Four years after its Japanese release, Tales from Earthsea is finally coming to America. Back in 2006 and 2007 most of the world got to see Studio Ghibli’s “Gedo Senki”, an adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea novels. The film could not be released in the US, however, because SyFy owned the screen rights to the Earthsea property. Now that those rights have expired, Disney is giving the film a limited release in the U.S. on August 13th. We are proud to premiere the gorgeous poster for the film.
Tales from Earthsea was directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of the legendary Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Ponyo). The elder Miyazaki is the greatest director of animated films the world has ever seen and it will be very interesting to see how much of his brilliance was passed on to his son. To find showtimes and to see the amazing poster for Tales from Earthsea hit the jump.

The poster does a really great job of invoking a mood of mystery and majesty. Who is that girl and what is her connection to that dragon? I want to find out, don’t you?
If you live in one of the following cities I encourage you to go see Tales from Earthsea in the theatre. If it gets a good enough reception, Disney may offer a wider release later this summer – or better yet, distribute more films like it in the future. I for one would love to see more traditional animation crossing the ocean from Japan as an alternative to the unimaginative, 3D digital animation glut which US studios have gotten themselves into.
Tales from Earthsea features the voices of Willem Dafoe, Cheech Marin and Timothy Dalton.

This movie sucks, so don't get your hopes up. I'm a huge Miyazaki fan, but Hayao Goro is not.
gonna have to agree w/ Steve. Just because daddy makes animated art doesn't mean Jr. should be allowed to ruin Le Guin's world. Definitely the weakest release from Ghibli that i can think of.
It's decent. But nothing more.
Why all of the hate? I would really like to see one comment about “Tales from Earthsea” that doesn't compare Goro Miyazaki to his father. All the talk of this film being “Ghibli's weakest release” is nonsense, that is the same a saying “Pixar's worst movie” in both instances the movies in question are be better than most of the tripe churned out by the studio system these days. Then there are the complaints that he ruined the work of Ursula Le Guin, “Howl's Moving Castle” differs greatly from the book, where were your torches and calls for Hayao Miyazaki's head after that movie? I'm sure “the Borrower Arrietty” will follow the same pattern Ghibli has exhibited in the past, taking ideas, characters, and themes from another story, in this case “the Borrowers”, and making something of their own. With that said don't ruin “Tales from Earthsea” for those who haven't seen it yet by spewing hate, let them make up their own minds.
Uh… that's a guy on the poster. Not a girl.
Strictly speaking, there's a girl in that picture too.
I liked tapes of earth seas it was a good movie the art especiallyit reminded me of early miazaki like naussicaä or shuna no tabi the story line was great so what he isn’t like his father in many was that’s a good thing I want goro to do his own thing and make his own path in this world also you forget hayaos pre ghibli works wernt the greatest either naussicasaä was is first big budget motion picture mostly due the success of the manga.
