Well this news is sure to send some fans into a tizzy.  Deadline is reporting that Johnny Knoxville will voice Leonardo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Tony Shalhoub (Monk) will voice Splinter.  These roles were motion captured on set with Pete Ploszek as Leonardo and Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld) as Splinter, but Paramount always considered using voice actors.  Whether this means the turtles Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo will also get voice actors remains to be seen, but now it’s looking pretty likely.  Michelangelo does talk in the teaser trailer, but this may not be his final voice for the movie.

Not to be a total TMNT nerd, but if you assume that Knoxville and Shalhoub will be using their familiar voices (rambunctious and nebbishy, respectively), it certainly doesn’t fit the characters as they’ve been depicted in the past.  Leonardo is the stern leader of the group while Splinter is the old sage.  Honestly, this kind of casting makes me more intrigued about what director Jonathan Liebesman is cooking up even if it flies in the face of that Ninja Turtles fans expect.  The film opens August 8th.  If you haven’t seen it yet, hit the jump to check out the teaser trailer.

Here’s the synopsis for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

Dosnt this movie come out in a few months? I’ve got a bad feeling about this…

    • Kelly

Voice over work is always done in post. It’s not a huge undertaking.

      • Bloost

Even so, they should’ve had a voice cast long before pre-production. This reminds me of how they cast the voices for Green Lantern.

  • Daniel Ronczkowski

Well considering they are doing a sh*t-ton of reshoots, this is bad news.

    • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

I heard they were reshooting an entire 1/3 of the film and is going to be postponed until March 2015. If so then it’s not looking good.

      • Gary Collins

Where did you hear that? From a sewer? They postponed it for August 8, 2014. And that was to keep it out of the way of Transformers 4.

      • http://www.collider.com/ DNAsplitter

It’s an awful source but it was the Latino Review so it was an unreliable source but every 1/10 of their sources proves to be true. They just ran it along w the announcement of the late voice casting of Knoxville & Shalhoub. Also something about Michael Bay taking over the reigns himself to ensure it’s up to quality as he’s almost completed post production on TF4 and was unhappy w the film.

      • mattinacan

really? judging by Bay’s past movies he’s never been concerned about the quality of films.

      • Gary Collins

Where’s your quality movies, matt? I want to see them.

      • Gary Collins

I’m guessing he did that after Friday the 13th where he balked about the amount of sex in it. Yes surprisingly even Friday the 13th 2009 had too much sex for Michael Bay.

  • Stefan Bonomo

My first thought: WHAT THE HELL?

But then I remembered Jason Biggs plays Leonardo in the Nickelodeon series and he’s really good on that, so I’m remaining optimistic. The only problem is Knoxville isn’t really an actor…so…
Also, why would you take the effort to cast young up incomers or someone like Danny Woodburn just to do mo-cap and then replace them later. That makes no sense.

    • Marissa Evans

A lot of the expectations people had for the recent TMNT show were shattered in the best way possible. Even I, admittedly, thought it was going to be just dreadful after I saw the trailer, but surprisingly it’s probably better than the 1987 version. (Yeah I went there, what’cha gonna do?)
That said, Jason Biggs and Johnny Knoxville aren’t really comparable. Knoxville is just such a weird choice, whereas someone like Biggs of Sean Astin I could imagine pulling it off.

      • Stefan Bonomo

Exactly, I think the shows great (although my heart still goes to the 2003 series) and Biggs was the only actor I was cautious about. I knew Astin, Cipes, Paulsen, Whitman, Lee, Richardson, etc. were all excellent choices, and then Biggs proved me wrong.
But yeah, Knoxvile hasn’t proved himself yet so I’m cautious again.

      • Marissa Evans

’03 version I never got into (then again I was in my teens and into ‘The OC’ at the time), though I hear they were close to the comics, so who am I to complain? Plus my nostalgia for the ’87 one causes huge bias.

  • Leo Spaceman

Intrigued isn’t the word I would use to describe my feelings towards this film.

At what point do you think Arnett said “I’ve made a huge mistake?”

    • Gary Collins

Nope, just saying hey it’s money I don’t care. You think I care about Michael Bay or anything. You know I like getting payed for acting and I’m not picky about the films or the directors just because some snobby ass commentor on a website doesn’t like my particular decisions.

      • Norrtron

Jesus dude, it’s an Arrested Development reference. Calm down.

      • Gary Collins

You see I don’t even know that show, so how do I even get that reference.

