TERMINATOR: GENESIS Testing Jai Courtney, Boyd Holbrook, and More for Kyle Reese Role

     January 10, 2014

With Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) set to play Sarah Connor and John Clarke onboard as John Connor, producers are now looking to fill the role of Kyle Reese in the Terminator reboot Terminator: GenesisThor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor is set to helm what is envisioned as the first in a trilogy of Terminator films, and the pic is going big with regards to Terminator canon.  The studio first approached Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) about filling the Kyle Reese role, but both actors apparently refused to read.  Now Paramount is focusing on casting a lesser known actor in the part, and word has come as to which actors will be testing for Kyle Reese next week.  Hit the jump to find out.

Per Variety, Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard), Boyd Holbrook (The Host), Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie), Sam Reid (Anonymous), and Tom Cocquerel will be testing for the role of Reese in Terminator: Genesis.  Of course Michael Biehn played the Kyle Reese role in the 1984 original film, and it’s clear that Paramount is going young to fill the part opposite 26-year-old Emilia Clarke.  Plot details for the redo are still under wraps, but Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to reprise his iconic role and the film will be accompanied by a new TV series, which will tie into the overall mythology of the new trilogy.  With a release date of July 1, 2015 looming, expect to hear further casting information soon.

    please, not jai courtney.

I think Jai is capable of great acting and I thought he was great in Spartacus. The problem is that he is taking less dramatic roles and only doing big budget action films and is trying to set him self up more as an action star. I think he would be great if he did something like Sons of Anarchy, which would be like a well developed dark and tragic character that plays out over a long time.

    • MEY

We do not need this movie.
And I do not want to believe that Arnold is expected to reprise his role.
      Forget him!
And show us the war in a sequel, not the genesis. Everybody knows how it started.

      • Leo Spaceman

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the last terminator sequel showed us the war, years after the rise of the machines started and a lot of people complained and Arnold wasn’t in it but they CGIed an Arnie head onto a very fit body builder and everyone complained.

      • MEY

You can’t see war scenes with real terminators in the movie.

At the beginning of the film the characters discover that a new type of terminator is being constructed. At the end of the movie you can see some of them in action but their mass production has just started. There are different robots and bounty hunters in the story but this is not the war which is presented in some short scenes in the original terminator film. The movie ends with the hint that war is coming.

I don’t want to correct you but it is possible that you should watch Salvation again. :)

My strictly personal opinion is that it is the best Terminator movie, but the Arnie head scene should have been deleted, without doubt.

Jai fucking Courtney… how does the guy get work. I mean, yeah, he was good in Spartacus but ever since his acting has turned to shit.

  • Alejandro

    Jonah Hill for the win!

  • Jan

Justin Bieber as Kyle Reese. “Come with me if you want to live, baby.”

    • eternalozzie

I could even hear the smooth Bieber music playing when I read that.

Jai Courtney was awesome in Spartacus but he was awful in Die Hard. Although I’m not sure if his performance was his fault as everyone seemed to be giving it their B performance. He was ok in Jack Reacher. Losing confidence in this film as I was not a big fan of Thor: The Dark World and actors seem to be turning down roles who aren’t that well known. It’s a shame because I love the Terminator films and feel that with a good script exploring new territory (not like T3 which was a rehash of T2 IMO) they could really make something worth wild.

    • Werefon

T3 was a great Comedy and its biggest achievement is that Arnie was able to gain the same muscle mass as in T2. He still can with some “vitamins” and HGH (and he should under Dr’s supervision it can be done without damaging your health but increasing it). If 80 years old guy can look excellent, Arnie can too. Plus some CG facelift and T is back!

      • GunzOfNavarone

Yeah but I get the impression Arnie isn’t as dedicated as Sly when it comes to getting back into shape.

      • Werefon

Yeah, but unlike Sly he never had a scene when he needed to show his body. Also, Sly using HGH and some other candys. Arnie (if he does) is using much less gear. As for workout it is probably the same just different supplements taken.

In Terminator he must and it can be done only by using some juice. Under control of a Doctor, steroids are actually can make you good. I think Mr.Univers and Olympia knows what to do.

  • Werefon

I guess they looking for cheapest actors they can get with this casting. Acting quality is not priority either.

They just need some British actor who will pretend to be American and will try US accent (sometimes not good). Nowadays that’s what they are doing right.

    • eternalozzie

The problem is the English actors are doing better than us … and as long as you don’t hire Patrick Stewart, Christain Bale, or Ian McKellen you don’t have to deal with diva attitudes that are so common among American actors.

      • Leo Spaceman

Professor X and Magneto as Divas? What crack are you smoking? They seem like the happiest old folks I know and are loving life. If you see any of the photos they release they seem to be incredibly joyful people and best friends. They aren’t Bieber who was brought up with instant millions and caregivers telling him he is the greatest thing Canada S**T out into America since maple syrup. They are actors of the Theater and professionals.

      • eternalozzie

What does the Biebs have to do with this conversation?

  • eternalozzie

Nothing makes me want to watch this so far and I love a lot of the Terminator mythos.

  • Jamesy

Please don’t hire Jai Courtney…just no. Would be better if they started looking at people like Garrett Hedlund, Jack O’Connell etc

  • Rock

Garrett Hedlund IS lesser known and about as talented as Jai Courtney: one rock sitting next to another rock. No one can match Micheal Biehn’s haunted and hunted look, but they can try. Glad the A-listers passed. Smart moves.

I really don’t think Jai Courtney was one of the problems with (the terrible, terrible) “Die Hard 5″. I think he was good in “Spartacus” and I’m willing to give him a shot. It’s kinda like Jason Momoa with “Conan the Barbarian”, that was a terrible movie but I don’t lay that at his feet. He was actually a pretty good Conan. The reason for that debacle rests squarely with Marcus Nispel, as “Die Hard 5″ should be blamed on John Moore and nobody else. Well, maybe there’re others at fault, but *I* blame him. He has yet to make an even slightly watchable film in my eyes.

    • Kota Lancaster

Well I think Skip Woods should get some blame too.

      • Lee Harvey Cobblepot

That’s probably fair, but I never promised to be fair, did I? ;)

  • ridge

Great, Nicholas Hoult and Garrett Hedlund, the best and most known actors in Hollywood refused to read the damn f*cking script, @ssholes ¬¬

anyway, if they cast Jai just hope that he give a little piece acting this time

Jai Courtney is the new Sam Worthington.

    • The Flobbit

Sam Worthington is the new Paul Walker. Absolutely no offense to his name, but they’re both forgettable, lacking in charisma, and not very cool.

  • Matt1

Fuck this! No more Terminators unless they’re directed by James Cameron!!!

  • VicManMan

I hate how people assume actor + shitty movie = shitty actor. He hasn’t been in enough things to judge yet. Die Hard was bad for several reasons that had nothing to do with him.

    • LEM

He sucked in Jack Reacher too.

Hoult and Hedlund refused to read, umm, looking good for the film…

  • soupherman

Just based on the actors they are looking at, it seems like this will be another derivative Terminator movie that instead of adding some originality to the lore, it will ostensibly be the same characters with the same motivations, same themes and same threats, just played by different actors with similar physicality and “career personality” (Khaleesi is clearly a Sarah Connor proxy).

No-one wants to see a watered down version of the James Cameron Terminator movies. Try something entirely different, just within the same Terminator universe.
