As we head into the beginning of January, we prepare for a rather drastic shift in new releases from awards contenders to genre fare.  The critically reviled The Devil Inside kicked off 2012, and first out of the gate in 2013 is another horror film, Texas Chainsaw 3D.  A few new images from the film have landed online, giving us a couple of new looks at ol’ Leatherface.  The pic is a direct sequel to the 1974 original and picks up where that film left off: a young woman has escaped the horrors of the Sawyer family and alerted authorities.  The townspeople descend on the Sawyer household and burn it to the ground, seemingly putting an end to the family’s reign of terror.  The story then jumps forward to present day where a young woman has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she didn’t know she had, and naturally things take a dark turn when she goes snooping around.

Hit the jump to take a look at the new images.  The film stars Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde, Scott EastwoodBill MoseleyDan YeagerGunnar Hansen, and Paul Rae.  Texas Chainsaw 3D opens on January 4, 2013.

Here’s the official synopsis for Texas Chainsaw 3D:

Lionsgate’s TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace.  The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible.  Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends.  Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had.  After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars.

After what happened in Newtown Connecticut – movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre have become more particularly revolting and dreadfully wrong to me. I’m not blaming them for real violence or blaming anyone for watching them. I have liked these kinds of movies in the past, but I don’t think they are a good idea anymore. At a minimum it just seems sad right now that people – including me – would want to see these sadistic images of murder and bloodshed of innocent people.
Maybe COLLIDER could take a break for a while from this genre until we figure out why we – including me – like to watch innocent people captured, terrified, tortured, and get hacked to death – and if that’s a good thing for our souls.
I mean no one disrespect and I love this website, the writing, and almost all the movies profiled.

We like to see all of that in films because it isn’t real.

It’s not about horror movies, or violent videogames.. It’s all about education. A well educated person can understand the difference between fiction and real life. A well educated person knows that hurting other people is not right. A well educated person knows what a movie or a videogame is. Period.

I agree with Eduardo Victoria and CRU3L fans of the horror genre don’t’ watch this films because they depict real life they are a fantasy, no different than watching the exaggerated exploitation of single women in Manhattan. My co-worker at DISH and I are fans of the original ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and was curious to see the new 3D version. Unfortunately, the holidays have put a hefty hole in my pocket so I think I will wait until this is released on DVD. I have a Blockbuster @home account through DISH, once this is released I will add it to the top of my movie queue and pick it up from the store instead of waiting for it in the mail; this way is more convenient for me and I can mail it back when I’m done. I think this movie will work for when I want a scary movie night with friends.
