Thanos Confirmed to Appear in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and THE AVENGERS 2?

     September 19, 2012

Joss Whedon’s The Avengers capped off a great run for Phase One of Marvel Studios’ film slate, and now Phase Two of the studio’s comic book film line-up is taking shape.  Filming on Iron Man 3 is winding down, production on Thor: The Dark World has commenced, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set to get underway next March.  That leaves Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2 as the final two films of the Phase Two lineup, with Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man a slight possibility should he be able to get production started next year.

Ever since audiences were caught a glimpse of that big purple alien guy in the tag for The Avengers, fans have been pondering a major arc for the villain Thanos in further films.  As with everything Marvel we have no firm confirmation of how the character wlll come into play in Phase Two, but it’s been assumed that he’ll make his appearance in one of the later films of the slate.  Now solid confirmation is being claimed that the baddie will pop up in Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2.  Hit the jump for more.

thanos-comic-book-imageFor those that are a little confused, let me back up a bit.  Thanos was the big guy seen at the very end of The Avengers smirking at the Chitauri leader’s warning that to face off against the humans would be “to court Death itself.”  In the comics, Thanos is a massive threat to The Avengers and pretty much any and all superheroes.  He’s also obsessed with Death, a literal being, and seeks out the powerful Cosmic Cube (called the “Tesseract” in the films) and wields the Infinity Gauntlet, which basically grants Thanos an insane amount of power.

Marvel is venturing into space opera territory with Guardians of the Galaxy, and James Gunn recently confirmed that he’ll be writing and directing the ambitious feature.  Many assumed that Thanos would have some presence in Guardians to set him up as the main villain in The Avengers 2; we’ll see the superheroes face off against a number of antagonists in their own separate films, so something really, really bad needs to appear in order to necessitate the reassembling of The Avengers.

The folks over at Cosmic Book News have a source that claims to have confirmed with Thanos creator Jim Starlin at the Montreal Comic-Con that the character will indeed appear in both Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2.  As a number of rumors have come and gone over the years, Marvel has taken a firm “no comment” stance on all such rumblings until they announce things formally, so this isn’t an official confirmation.  That said, it’s not exactly a stretch to imagine the character popping up in both films.

We likely won’t hear solid confirmation regarding the villain/plot of Guardians or The Avengers 2 for some time, but Thanos didn’t appear at the end of The Avengers for nothing.  Whedon’s tease will pay off in one way or another sometime down the road, and the final two films in Marvel’s Phase Two would be a solid arc for the character.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on August 1st, 2014, while Joss Whedon’s The Avengers 2 will open on May 1st, 2015.

I dunno, I still think that Thanos needs more build-up than just a teaser after Avengers and a main role in Guardians. Let Thanos be the third act finale. Let Ultron be Phase 2′s closer (it would just mean they HAVE to get Ant Man done).

Nah. I think Thanos can close out Phase 2. I think Phase 3 needs to be The Civil War.

      • Get Em

You can’t do the civil war phase 3 wouldn’t b long enough to do the civil war justice there are to many characters and side plots that come into play in that arc to justify it being done right

  • James

I think Civil War would be a fantastic way to wrap up Phase 3.

Enough with the (possible) spoilers in the headlines. Some people don’t want to know anything about these movies in advance. You should put the spoiling information inside the article, not in the headline.

Phase 2 will end with The Avengers defeating Thanos and the world security council deciding that the avengers initiative works but need to be better control etc by the government which leads to the creation of the superhuman registration act and the civil war arc for phase 3… Feige has already said in interviews that Civil War makes sense for phase 3…..

Ehhh Civil war is a stretch for a third movie cause at this point there would just be a hand full of heroes. and the Feige rumor that you have put in here is not entirely true if it is please post your source. Fiege doesn’t give away plot rumors like that he’s pretty consistently all over the board and tight lipped. Further more having a separation of heroes wouldn’t make sense for two main reasons.. number one i don’t think Civil War would work in phase three cause we just haven’t had enough time with the characters to really warrant something like that story working and for us to buy it. I mean i guess you continue down the kind of bad path that was set up for Iron Man and Cap in the first and instead of best friends becoming enemies i guess you could do the destined hero mashup between two heroes that never saw eye to eye but the pay off at the end wouldnt feel the same. PLUS there will be too little heroes to make a story that big WORK. I mean you would have Iron Man, Hulk, Cap, Thor, THe Guardians, THe SHIELD agents, Falcon, War Machine and possibly ANT-MAN. Thats a weak cast for a story like that. the split would feel forced and one sided. sorry Civil war would fail. I think what htey need to do is introduce more heroes between Phase 2 and 3. Bring in Ant Man before 2 and introduce his Ultron Army much like they seem to be doing with an army of Iron Man Suits. You have The avengers down for th elast count against Thanos and you have Hank release his army upon Thanos and have all the ultrons die off accept one and the tag at the end should be the color of the Ultron light swap from Blue to Red as it gains it’s sentience and declares war upon the Avengers for killing and using his comrades. Phase 3 should enter NEW heroes as Ultron gains momentum and even creates VISION for both of them to be Villains in Avengers 3 to have a juxtaposition shot for tag of Hank turning Vision good and becoming an Avenger at the end of three. At that point i would say i should have enough heroes to start the warrant of a Civil War type Arc but it would need to really be present in all separate stories and not just The main AVEGNERS but you build it up in teh singles and have it come to a head in Avengers 4 or 5. if they last that long.

What if in the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thanos decimates the guardians, and sets the stage for the final conflict in the Avengers 2? It would raise the stakes tenthfold if that happened

    • IcemanHill

I agree…Thanos should just destroy the GOTG in an epic final battle. The the Avengers would be like “Holy Crap, this dude is no joke…”

I also, agree that Phase 3 should be Civil War. It allows for a more grounded storyline (compared to Phase 2′s cosmic one) and allows us to get into a deep dive of the characters. not them just bashing aliens.

<- This, would be perfect plotwise.

I think that in guardians of the galaxy should end with thanos attacking earth and the guardians try to stop him but he gets away and then he reappears in avengers 2 so the avengers fight him.
