James Cameron is returning, as a producer, to the Terminator franchise he brought to life all the way back in 1984, and he's bringing Linda Hamilton back with him. With that fresh start comes, officially, a fresh title: IGN reports that the upcoming robo-showdown directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool) will be titled Terminator: Dark Fate.

Cool title, and I'm glad we're not doing like, Dark Fate: A Terminator Tale or anything like that. Details outside the name are pretty scarce plot-wise, though. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back once again as the Terminator, and Mackenzie Davis is coming aboard in a key role that appears to be taking the reins from Hamilton's Sarah Connor. It also looks like Cameron is about to pull a Halloween (2018) up in this franchise, ignoring all the wonkiness that happened after T2: Judgement Day. In this case, it's probably for the best. Jonathan Mostow's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is a perfectly fine if non-essential entry, but then things went a bit off the rails, culminating in the endlessly confusing Terminator Genisys just time-traveling everything to pieces anyway.

Back in 2017, Cameron explained the timeline like this:

“This is a continuation of the story from Terminator 1 and Terminator 2. And we’re pretending the other films were a bad dream. Or an alternate timeline, which is permissible in our multi-verse. This was really driven more by [Tim] than anybody, surprisingly, because I came in pretty agnostic about where we took it. The only thing I insisted on was that we somehow revamp it and reinvent it for the 21st century.”

Terminator: Dark Fate was originally slotted in a July 26 premiere date but got bumped back to November 1 to duke it out at the Thanksgiving box office. For more on Terminator: Dark Fate check out the links below.
