Universal Pictures to Push “Franchises and Animation” with Sequels to FAST AND THE FURIOUS, BOURNE and TED, While Aiming for Two Animated Films a Year

     September 13, 2012

It looks like Universal Pictures is planning to firm up its film slate by focusing on franchises and animation over the next few years.  One of the most successful franchises to date started with The Fast and the Furious, which continues to hold strong (Fast Six is due May 24th, 2013).  Universal also plans on going ahead with sequels to this summer’s The Bourne Legacy, which starred Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz, as well as a follow-up to Seth MacFarlane’s Ted, with Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. They’re also getting ambitious on the animated front by expecting to crank out two films a year, versus their current rate of two every three years.  Hit the jump for more.

Seth-MacFarlane-Ted-sequelTHR reports that NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke is moving foward with his “franchises and animation” initiative.  In order to increase the financial stability of Universal Pictures, the studio will lean heavily on those two facets.  On the animation front, Burke touted the success of Despicable Me and said that the plan was for the studio to “eventually” put out two animated films a year.
On the live-action franchise front, the aforementioned Fast and Furious films have become a mainstay for the studio.  The Bourne Legacy continues another older franchise with a somewhat fresh injection earlier this year.  Burke said we should expect the studio to work on more films on that front.  In more recent original efforts, the live-action and computer-generated blend seen in Ted will likely be seen again in a sequel.  Burke was quoted as telling his team he wants to get to work on the follow-up “as soon as he can.”

Why is there a pic of mission impossible?

  • Josh Kaye

I don’t see the Mission Impossible pic, unless that’s the one with Renner all the way up there. I personally appreciate the Spanish Bourne Legacy poster. I feel it adds a bit of spice to the post.

      It’s Portuguese, not Spanish.

Bourne continues! Good! Legacy was less than the sum if its parts, but I really want to see these characters again.
