TERMINATOR: GENESIS Narrow’s Role of Kyle Reese down to Jai Courtney or Boyd Holbrook

     February 10, 2014

About a month ago, we reported that Jai Courtney and Boyd Holbrook were among a shortlist of actors testing for the part of Kyle Reese in Alan Taylor’s Terminator: Genesis.  It sounds as if you can narrow that list down further to just those two individuals.  Courtney’s latest efforts include the actioners Jack Reacher, A Good Day to Die Hard, and I, Frankenstein, with a role in Divergent coming out March 21st.  Holbrook has had less high-profile pictures of late, including The Host, Out of the Furnace, and television’s Behind the Candelabra.  He’s got a hot list of films coming up, however, such as David Fincher’s Gone Girl, Gavin O’Connor’s Jane Got a Gun and Terrence Malick’s untitled project.

Whoever wins out to play the role made famous by Michael Biehn in the original film will join Arnold Schwarzenegger in the robotic title role, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, and Jason Clarke, who was in talks to star as John Connor at last report.  Terminator: Genesis is due out July 1, 2015. Not Courtney please. Kyle Reese isn’t a generic bald space marine.

    • Giovanni Luis Jiminez

I see what you did there

  • Tilden Catz

Courtney is another flavourless drone that Hollywood tries to sell. Another Taylor Kitsch. That might be what they’re going for by cranking out another Terminator however. What the hell, quality doesn’t matter, right?

    • axalon

Kitsch was actually pretty great on Friday Night Lights, unfortunately he simply hasn’t found a good feature film to really show off those skills.

      • Leo Spaceman

Jai is pretty much in the exact same position as Kitsch. He was great in Spartacus and really pulled off tragic quite well, but he has never found a good role in a movie.

I still think the best thing Jai could do is try to get the starring role in a dark and violent TV show similar to Sons of Anarchy so long as it isn’t on a super polished Network show.

      • Bob

Have you seen Lone Survivor? He was fantastic in it. Great movie.

      • Leo Spaceman

Completely agree. It was a great movie. It was a good role for Kitsch and shows what he is capable of. I think its the same kind of film that Jai needs. Not just the mindnumbingly dumb one dimensional characters that he has been getting.

When did actors become so bland and non charismatic ????
I blame this on Kubrick and Robert Bresson
They hadve current generation of filmmakers thinking that a stoic face = acting

“i’m going to blame the potential and unconfirmed casting of an actor in a major modern hollywood action flick on a classic and heavily influential sci-fi film from 40 years ago” – troll logic

“Narrow’s”? What the hell is the apostrophe for?

  • yrulaughing

Jai Courtney would make a great Niko Bellic, if someone were to make a direct movie adaptation of GTA IV

  • http://tarek-to-verso.over-blog.com/ tarek

No Courtney. Boyd Holbrook is John Connor.

  • Jan

Clearly, with Jai Courtney, they’re trying to recreate some of that magic Sam Worthington brought to Salvation.

    • James

      You call that magic? Lol

  • ThisGuy01

Don’t know why this is still under discussion. They’re gonna go with Hollywood’s current “It Boy” the Son Of Sam Worthington. Jai Courtney. The movie will suck either way.

    • The Flobbit

I honestly forgot Sam Worthington existed until I saw your post.
      Oh…who were we talking about…

  • Shawn Micheal Madden

I like Courtney. He was good in Jack Reacher but kind of eh in the latest Die Hard. But with the right material, he can definitely pull this one of.

    • yrulaughing

he was decent in Jack Reacher as a mostly one-dimensional villain, not exactly the acting range you’d hope for with Kyle Reese

      • Bob

Watch Spartacus. Jai was great in that; honestly he was.

  • JJ

If they’re smart they’ll go with Holbrook. Jai Courtney hasn’t proved himself to be anything special in any of the films he’s released lately. Boyd looks more like Biehn too.

  • Strong Enough

    please no Jai

  • Littertray

I wouldn’t go with Jai for the simple reason that he looks bigger than Arnold does nowdays. That will completly ruin the feeling that the audience got in the original of cheering on the scrappy average human fighting to protect a woman against a hulking being of death. It was a good take on David vs Goliath and helped the story a lot.

  • Matt1

    F**k this movie.

I agree wih most of the comments. I like Jai but he doesn’t have the proper look of what Kyle Reese is about as a character. I’m not sure how they’re going with the characters in this film but from the first Terminator, Kyle Reece greatly developed as a hero and as what a previous commentor said he should be somewhat a scrawny person that grows into a hero. Already has the hero bulk look which is the look Arnold had in Judgemenr Day. We’ll take Boyd, pleasue.
