If Terminator Salvation killed the Terminator franchise (and I believe it did), then Hannover House looks like it will be punching the corpse.  Via a press release, the company says that it will develop Terminator 3000, a $70-million, 3D animated feature “based on the characters and situations introduced in the original Terminator feature.”  And here’s the best part: “Story details for Terminator 3000 are being kept under close wraps, but the writers and production team have a stated goal of minimizing violence in order to obtain a PG-13 level of material.”  Not to nitpick, but Salvation had plenty of violence an still got a PG-13.  The MPAA really doesn’t have a problem with violence as long as it’s not gory. [For the sake of clarity, the image above is not from Terminator 3000]

Production is scheduled to begin in January 2011.  Hit the jump to check out the press release.

Here’s the press release:

NEW YORK, NY, Aug 12, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) — Hannover House, the entertainment distribution division of Target Development Group, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: TDGI) (www.HannoverHouse.com), has entered into a feature film development venture with Vancouver-based Red Bear Entertainment, for “Terminator 3000,” envisioned as a $70-million dollar budgeted, 3-D animated feature film based on the characters and situations introduced in the original “Terminator” feature. Hannover House C.E.O. Eric Parkinson previously served as C.E.O. of Hemdale Home Video, Inc. and Hemdale Communications, Inc., and handled the distribution of the original “Terminator” feature.

Story details for “Terminator 3000″ are being kept under close wraps, but the writers and production team have a stated goal of minimizing violence in order to obtain a PG-13 level of material.

Hemdale produced and distributed director James Cameron’s original “Terminator” feature, but released the sequel rights in 1990 to Carolco, which later transferred the rights to ultimately end up under the control of Halcyon Media. Santa Barbara based Pacificor, LLC prevailed in the most recent auction and transfer of rights to the franchise in January, and retains approval and licensing authority over the proposed “Terminator 3000″ project.

Hannover House and Red Bear Entertainment will release details of the production timing, financing and principal production personnel later this year, in advance of a proposed January, 2011 start.

I actually quite liked Terminator Salvation, yeah the acting wasn't great and there were some silly plot points, but that's part and parcel with just about any major action franchise. It had an overall interesting story and it took the franchise to the place everyone wanted to see it go: war with the machines. It wasn't as good as Terminator 2, but I defy you to say that the god awful Terminator 3 was better than Salvation.

From what your saying though Terminator 3000 looks like and absolute heap of garbage. Like it or not, at least Salvation made an attempt to give fans what they asked for: an action movie set during the war with the machines. Has anyone EVER asked for a watered down animated Terminator?

Of course Animated violence its treated harsher than realistic movie violence? Why? Because they still consider anything animated is for 'KIDS' They don't realize there are people over the age of 18 who do read graphic novels and watch graphic adult animation with violence and harsh storys. (lets not go into hentai ok) Why dont they just make this a fucking saturday morning cartoon LOL 'The Adventures of T100 and his cyber dog'

I'm no McG apologist, but I too thought Salvation got a bum rap. It is my understanding that the scrip had to be entirely overhauled because Bale didn't like the original plan to kill off Connor at the end (thus the wildly ridiculous heart transplant bs that concluded the movie). What I read about the this ending sounded cool and kind of daring. Instead we ended up with a muddled plot and that tacked on bit w/ Arnie. I also think Sam Worthington did a pretty good job (aside from the accent slips – why didn't they just make him Australian?) with a thankless, go nowhere role.

That said, the franchise has worn out its welcome. For 70 million, I could have two fresh movies like District 9 or an animated Terminator…what's to discuss?

I thought salvation was pretty cool. It did have flaws, but I'm still waiting on McG's extra 30-40 minute longer version. The “director's cut” that was released is total BS. Having this new animated PG-13 version is also just BS. I don't care for violence but the Terminator franchise made billions WITH violence and, in my opinion, the kind of warfare violence it has, really helps with the intensity of the subject matter. I'm not looking forward to this new formulaic banker dream of the Terminator franchise. That's all this is to these dumbasses, it's just a product and not a piece of art. Typical banker mentality, always looking at the short term investment and NOT the long term. How much money are the first two films STILL making?!!!

Oh yeah, I forgot about the ending… yeah the ending was pretty crap, but the rest of the movie was a lot better, they just kinda shot themselves in the foot by revealing the twist of the movie in the third trailer.

I was part of the Blu-Ray Live screening of Terminator Salvation and the open discussion with McG and in that he stated that he believes your director's cut should be what is shipped to theaters. It should be the filmmakers goal to make sure that the audience sees the best version of the film from the very beginning making a director's cut unnecessary.

Say what you will about the man, but I actually thought that was a rather insightful statement.

Gay, terminator needs violence that's why salvation didnt do as well as it could have. That and Christian bale was a horrible John Conner.

Terminator 3: The Redemption wasn't a very good game.

Terminator Salvation was awesome! I am devistated that its proposed 3 film story arc will never be seen now!
We will never learn how time travel happens, how the robots become shiny and tougher and how blue lasers was then needed to kill them.
Only idiots that couldnt see these things coming in the next 2 films ruined TS with naysaying over the internet, Just because it wasnt the film they were expecting they call it crap. Sure it wasnt perfect but it was better than 3 by a looooong shot!

man i agree with you. salvation was a awesome movie and they should make sequels for it but no the internet bitchers got to it first. the third movie should of been the one that should of never happened even tho i kinda liked it but why so much hate for salvation.? they should end the story arc as a whole because in this rate the terminator story will never see a ending. salvation might of not been as good as 2 but it was still a very good movie.