      • mattinacan

        lol idiot

      • Gary Collins

        lol moron, idiot, douchebag.

  • Jamesy

Having Will Arnett voice Leonardo would have been the better choice, and having Knoxville as the “comedic sidekick” against Fox seems like a better idea. This just seems sloppy, I would’ve thought the actors doing mo-cap would also voice the characters, why go through the hassle of finding someone “up and coming” only to essentially replace the performance with a different actor? Seems odd, I wonder if it will still rake in the cash with kids, or if kids these days are even aware of TMNT.

  • i AN LEGEND

Fuck it, I don’t care. Put the movie out.

  • God’s Diamond

I know they’re two totally different characters, but Adrian Monk in a sewer would be crazy as f#&#*

  • YodaRocks

All signs point to a bad movie. :(

    • Gary Collins

      Says you.

  • Grayden

Kinda strange that they got different actors to do voicework. Spinter I understand, because the guy playing him has a higher-pitched voice. Knoxville, eh, I’m not opposed to it because frankly, we’ve never seen him do anything remotely dramatic. ‘Walking Tall’ was the closest. He could have a really good, deep. commanding voice.

Perhaps the voices weren’t screening well with test audiences and they re-cast a few roles.

  • DEADP00L

Yep it’s official this movie is the flop of 2014. Megan Fox cast as April O’Neal was the icing on the flop vulgar cake – the rest is just a mess.

    • STAR-LORD #ROUGE SQUAD

Lmao STFU. You would think it came out over the weekend STFU lol! Go back watching your VHS copy of TMNT corn ball.

      • DEADP00L

um I actually have never watched the VHS version – I’m the new generation. And I think Megan Fox is the worst casting idea in the history of horrible casting ideas.

      • Gary Collins

Actually Jaden Smith is worse. I mean Megan Fox can act circles around that kid.

      • DEADP00L

He’s not even 15 yet and she’s been acting since she was 11 or 12. She has no excuse, he on the other hand…let’s just say that he doesn’t strike me as a kid with much free will.

      • Gary Collins

So? He already has gotten enough bad performances to make me think he can’t act unless prodded by father behind the camera. So he’s not 15 yet, that’s an excuse? Ever heard of horrible child actors before?
Another worse one would be Channing Tatum and that’s worse because he apparently has taken to the notion that he is apparently a comedian when he hasn’t gotten a funny bone in his body.

      • DEADP00L

Um I think the only worse actor to put right next to Megan Fox would be Hayden Christensen. But Megan Fox is just another hack of an actress, I could barely stand her in a commercial.

      • Gary Collins

I think someone secretly likes her.
Christensen can do alright depending on the material, I actually thought he did a better job in Jumper, Takers, then he did in the whole Star Wars prequel trilogy.

    • Gary Collins

I doubt it, TMNT’s a too valued property to fail. It’s not like this is old property like Lone Ranger or John Carter and it’s coming out in August with no real rivals.

      • DEADP00L

Like Robocop? We all saw how that turned out.

      • Gary Collins

Robocop is an old property. Same as Lone Ranger and John Carter.

      • DEADP00L

Old property with actual value. Like TMNT it has a fanbase, has a toy line and various other methods of gross. It had its time and this reboot only solidified the notion that some classics need to be left alone. TMNT is the same thing, it had an entire franchise and continues to have good cartoons but a reboot of the films won’t do anything for it and if anything it might actually hurt it, just like RoboCop.

      • Gary Collins

Robocop is a franchise that was basically dead by the time of the remake, nothing new had been done with it since that miniseries and it was pretty much dead by then.

      • DEADP00L

TMNT wasn’t very much alive like it was in 90′s either.

      • Gary Collins

It’s got an active TV series right now. It’s pretty alive.

      • DEADP00L

Not like ti was back in the 90′s that’s for sure. But then again no time is exactly the same.

      • Gary Collins

That third film did kill any other future feature film versions of the show.

      • Gary Collins

That third film did kill any other future feature film versions of the show.

  • RecoveR

I thought they already cast each of the Turtles voice actors? I’m not hugely affected by this movie if its good or bad, just like keeping up with the news is all. Most Summer movies are in April/May this year anyway

  • mattinacan

the trailer was awful, the turtles look hideous, and doing this four months before release stinks of a nervous studio that knows they have a piece of crap on their hands.

    • Gary Collins

Matt please in dear god in heaven, shut up.
