Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back in a very big way this summer. Paramount Pictures announced today that the sequel/reboot/sequeboot Terminator: Genisys will be released in IMAX 3D this summer in addition to traditional theaters, ensuring that the film will be available to fans on the large-format screens. This isn’t a huge surprise given that most studio blockbusters get IMAX upgrades nowadays, but I will be curious to see how long the engagement lasts—Marvel’s Ant-Man opens just two weeks later, and I imagine the folks at Disney/Marvel Studios will want to get their tiny new superhero into IMAX theaters as well.

Like many, I remain mostly disinterested in Terminator: Genisys (I’m much more looking forward to Magic Mike XXL, opening the same weekend). There’s nothing about the film that looks too terrible, it just feels unnecessary. We’ve seen from the trailers that the movie will be retreading territory from The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day before unveiling its own, changed world of 1984, inhabited by an already strong and Cyberdyne-savvy Sarah Connor (played by Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke).

Maybe Paramount and director Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) will surprise us with something fun and inventive, but thus far I haven’t really gotten that vibe from any of the marketing. Rewatch the film’s first trailer below, and prepare yourself for the IMAX 3D release on July 1st if you’re so inclined.
