New TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES TV Spot Teases Possible Origin of Title Heroes

     July 14, 2014

Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot is sneaking up on us like the stealthy ninja that it is, but it hasn’t exactly hit us over the head with its marketing just yet.  That’s a good move, because they’ve shown just enough to get a sense of the movie’s tone and story without giving everything away.  Everything I’ve seen so far has actually been pretty impressive, so it’s no surprise that the film’s latest TV spot is more of the same, even if it does appear to share a little more on the plot side of things.  Dubbed “Created as Weapons,” the short commercial teases what is possibly a unique origin story for the title characters.

Starring Megan FoxWill ArnettWilliam FichtnerAlan RitchsonPete PloszekJeremy HowardNoel Fisher, and Danny Woodburn, with Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub voicing Leonardo and Splinter respectively, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8th.  Hit the jump to watch the new TV spot.

It sounds like TMNT could be going in The Amazing Spider-Man’s direction as far as origin stories go, with the Turtles’ creation being cast in a similar light to Oscorp’s gene manipulation.  (If this was the original story in the comics, then that’s news to me.)  Is it just a way to add another layer of story to TMNT, will it be a seed of an explanation for other mutant characters, or is Paramount setting up a possible franchise?  My guess: a little bit of each.  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Here’s the official synopsis for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

This might very well be another ‘Adventures of Tintin’ in that the character designs may not be initially pleasing to look at, but they grow on you.

Again I keep finding myself more pleasantly surprised w each clip. My only concern is the director as I don’t like his prior work on Battle:LA and Wrath of the Titans as the stories were very muddled and some of his action scenes were hard to see what was happening. I would have preferred Ratner (who was up for the job) or Louis Leterrier as they seem to handle their action scenes and story telling better than Liebesman and their talent would mirror the type of film TMNT is.

i was definitely worried about this director having hated pretty much all his movies especially battle:la, but this looks to be his most inspired film to date.

That’s because you spend your afternoons at the local elementary school giving rimjobs to preteen boys during recess for $15 a pop. i don’t know why you are on here bragging about it. You need some serious help.
