In the wake of Paramount’s endless push backs and delays regarding its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie (now simple called Ninja Turtles), Nickelodeon has quietly developed a new (and improved?) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles television series set to air this fall.

The first official trailer for the series begins, naturally, at the beginning – four turtles! an accident! a secret! “They were trailed for battle,” the narrator recounts solemnly, “and now, when their city is under siege, the fate of humanity is in their hands” (or feet, perhaps). The original TMNT cartoon was one of my absolutely favorites as a kid, and it seems Nickelodeon may be doing a decent job of resurrecting the franchise for a new generation of fans. To see the trailer, hit the jump.

Trailer via EW.

Despite the lack of Splinter and April in the trailer, we do get a short shot of Shredder, who seems legitimately menacing.

The series’ executive producer Ciro Neili spoke to EW recently and said of this iteration of the Turtles’ story:

“I tried to boil it down and get to really what’s at the core of it, which is this sense of brothers and camaraderie. Everything grew out of that. It’s like a band. You want a Beatles thing.”

That Beatles analogy weirdly works (think about it).  But Neili, please – never use “turtles” and “boil” in the same thought.

The trailer will premiere on Nick.com tomorrow and Nickelodeon this coming Saturday.

Dear Nickelodeon, Please stop raping my childhood with your shitty art school animation & voice over work. Please take the time to do it properly, you may write your own stories, but please do not piss on the overarching themes. Sincerely, Most everyone.

Wow, relax. I thought it looked cool.

Go back and watch the old animated series, it’s not a great as you remember.

      This will be better.

      • Guns Of Navarone

You can’t be serious? Even the animated movie was better than this crap.

  • Jeffrey

Their mouths look like Wallace and Gromit characters. Their eyes and heads are completely disproportionate to the comics. They are just really soft looking.

  • Rockslide

It looks like the creators of this iteration were huge Teen Titans fans. This isn’t really what I was expecting. I’ll have to give it a couple episodes. Its too bad we can’t get something more in the vein of the first live action movie.

  • SPLINTER

I NEVER thought I’d say this, but, ….

Please Michael Bay! Come and rescue these Turtles! You’re movie is very welcome here!

This series looks damn awful and cheap! Seriously Nikolodeon, just re-air the 80s toon instead!

Are there people that actually like the bad CG look of this? I feel like I’m watching cut scenes from a PS2 game.

    For the love of God!!!!

This makes the new Voltron force look like a masterpiece, i def agree with the above commentor, about how bad the mouths and eyes look, its more like a cell shaded cluster F!

Why cant we just make a good eastman and laird one, for gods sake boy!!

  • Guns Of Navarone

    Wtf is THAT?!

    YMNT

    Youngster Mutant Ninja Turtles

Why is it so difficult to remain faithful to the original source material? Fvcks sake.

I kinda dig it. Though I will agree that there has to be a ‘gritty’ version of the turtles done before I die. I still read those original graphic novels I kept over the last twenty years… I’ll watch the new show, though it’ll really depend if my kids are into it. Weird.

The 2003 animated series got the tone right with the balance of humour and action, this looks more in line with the original animated series.

After reading an article last week about Nick’s ratings being down more than 30% in the last couple of months and how they’re at risk of being pulled from some cable and satellite providers, it’s stuff like this that is part of the reason why.

What set Nick apart from other networks was the simple fact that they were inventive. They were coming up with their own original shows, most of which were very well-written and very good. They didn’t rely on 30-minute toy ads to be successful – they didn’t have to.

Nick has unfortunately fallen by the wayside. About 6 years ago is when this downward spiral started happening. They started pulling the plug on moderately-successful, yet ORIGINAL shows, and replacing them with the rehashed recycled crap they have now. How many more Dreamworks spinoffs do we need? Why do we have another Power Rangers show – on Nick?! And now we have TMNT to add to the list. And why are FOP and Spongebob still on when no one’s really watching them anymore (jumped the shark) and the ratings haven’t been all that impressive either?

I have nothing against the turtles, but to be honest, I really preferred the 80s cartoon myself. I’ve been used to seeing the turtles in 2D and I’m sorry to say, but someone else on another comment board put it best when he said that the animation for this show looked just like the animation in the video for the 1985 song, “Money for Nothing,” by Dire Straits. Dire Straits was WAY ahead of their time back in their day.

This is not 1985 anymore, though. This is 2012. Nick needs to spend money if they want to make money and be successful, which is something they refuse to do right now.

Philippe Dauman at Viacom can keep on blaming Nielsen all he wants to but it’s Nickelodeon that is to blame (mostly Cyma and Marjorie) for their problems right now. The only way they can get on track again is if they start doing some of their own original shows, or at the very least, revive some other shows like they did with Figure It Out. 30-minute toy ads aren’t going to get them out of the mess they’re in.

I think it looks pretty neat. I’m totally in.

One caveat: “the wild one”? Ugh. That’s a silly descriptor.

I’ve been a fan of TMNT for a great long while, from the old cartoon, Mirage comics, Archie comics, even the terrible Image comics. And now IDW comics. The newer cartoon wasn’t so bad, but I didn’t watch too much of it.

The turtles are an on-going, mutable franchise, and I welcome this new direction. If it doesn’t last, they’ll be back before too long anyway.

  • oaktreeradar

And I for one welcome our new insect overlords And I’d just like to remind them that I could be very useful in rounding up slaves for their underground sugar mines.

  • Epic

I’m mixed about the whole thing, but at least Michelangelo and Donatello have their signature weapons. I thought their weapons were changed to a kusarigama and a Naginata, respectively.

If the series is well-written, well-acted, and the animation moves okay, I suppose these strange looking, three-toed, boxy, freak designs can work.

    I give it a season.
