Taika Waititi has found his next project, and no, it’s not Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Per Deadline, the Thor: Ragnarok filmmaker has signed on to co-write, direct, and executive produce a TV series adaptation of the 1981 Terry Gilliam sci-fi fantasy film Time Bandits for Apple. Waititi will co-write and direct the pilot, and Gilliam is onboard as an executive producer alongside Waititi and producer Dan Halsted. The series hails from Anonymous Content, Paramount Television, and MRC and will debut on Apple’s proprietary streaming service… whenever that arrives.

Gilliam's Time Bandits follows an 11-year-old kid who is fascinated by history and gets roped into the time-traveling adventures of a group of dwarves, who are on the run from an evil presence known as the Supreme Being.

This is an excellent fit for Waititi’s sensibilities, and one imagines he’ll create something wonderfully delightful, unique, and weird. After Ragnarok, he wrote and directed the dark comedy Jojo Rabbit, which hits theaters this fall and revolves around a young boy living in WWII Europe who sees Hitler as his imaginary friend. He also helmed the pilot for FX’s What We Do in the Shadows TV series, based on his film of the same name, and directed a few episodes of the upcoming live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian, which will debut on Disney’s streaming service. So yeah, he’s been busy.

Apple has yet to reveal exactly how people will be able to consume their original content despite putting into development and production original TV shows and films from the likes of Damien Chazelle, Francis Lawrence, Reese Witherspoon, and many, many others. But Time Bandits directed by Taika Waititi certainly adds even more clout to this yet-to-exist streaming service.
