they were holding the show for an unspecified premiere date sometime in the future.  Many assumed that the network was saving the series as a replacement in the event that one of their new comedy shows got cancelled, but when Animal Practice was given the axe NBC gave the timeslot to Whitney instead.

The cast put together a sort of fan-appreciation video in the wake of the delay news, and now finally some good news has surfaced as star Yvette Nicole Brown announced on Twitter that the fourth season will premiere on Thursday, February 7th at 8pm.  Hit the jump for more. [Update: NBC has confirmed the date with the release of their full midseason schedule, which is included after the jump and announces a break for Revolution, a move for Smash, and more.]

Troy and Abed Try to Explain COMMUNITY’s Lack of a Premiere Date in Cast-Made Video [Updated with Clip from Season Premiere]

Community fans have become experts in the virtue of patience.  We’ve been jerked around so many times regarding when/where/if one of the smartest and funniest shows on TV will actually be on TV that we’re no longer shocked when NBC asks us to “trust them” and wait “a little bit longer” to see new episodes.  The upcoming Dan Harmon-less fourth season of Community was initially slated to begin on October 19th (ie. today), but NBC recently reneged on that decision in favor of holding Community and Whitney as replacements for when their new comedy series go belly-up.  Animal Practice was cancelled yesterday, but NBC naturally decided to replace it with Whitney instead of Community.

The wonderful ensemble cast knows how much the show means to their fans, so they’ve put together a great little video in which Troy and Abed try to explain why the show’s fourth season doesn’t have a premiere date.  The clip is filled with in-jokes and fan appreciation galore.  Seriously, this cast is the best.  Hit the jump to take a look.  Season four of Community premieres someday. NBC Delays COMMUNITY, Moves the Return of WHITNEY to Fridays

NBC continues to kick Community to the curb.  The studio announced today that it would be bumping the season four return of the fan-favorite show from their expected Friday, October 19th date to an unspecified future date.  Sophomore comedy series, Whitney, will also be moving to Fridays, but that show’s debut date is up in the air as well.  NBC cited the need for more time to make a marketing push in the case of each series.

I can’t imagine that Community needs to be marketed any more, with the off-season fireworks of creator/showrunner Dan Harmon being let go; the fourth season will be run by Moses Port and David Guarascio.  I also can’t imagine a scenario in which marketing will get me to watch Whitney.  In the meantime, NBC will air re-runs of the first season of Grimm from 8-9pm on Fridays, which will lead into new episodes of the supernatural procedural.  Hit the jump to see who will be returning to Community if and when it returns.

NBC’s Community will feature a holiday family reunion of sorts when Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) comes face to face with his father during the show’s upcoming Thanksgiving episode.  In the episode titled “Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations,” fans will finally be introduced to William Winger, the estranged father whom Jeff hasn’t seen since he was a child.  Playing the elder Winger is none other than James Brolin (Marcus Welby, M.D.).  Community season four premieres at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19.  Hit the jump for more on season four and a set photo of McHale and Brolin.

Malcom McDowell Teaches COMMUNITY a Lesson as a History Professor in Season Four

The Greendale Seven are about to be schooled by Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) when he joins the cast of Community this fall.  McDowell is set to star in two episodes as a history professor (I hope they find a way to work A Clockwork Orange in).  THR reports that his character will be named Professor Cornwallis.  McDowell is the latest addition to the faculty, as British comedian Matt Lucas (Bridesmaids) recently joined as well.  Look for Community’s return to NBC in its new time slot, Friday nights at 8:30pm starting October 19th.
