Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot is sneaking up on us like the stealthy ninja that it is, but it hasn’t exactly hit us over the head with its marketing just yet. That’s a good move, because they’ve shown just enough to get a sense of the movie’s tone and story without giving everything away. Everything I’ve seen so far has actually been pretty impressive, so it’s no surprise that the film’s latest TV spot is more of the same, even if it does appear to share a little more on the plot side of things. Dubbed “Created as Weapons,” the short commercial teases what is possibly a unique origin story for the title characters.
Starring Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, Noel Fisher, and Danny Woodburn, with Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub voicing Leonardo and Splinter respectively, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th. Hit the jump to watch the new TV spot.

It sounds like TMNT could be going in The Amazing Spider-Man’s direction as far as origin stories go, with the Turtles’ creation being cast in a similar light to Oscorp’s gene manipulation. (If this was the original story in the comics, then that’s news to me.) Is it just a way to add another layer of story to TMNT, will it be a seed of an explanation for other mutant characters, or is Paramount setting up a possible franchise? My guess: a little bit of each. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
