Rumor: Could Dwayne Johnson Battle Arnold Schwarzenegger in TERMINATOR 5?

Things have been heating up for the fifth installment of the Terminator franchise lately, with Paramount recently entering talks to distribute the Annapurna Pictures/Skydance film and Arnold Schwarzenegger confirming that he’ll be returning with shooting set to begin in January.  Now a pretty wild rumor is circulating that Dwayne Johnson—the go-to guy when your franchise needs a boost—is being eyed to star in the film alongside Schwarzenegger.  Hit the jump for more, including a possible 1940s setting (what?) for the sequel.

arnold-schwarzenegger-terminator-5The source of this rumor comes courtesy of the WWE Examiner (via AICN), which reports that one version of the script for Terminator 5 is being developed specifically for Johnson.  Moreover, the Examiner’s source adds that one rumored plot for T5 would make the film a prequel:

Incredibly, Schwarzenegger may not play the role of a machine in the next film, but a potentially heroic human figure in or close to the Connor family. One theory is that Schwarzenegger’s remarkable ability to protect the Connor family in the 1940s or 1950s with antiquated weaponry by today’s standards ultimately inspired the machines to develop a terminator in his likeness that was eventually sent to 1984 when Sarah Connor was first targeted for termination.

This is all to be taken with a grain of salt for now, especially the period setting business, but I have to say the prospect of Johnson and Schwarzenegger going head to head in a Terminator movie is pretty damn exciting.  Johnson is currently filming Hercules with director Brett Ratner and may or may not be shooting Fast & Furious 7 later this year, and he also has a third G.I. Joe film in the pipeline.

It seems like The Rock has become the “go to” guy whenever Hollywood is trying to re-invigorate an action franchise. Wouldn’t be surprised if they put him in the next ‘Die Hard’ or something as well. And probably the next ‘Expendables’ too.

….The Expendables is for wash-outs, for the most part! Ha.

That’s ok, you don’t need an actor to play the Terminator. Look at Arnold.

Dwayne Johnson is straight cash in the bank. Put him in T5 and I will give you more money without you asking for it. The series could use a big time action guy that isn’t rolling with his AARP card.

this will never happen but a forties noir terminator with Arnold as a human protecting sarahs parents has a ridiculous amount of potential

    Sounds fantastic.

Lose Arnold. He’s way too old and looks it and he was a bad actor before his long hiatus and he’s even worse now.

I was saying back in 2004 that The Rock should take over the Terminator franchise from Arnold, since he was kind of old for the role even back then.

oh FFS, just stop it! stop adding more bullshit to this once great film series! Come up with a new franchise where you can put these two together (if its true).
Regardless, there is no way that T5 can turn out well. So please stop before you film hacks completely trash the Terminator cannon and legacy.

PERFECT STORY: Skynet is after a human general, one of the best warriors and basically an inspiration to all so this is pre connor days, the human is Arnie. The movie ends with Skynet basing its new terminator on this old human… but obviously making the robot younger looking. the reason skynet makes its killers look like him is an insult to the human rebellion taking their hero and making him killer. Arnie’s age problem solved.

please don´t, the rock is great for actioncomedy, so i can´t take a film with him seriously, and i´m still hoping for a serious and gritty terminator in the vein of the first and not for some lightheaded parody.

Arnie did his fare share of action comedy/straight up comedy.

    This sounds interesting!

I’m rusty on my Terminator canon, so bear with me.

If Skynet had a time machine and was sending Terminators back in time so frequently, wouldn’t they eventually be successful in killing SOMEONE in the Connor family line? As I understood the backstory, Skynet developed a time machine. The resistance found it and used it, but not after Skynet had managed to send 3 Terminators back: 1985, 1994, Early 2,000s.

But if they go with this story, it seems like Skynet had the technology for quite a while, sending several Terminators back, which strains the premise.

By sending a Terminator back to the 1940′s, which inspired Skynet to create a T-800 that looks like Arnie, that implies they were using the technology quite a bit over the span of at least a few months, if not years. And in all that time they couldn’t kill a single Connor ancestor?
