The first trailer for the motion-capture animated adventure film Tarzan 3D has landed online and it’s, well, something.  Directed by Reinhard Kloss, the film stars Kellan Lutz and Spencer Locke as the eponymous Tarzan and Jane, but for some reason the entire film was animated using very, very cheap motion-capture.  The trailer plays like cut-scenes from an early 2000s videogame and I can’t imagine sitting through an entire feature-length film of this.  Somehow it’s even worse than Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within despite the fact that technology has advanced a full decade since that film.

Anyways, hit the jump to check out the trailer for yourself.  Tarzan 3D is expected to be released sometime in 2013.

Are you serious? I hope this is a joke…The technology on this “movie” if thats what you want to call it, looks really, really bad. Poor use of visual effects.

It seems that this is a small studio project (in hollywood standarts) to further the studio experience in MOCAP.
Wont be a smashing hit, but it must be a solid foundation for the director and technical staff to make a truly great movie next time…

wow, nice to see the Rise of The Planet of the Apes ending

Why does Tarzan shave? the most hairless man to ever live in the jungle.

C’mon… It looks OK (heck, even good). So what if his face is cartoony. The jungle looks good and the renders are not as “cheap” as everyone is making them out to be. And BTW, FF:Spirits Within, still has some of the best CG around. Some unfounded hate going on around here…

Yeah, the thing that Chitwood neglects to mention is that while FF: Spirits Within was a letdown, not because of the visual effects but because it was essentially a video game story told in CG, that the studio that made that movie went on to make FF: Advent Children. That movie, which is approaching 8 years of age, showcases some of the best CGI from outside, and inside, Hollywood FX houses to date.

I agree that this doesn’t look cheap to me. I think the issue is that photorealistic shading and textures make even just slightly non-photorealistic models much creepier than they would be if it was the other way around. I think that the shading and textures used on people should always be the least photorealistic thing in any animated movie. It’s too easy to fall into the uncanny valley otherwise. Try searching for “untooned” if you don’t believe me.

That being said, I could still watch this just fine. But I would prefer a Savage Tarzan as well.

    I don’t like his face

The problem with this is that he appears to have no weight at all, no effect on the ground or branches as he holds on to them, pretty poor CGI in my opinion, but anyway this is not Hollywood, its just some German studio.

What they should really do is adapt the original books into a live action film, i think it could be even Oscar worthy if done right. I know the right people are out there to do this. But do not remake Greystoke.
